  1. I have to say that I like the fact they call things how they see them and not as homers. I watched the Cubs game for half an inning and those guys are complete homers. Lee struck out looking and threw his bat down. The anouncers said he had a beef even after the replay showed the pitch was at the knees. They were outraged that he was called out. We know who Bill and Brian want to win, but at least they are pretty fair.
  2. If so, 65% is actually surprisingly low. But, in any case, the question is what were Cordero's chances vs. Matt Wise's with that winning run on 3rd. Since odds were the game was going to be lost, it was most likely the last inning and it no longer made any sense at all to save Cordero at that point...even if it did at the start of the inning. Yes it was in response to that. The big disagreement is how much of a difference it is going from Wise to CoCo. Some say huge, some say not much. Some people think any advantage should be used. Some don't.
  3. How many of those times were extra inning games? Was he the last reliever left before going to a starting pitcher who had an off day? I agree with you that most managers would have done the same thing so it isn't like Yost is any different than an manager.
  4. When Hall didn't get that bunt down was the point at which I was the most upset today. Throwing things angry, almost. I didn't completley agree with him bunting, but he was a windmill his first few at bats so I somewhat, kind of, understand that. CoCo has not been solid all year. He has blown more than his share of leads, including at least 2 multi run leads with one out to go. Still, he is our best reliever and that kind of points out just how pathetic our bulpen really is.
  5. I am sort of split on this one. I realy like the idea, but am not sure if it would become a distraction. Might be interesting to see something like Gameday at the park with bench player splits on stats. I am kind of a tradationalist at the park though. I like to go with my scorebook.
  6. I know this is old, but I just got around to bringing it up. I don't remember seeing it before. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=2929676 I know I would use this if they had it at Miller Park. I like the replays part.
  7. Saves became a sexy stat. Saves became a stat that players can make money off of, much like RBIs. 2 more articles. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/whither-the-closer/ http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/whither-the-closer-part-two/
  8. I have come to bleieve "geek" is a relative term. Also, what is considered to be geeky now will be cool soon.
  9. Count me amongst the losers. Of course my brother won and he said I could go with him so maybe I am a winner.
  10. I like him having a golf or other sport background. Better analogies.
  11. The ideal situation for our bulpen this year, or any year, would have been for one of our younger RP to develop. This year that would have been Capellan or Sarfate. Next year I would have to think the best would be for Turnbow to be named closer. That way we can put Shouse and a stud righty in the pen and use them in the highest leverage situations.
  12. I have seen talk about signing somebody in the offseason to fill holes on our team, most notably in LF. The only position I see getting taken care of in the offseason is RP. I doubt we will even see that. People talk about having quite a bit of money this offseason and say we should get afree agent. I disagree. I doubt we will be able to find much more than a bench player who is willing to take less than a 3-4 year contract. Yes, we have money this offseason, but looking forward we will be strapped the year after. Not to mention that free agents generally are a bad idea. We should at the very least trade some of our SP depth to fill our needs.
  13. I really think that Ned is back next year if they get at least 83 wins this year. That would give them a 16-12 record for the month of September. That doesn't seem like much, but that is a pretty good record for any month. They will have finished strong after almost completley falling apart in July and August.
  14. They are playing the percentages when they shift. Playing to stop 20 hits vs 4 hits. It looks horrible when it doesn't work, but when it does work will go largley unnoticed.
  15. Right now I am looking at our schedule thinking, "this is gonna suck."
  16. I just meant in that short 3 game stretch. I agree we are going through a meat grinder from here on out. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif
  17. I wouldn't go giving Pinella to much credit there. Marmol is young and unproven. It is easy to pass over a young guy even though he is better. I would attribute that more to luck than anything. If they can find a manager who will manage without regard to the save stat I am on board.
  18. That is sort of my take on the whole thing. I doubt there will be as many upset people since the manager will be different though. A new manager would get at least a one year grace period.
  19. That is the problem though. I beleive that most if not all managers would have done the same thing.
  20. Is Ned Yost a bad manager or is bulpen usage a problem league wide? That is the whole problem I have with criticizing Yost for not using Cordero. To me it is like seeing Corey Hart go 0-4 in a game and saying he sucks. I know he doesn't because we can look at his stats and compare them to other players. We have almost no basis for comparison like this in the case of managers. I think it would be a safe bet that Yost's use of Cordero, or lack of, would be consistent with most managers throughout the league. Does that make it right, no. Does that make Ned a bad manager, maybe. If that is the case, most managers in the league are bad as well.
  21. Lefty, righty matchups would be my guess.
  22. Like I have said before, I will not argue that the misuse of CoCo, I am just disputing that another manager wouldn't make the same choice with his closer. Both interesting articles by the way.
  23. I would have to say that there is a bias, or at the very least it shows that managers are inconsistent in wins added. Looking further down, year to year, you see that Cox and LaRussa are at the top one year and the bottom the next year. I also think the first group should have been sorted by WA162 not WA. It rewards managers who manage a long time, not how good they are year to year. It looks like a somewhat flawed model. Of course maybe managers are inconsistent year to year or maybe their strategies at the very least are.
