  1. It totally depends on the stretch of road. What I refered to as Free Flow Speed is basically the speed drivers would travel at if only the roadway itself was governing how fast they travel. In otherwords, environmental conditions and traffic don't limit speed and there is no speed limit. For the trip from MKE to CHI that speed may even be something like 90. MKE to Madison 85? The 85th percentile of those roadways is probably right around 75. This might explain it better (taken directly from wikipedia): "The speed limit is commonly set at or below the '85th percentile speed' (which is the speed at which 85% of the traffic is travelling)[25][/sup] and in the USA is typically set 8 to 12 mph (13 to 19 km/h) below that speed.[26][/sup] A 1997 study carried out in Michigan, USA showed that drivers "drive at speeds that they feel are appropriate, apparently independent of the posted speed" For the most part, other countries set their limits with safety in mind. The US does not. What ends up happening is that when a pack of cars is traveling faster than the speedlimit, which tends to happen often because people want to naturally travel at the 85th percentile regardless of the limit, you are much safer speeding up to that 85th percentile than following the law and putting yourself at risk for a collision. Most fatal accidents are caused by variences in speed, not by everyone traveling at a faster rate. Ironically, the people that are hung up on traveling at what the law says are the ones who are putting us all in more danger.
  2. My sense of entitlement comes from the fact that I design hwys for a living and know that the posted speed limits in WI and IL are not set in the public's best interest. They are typically designed for drivers to travel 10-20 mph over the posted limit. Countless studies have shown that our roadways are safer when set at the 85th percentile of free flow speed (probably right around 75 mph for most of WI). Studies have also shown that tickets dramatically decrease in this senario. You can stick with your stance that we have to follow things the way they are no matter how asinine. I prefer to hope that things are made as safe as possible, but thats just me.
  3. Its my understanding that the brother's trip cost the family over $150k. It stands to reason they are $300k in the hole now, and the reality show was scraped a long time ago. I have no problem with them trying to recoup some of that or all of it through interviews or books.
  4. FYI, the TV show was canceled long ago.
  5. Seriously. What a lame comment. Most hwy speed limits serve only to make money and not provide for optimum safety, especially in the state of WI.
  6. If that comment came from most players I would agree with you, but in Hart's case not so much. I think a lot of the fans, myself included, felt like he had been playing lazy, especially on defense. Rededicating himself was something he should have been doing all along if he didn't like the criticism he was receiving. In this case it seems to have worked out for the better, though his HR/FB rate is probably going to regress back to normal soon. Maybe preparing himself mentally and physically added .100 OPS and luck added the other .100. I don't think it’s as far fetched as you are making it out to be.
  7. You know you can ask to see the radar gun reading, right? They have to indicate how they calculated your speed, and 90% of the time it is with a radar or laser. If they do it with some type of counting/distance method you can almost always fight that, especially if there is traffic around you. So the point is that if the ticket said you were going more than 20 over, you were. You can ask, but the officer has absolutely no requirement to show you the radar or laser. Most officers do not show you the reading due to officer safety factors. I wouldn't want a citizen sticking their head in my squad car where a rifle or shotgun is kept. Many, many, many times the officer does not even lock in the radar reading. It is not required. Many older radar units stop tracking the speed once the speed is locked in. Why lock in a speed at 70 if you can tell that the vehicle is still accelerating? The officer is required to estimate the suspect vehicle's speed, activate the laser/radar, and then track the speed for 3 seconds. There is no requirement to lock in the speed. Back to what nodakfan17 was saying. I agree that the original poster should take responsibility and pay up. It sounds like he is taking full responsibility for his mistake. However, if you know how to play the game, more power to you. In my opinion, it's like trying to get the best price on a used car. Not saying you are wrong, but that goes directly against what I was told by the officer who gave me my first speeding ticket about 8 years ago. Perhaps it has changed or different areas have different rules.
  8. I don't fight tickets anymore even though I am a traffic engineer and could often be my own expert witness. I figure the amount of time I need to take off work to fight the fine is just time lost at my job where I would make up the money anyway and lose vacation. When I was unemployed though I got out of 2 tickets pretty easy though with some simple math and thanks to the ineptness of most cops. (edit: enlarged the font --1992)
  9. That shot off the crossbar in the 85th-ish minute was an inch from being the best shot of the tourney so far.
  10. Its not that dangerous to sail around the world with today's technology. Its an emotional and physical marathon however, especially at that age. Good for her for trying and being responsibly equiped to seek help if needed. It would have been a great acomplishment she could have been proud of the rest of her life. I would guess she will attempt it again at some point.
  11. And that was if they maxed out Miller Park again, which they will not. They could potentially lose quite a bit this season. It seems as though they are where they have been for the last couple of years. With attendance above 2.7 mil, they can suport an MLB payroll of around $87 by the end of the season. Mark has said in the past that in 2 years when the new TV deal kicks in and if they continue to max out revenue from Miller Park to above 90% (not a given considering how volitle attendance can be) they could top a $100 million payroll. I don't see that happening for a while though.
  12. I was thinking the same thing as I was watching the Nats game today. A 3-4-5 of Harper, Zimmerman, and Prince would be pretty nasty. What would the Nats have to give up to get Prince? I don't know much about their system. Harper won't be up next season as an 18 year old. If the reasoning for the Nats is to get that 3-4-5, they might as well try to sign Prince when he is a FA. No sense in them giving up prospects for Prince's 2011 services.
  13. Actually, quite a few posters on this thread are posting as if they know something the rest of us don't as if to indicate that they aren't speculating.
  14. Huh, Soup was worth 1.5 WAR over his contract. How did you manage to get -0.8?
  15. Really until the 6th nobody even seemed to square up on a ball besides that HR on a nearly perfect pitch. Most of the base hits up to that point were bloopers over the infielders on uncomfortable swings. Anyone watching the game not named Witrado could tell he was laboring and lost his control as is to be expected. I can see saying Manny hasn't put togeather many back to back good starts, but I can't see how you can take anything away from his performance last night.
  16. Evidence? Or just more conjecture? The evidence you will never find but Mark A definitely had a strong hand in signing Suppan. Per the reason of the Suppan deal was a hey look at me I am the new owner and I am signing an expensive free agent signing. You know the signing that says I am going to be spending money on the team even though this is foolish spending for a pitcher who is a career #5 pitcher. So no evidence. Wow, you are making some pretty bold statements considering you are just guessing like the rest of us.
  17. The whole sell high thing with regards to McGehee doesn't work for me. Every GM knows the Brewers would be selling high on McGehee. That will be reflected in the return offered.
  18. Jeez, who is this dolt? He says he knows nothing about soccer because he doesn't care, then proceeds to talk about soccer as if he is a real reporter. Why would you start out an article saying you know nothing about what follows. Its not that I even care that he doesn't like soccer, its just that he is so close minded about other countries cultures. This is why Americans get a bad rap from the rest of the world.
  19. You can add Fielder to that list. I don't see Mark A trading Fielder this year there maybe a possibility that Mark A allows Melvin to trade Fielder this off season if a deal can not be made between the Brewers and Fielder at that time. Fielder is just way to much of a cash cow for Mark A right now to just let go of even if it does make the team better in the long run. Basically what I am saying is you are setting yourself up for a big let down if you think Fielder is going to be traded by this deadline for a bunch of prospects. This is just as much speculation as me saying I think he will be traded. Mark hasn't been in this position before, so how do either of us know what he is going to do? I think you are setting yourself up for just as big a let down if you think Fielder is going to be on this team by the end of the year.
  20. And, it is an opinion when I say wins are the most important thing in baseball. That's what an opinion is. Fair enough, but then you have to understand that an opinion based on erroneous facts can still be wrong. If its your opinion that water isn't wet, you are still wrong even though its just an opinion. Plus, since this is about the best careers going forward, like you said, Where are you getting that from? Its about who will have the best career when it is all over. The whole body of work. So far AGon and Howard are about even on offense, with AGon being the superior defender and much younger. Based on all of that information, it is very likely that when both retire AGon will have had the better career. It is also likely that Pujols, Prince, Tex, Cabrera, Youk, and Votto will have had better careers as well. And I do think that when you're evaluating players from different teams, the ball park that they play in shouldn't be a detriment to the player, rather it should be a positive to the player. Especially since, like you said, we're predicting future numbers. I strongly disagree with this, which is why I used OPS+ to show you factual information about how AGon has been just as good as Howard offensively if they were playing in the same conditions. Furthermore, going forward there is a very low chance AGon will continue to play half his games in Petco. Its crazy to think how good his raw numbers might be in a hitters park. We will probably find out in a season or two.
  21. I was thinking about this too. It is pretty weak that the big reveal at the end was something that only pertained to this last season. The island and mythology has more questions than answers still, and that has been around for the entire run. The big finish was really just about something they added in right at the end.
  22. I'm not shocked. Baseball is a stat driven game, and if you look at Howard's stats, he's impressive. I personally would rather have Gonzalez on my team, but that's mainly just because of his contract compared to Howard. If you take contract out of the picture, Howard has him beat in almost every statistical category, other than strikeouts. You can say defense offsets offense, but then again, Howard's defense hasn't seemed to hurt the Phillies all that much the last few seasons. (Two world series, one win). Howard and AGon have had essentially the same offense if you factor in that one plays in perhaps the best hitters park and the other the best pitchers park for half their games. As proof, since becoming regular players, AGon's OPS+ is 140 while Howard's is 141. Then, as you said, add in defense and age to help you project their future numbers and its not even close. I can't agree with people who look at stats like RBIs or WS wins (or say Howard's defense hasn't hurt his team because they won a WS) since the poll was best first basemen, not best team that the first basemen in question played on.
  23. Really? I got the $20, but I never got a golden guns code. Was it pre-order only? They emailed me the code but one that didn't work was also included in the packaging from Amazon. Ironically, I still haven't gotten my $20.
