  1. I concur with TLB. That is the way I am trying to look at the season. I am not even looking at the standings anymore.
  2. At least the Mets blew a bigger lead so our 8.5 game lead will be overlooked.
  3. I think it is cool, but a step back. The first year was free tickets to the game on his birthday. Last year was a voucher for a free game that would have been almost empty. Now a $10 voucher for concessions. Still pretty cool, but I think at this rate next year will be a $5 coupon for a an April middle of the week game.
  4. That third run, like I said was scored in a garbage time situation where if the score was closer, I doubt we get it.
  5. We did for the first half of the season. A guy named Villanueva. Not quite as good, but filled in quite nicely. I don't think it is a coincidence our bulpen was tough in the first half and bad in the 2nd.
  6. I am sorry, but that is quite a stretch. People complain that Yost doesn't try to gain the handed advantage then when he does it was just so he could pull the guy to bring in somebody to hit a guy. All this complaining about pitching choices as the cause of the loss last night is overlooking one major thing. They only scored 3 runs. One of those was in a garbage time situation in the bottom of the 9th.
  7. Next year when Braun fires a ball into the dugout in LaRussa's direction it will only be an error and shouldn't get him ejected.
  8. How much can you really learn about managing with crappy players? What I mean is, how much managing can you do when your backup outfielder is Chris Magruder. When your backups are several tiers below your starters in terms of talent, the choice is obvious who whould be playing. There should be almost no substitutions when the level of talent is that clear cut. This is the first year Ned actually had enough talent that he had to make tough choices. If you look at our bulpen we have Shouse, Cordero and a bunch of other guys. Outside of those 2 guys nobody has been really reliable. We had Villanueva at the start of the year and were doing good, but he got burned out. With Villanueva and Shouse we had our twin stoppers for mid game rallies. When our bulpen went down to 2 guys we started to give up lots of late leads. Lets face it, when the starter goes bad, we are sort of strugling to get to CoCo. We really needed one of the younger guys to step up and none did.
  9. Yeah no kidding those guys are... Hey wait a minute.
  10. That is why you save Counsell. So he can hit with the bases loaded.
  11. If it is a pink bat I will go with Hall. Other than that I have to go with Hart.
  12. TLB I think replacing Jenkins/Mench with Gross/Dillon will help a little. Like you said though, it is a team wide problem. I am not sure if some of it might be attributable to youth.
  13. I didn't think of that, but I am suspicious when he talks about something that happened recently when it happened around a month ago(I think any way. Yost made his nuclear winter comment a while back I believe.) For all we know the "grumblings" could be when Hall said he wanted to play more. The only ones I see getting shorted on playing time right now are Jenkins, Hall and Braun. Braun getting pulled is debatable depending on if you think pulling he or Weeks is a better idea, but as for Hall and Jenkins, they haven't exactly played well all year so I would say to them, play better.
  14. Circumstances are different at home than on the road. You always have at least one more at bat at home when you make RP decisions.
  15. You really think a successful businessman really likes to finish 2nd in anything?
  16. I'm sorry, but I really find this to be absurd. You can't chart out all of the possible scenarios that can happen in a game, and there are other (season-long) effects to cosider, like how often to use a guy, etc. The whole point is, if your manager would need one of these charts, he sucks. He doesn't have the instincts or intelligence to be managing a major league baseball team. There are probably a lot of people who can routinely make these types of decisions without a chart. Good managers just know. Obviously there would be more conditions like a pitch count within a week and asking how the reliever was feeling day to day. I am sorry, but I find it surprising that you talk about SABRmetrics in one sentence then turn around and poo poo a leverage index. http://www.insidethebook.com/li.shtml
  17. How often do other managers use that strategy though. I am not saying it is right, just if we are going to change to another manager I would hate to have the same problems. I honestly think the best thing as far as using an ace reliver is concerned would be to give the manager a leverage chart and tell him that if it reaches a certain level, insert your best reliever. That is very difficult to do though with what relievers earn with high save totals. The best thing that could have happened to us this year would have been for Capellan to come in and be a stud reliever like Marmol has for Chicago. He is young so we could pass him over as closer and give him the high leverage innings. The big problem is we don't have that shut down guy outside of Cordero and Shouse. Shouse is really only effective against lefties and most teams will not use their closer outside of certain situations. I see this as a MLB manager problem, not exclusive to Yost. That is why I am not convinced replacing Yost would necessarily make us better.
  18. I want a better comaprison to other managers before making a decision. Edit: To be perfectly honest you would have to convince me that a manager has more than a negligible effect on the outcome of games, especially with reagards to in game decisions. You would also have to convince me that Yost has a strategy that is way out of wack with what a typical manager does. You would also have to convince me that his strategy is worse and not just different. For example, playing for one run in certain situations as opposed to always playing for the big inning.
  19. Would this be something that is like the "Matt Wise to the Reds for Adam Dunn" rumor?
  20. I wouldn't worry about an extension for Yost unless Melvin gets one. I don't see a manager getting a longer contract than the GM. Wouldn't make sense. If Mark A. brings in a new GM then he would more than likley have to eat the rest of Yost's contract to get the guy the new GM wants. I just don't see Mark A. making that kind of business decision.
  21. That sentence is self contradictory. Cubs fan and baseball savy should never be used together. I kid, I have a friend who is a Cubs fan also.http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif
  22. I have a question in regards to Yo's inning limit next season. Why would we worry about it? I am not saying that we shouldn't watch his innings, but what are the chances it actually comes into play? If we are talking about a limit of around 210 innings next year I doubt it comes into play unless we make the post season. I don't think they would count the post season in his innings limit so what are the odds he actually pitches 210 or more innings next year. I just ask because it seems to be something that keeps getting brought up in any starting rotation discussion.
  23. Yeah I think Yost is back next year. Melvin and Mark A. seem to like stability within the organization.
  24. Well I have an extra 3 hours every day this next week to play Halo 3 now.
  25. Capuano had at least 4 games in the 16 game stretch where he pitched at least 7 innigs and gave up 2 or fewer runs and they still lost. Vargas has been really lucky this year and Cappy very unlucky. I am still angry about this game. The only thing that kept me from throwing things across the room was my kids. I didn't want to set a bad example and it would have scared my 2 year old. This whole series the umps called everything close against us. Even the plays that were not close went against us. This loss in this postions is the biggest load of crap I have ever seen. I hope the umpires are held accountable. Of course, Ibelieve, most of that stuff is done behind closed doors so even if there are ramifications we will never hear about it.
