  1. Who said anything about expecting Hart type numbers? I said small step back. We take a small step back at a position of strength, trade Hart for somebody who will help us in the coming years and save a lot of money. I don't really see how we could justify giving Hart a 3 year contract even at his current salary compared to the alternative.
  2. Most of his value is going to be in the position he plays while playing at least average defense. Anything from the bat will be a plus especially after the crap we have had there the last couple years(outside of Gonzalez). It is up to our manager to remember he is not a top of the order hitter. SS isn't exactly a strong position around the league.
  3. I wouldn't. We can't tie up that much money in a player who is as replaceable as Hart is. Sure it would be a small step down but we need to allocate out money elsewhere instead of a position of strength withing our franchise.
  4. Not all fluff but it is a lot of fluff and 35 games. All you need is one good hot streak and you can have amazing stats. His batting title there means about as much as his batting stats with the Brewers last year. Not much.
  5. True. Increased local revenue will drive down how much they bring back in revenue sharing. On the other hand if other teams increase their revenue by more than the Brewers do we will get more back.
  6. The added TV revenue will only be about $13m extra per year per team. Per ESPN If you didn't feel like doing the math. $800m/30=$26.7m $26.7m/2=$13.35m Assuming a $90m payroll as the base that puts us at about $103m and assuming our local TV deal went to $20m then we are at about $115mish. The Dodgers TV contract may not have as big of an impact because of how it was structured and their team debt. It will only count as about $84m instead of the full amount. Add in the fact that many teams got bigger increases and our increase in payroll will not buy as much as it did even a year ago.
  7. Gamel's salary could shoot up pretty quickly in the next few years. He should be eligible for arbitration after 2013.
  8. If you added the modifier "that had a good talent base" I would agree. The Cubs are spending plenty of money but are so bad it will not help them for a couple seasons.
  9. Hart and Gomez are blocking guys who at worst shouldn't be a big step down from them offensively with a possibility of being better. Not a big possibility though.
  10. Only if we make a qualifying offer. It was $13m this year and not likely to go down next year. The new draft pick compensation setup is really crap.
  11. and 2B and corner OF. Really almost every single position. We have Schafer in CF and the rest are all pretty far off except maybe 1B.
  12. Yeah pretty much. We have a pretty good idea what to expect out of Estrada and Gallardo but behind them we have about 6 or more guys who we need to let start and see what we have. The upside of those guys is a possible Division Champion. The downside is probably about a .500 team. I think we have to take into consideration what the guys we would trade could bring back. Hart, Ramirez, Gomez and Weeks would be the guys that would probably be the ones to trade. Would those guys bring back anything useful in trade. Would those guys bring back anything significant enough to make it worth trading them compared to just letting them play and hoping the young pitchers pitch well? Braun isn't getting any younger.
  13. Right and as a closer he is pretty likely to come in with the bases empty. So a walk here and there isn't going to be as bad as him coming in mid inning.
  14. We really shouldn't be either going for a rebuild or going for the playoffs at this point. We need to see where our young pitchers are. There is just a ton of uncertainty how good we are right now.
  15. He has looked good. His results have been poor.
  16. That is for purely defensive reasons.
  17. I can see Gamel taking more than a few starts away from Aoki in RF.
  18. I think Gamel probably has more value to us than he would bring back in trade.
  19. There are 2 or at most 3 teams in baseball who project at 90 wins right now. The Brewers need to add about 4-5 wins to be serious playoff contenders when you add the 2 wild cards. These wins could be added just by young guys producing over expectations but that obviously is the riskier path. I will add this to the discussion. If we had signed Hamilton we would have not come anywhere near adding 5 wins. He is at best a 2-3 win upgrade over our worst OF, he is a downgrade to Braun and at CF over the next 3 years he is a downgrade to Gomez to be honest. How about Schafer since he will probably be the one in CF after this year? I personally would prefer Gomez this year and Schafer over the next 2 plus money spent elsewhere to Hamilton. I like the offseason so far. The contracts are ridiculous. I would like to see a veteran starting pitcher added to give us a bit more depth but the money has been crazy so far.
  20. I think your problem there is the manager, not the players. Sure it is but most managers will do this. I sucks but you really have to build a pen to cover up bad managing decisions.
  21. I prefer a bullpen with guys that the manager is willing to switch around if they are not performing to a bullpen with established players. With established players the manager can always hide behind letting experienced guys play to their previous performance like we saw last year with K-Rod.
  22. They will just move somebody to 1B. They really don't have a good 1B anyway.
  23. So pretty much like most starters.
  24. I believe the inconsistent work relievers get is harder on arms than starting.
  25. I don't think the innings are as much of an issue for guys coming back from an injury or older guys as much as younger guys who have never pitched many innings. In other words I don't worry about the innings as much for Rogers and Estrada as much as I would for Peralta, Fiers and other young guys. As was pointed out Peralta and Fiers pitched enough innings that they can easily go 200 innings. Even getting a full season's worth of starts how many guys will actually pitch 200+ innings? Not many do anymore with pitch counts and all the specialized relievers and missing just one or two starts knocks the innings down into the 190ish range. Nobody is forgetting Narveson. He wasn't all that great as a starter for us before injury and we don't know if he will be 100% ready to go at the start of the season.
