  1. This is correcting a horrible mistake made at the beginning of the year. The bench decisions were awful. One down, a few more to go to this thing right.
  2. Bullpen management is probably the main area that a manager has control over. If he can't do that, then quite simply, he isn't a very good manager. That said, this bullpen is not great. The difference between .500 teams and 90+ win teams is often the bullpen. This is where it helps to be a big market team. You can pay $10 million dollars to someone who only plays 60 innings a year. The Brewers are an above average team that can only afford an average bullpen at best. This is an average bullpen. No innings come easy. Once the game is turned over the pen, we can rest assured that an additional 1-2 runs are going to cross the plate for the opposition. RR could be better at minimizing that, but the fact is, the talent among the reliever corps is OK, but not championship quality. The Brewers have to have a 3 run lead in the 7th in order to be comfortable about a victory. As we saw last night, and in previous games, at times that's not even a guarantee.
  3. This is of course, coming the same fans who cheered frothingly for Barry Bonds for 15 years, while ignoring the steroids allegations and criminal charges. Playing the game right way, indeed.
  4. I really like this idea (a variation of it has been posted here before). I'm a big fan of playing every team in the other league at least once, simply because I think it enhances the marketability of the sport. I had the same idea about a year ago, only playing divisional opponents 15 times. But 14 keeps the regular season about the same length. That's better, especially if you are adding a level of playoffs.
  5. Nieves and Counsell/Wilson are really the problems. Nieves is a terrible defensive catcher. I've seen nothing to show otherwise. So it would be much better to have Kottaras or Rivera in that role. Counsell and Wilson are redundant. Counsell is terrible on offense this year and can't play everyday, but he is a beloved member of the community, so he will never be released. However, that is probably what should be done. The fact they picked up Wilson at all is indicative of the sentiment that Counsell is not an option for anything more than a random start. He's wasting a roster spot as Player Emeritus. When Morgan was injured and Kotsay playing (nearly) everyday it was infuriating. Boggs should have been in Kotsay's role at that time. Now that Morgan is back, and Kotsay basically in the role he was acquired for, it probably makes more sense for Boggs to be in AAA. I think Gomez is a plus bench player, just not a good everyday player.
  6. Who do they send down if they bring up Gamel? There are only 12 pitchers so they will all stay. Wilson will have to pass through waivers, right? Can't send Kotsay down. Won't fall back to just one catcher. That leaves who, Gomez?
  7. I say it's time for Roenicke to wake up and stop having Loe pitch to lefty bats. It's also time for the manager to use a quicker hook with his relievers. Match ups slow the game but can be really effective.
  8. Earl Weaver's Seventh Law: It's easier to find four good starters than five. Probably other of his contemporaries did this too, but Earl used 4 main starters, then would use an occasional spot start from a long man in the bullpen, or a young kid he was breaking into the rotation. For example, the 1978 team used a rotation of Palmer, Flanagan, Dennis Martinez, and Scot MacGregor, each starting between 35-40 games. Then Nelson Briles made 8 starts, and Joe Kerrigan made 2. I find this to be a brilliant strategy. The season is roughly 6 months long. That's 182 days to play 162 games. That means 20 off days built into the schedule. Add in the 10 starts by random mop up guys, like Earl did in 1978, and that leaves your 4 starters to pitch 152 games over 182 days. That leaves 30 off days for the 4 man rotation, or about one day off every 5 days. So a manager who actually plans ahead could go with a 4 man rotation and still have each start only every 5 days. Your best 4 pitchers would get about 38 starts in a year.
  9. But isn't he at least partly, if not completely responsible, for the make up of this awful bench? Certainly he had a lot of say as to who came north for Opening Day. Also, isn't bullpen management the main aspect of the game that managers control. Admittedly you can't make silk out of a sow's ear, but there is talent in this bullpen; it's up to the manager to figure out it's best utilization. RRR may be a better manager than Yost and Macha. I'm reserving judgement for now. One thing for sure, he's starting the season with much better starting pitching than his predecessors ever had. A good rotation has a way of making a manager look smart; even though that aspect of the team has almost nothing to do with him.
  10. I think it's clear the bullpen is not where it needs to be for a playoff caliber team. Have they held a one run lead all year? Axford has only 5 game finishing appearances that were 3 up, 3 down, out of 20 overall. He and Loe are both fine pitchers, but neither are really strong in their "roles". Bolstering the bullpen may be more important than replacing Betancourt.
  11. Great win for the Brewers last night, but it's frustrating to see the 2 pinch hitters called upon are Craig Counsell and Josh Wilson. While Counsell, as a lefty and walk-draw-er has some value on offense, both are presumably on the roster for their defense. Wilson's role should NOT (edit) be as a PH, yet that is the only way he's been used so far. It's difficult to have confidence in Roenicke when he makes these kinds of decisions.
  12. Podsednik and Luis Vizcaino for Carlos Lee was an excellent trade. The dumping of Lee a year and half later didn't work out so well, thanks to Nelson Cruz blossoming into a quality slugger.
  13. I'm just really happy they have defensive replacement Josh Wilson around to pinch hit.
  14. Greinke and Marcum start 2 of 3 in Cincy. Greinke and Yo start 2 in Florida. Isay they win 3 of these 4, and pick up another one along way, 4-3. Hopefully Greinke's luck start to reflect his K:BB ration and K rate.
  15. Aren't pitchers who've had TJ surgery actually less of an injury risk than those who have not? Seldom do pitchers need a second surgery, Capuano being the exception. Other than that surgery he's been quite healthy over his career and very successful. The apparent bump in performance this year is probably due to the league change....he's averaging one more K per 9 than last year, thanks to having pitchers bat, no doubt. I think he's as good a bet as any pitcher to remain healthy and effective for another 4-5 years. I'd like a 3-4 year extension in the offseason.
  16. The brewers really do want to have the worst bench in baseball. With the exception of Counsell there is a better option in AAA than what is sitting on the bench in Milwaukee. The worse you are with the bat as a catcher, the better your defensive reputation.
  17. Earl Weaver knew all this back in the 1970's. If you play for one run, that's all you'll get. Runner at 1B with no outs will score more often than runner at 2B with 1 out.
  18. Awesome. Back to the Glory Days of mid-aughts Seattle infield.
  19. I think most all MLB managers are stupid. Throughout history there have been a handful who were only mildly stupid yet were lucky to have talented rosters so their idiocy wasn't much of a factor. Joe Torre is an example. There are maybe 6 in history that were truly brilliant and their leadership elevated the teams they managed. Earl Weaver is an example. The rest are just stupid. The last couple weeks presented a great opportunity to play Boggs in CF and once or twice at the corners to see if he might be able to contribute to the club this year and in the future. But Roenicke never even considered that option. There is a real chance Boggs could be as good or better find than McGehee. A switch hitting OF'er with quickness and occasional power whose career oba in the majors and minors is over 100 points above his batting average. But instead our manager is focused on playing a has been with no power who can't run or play defense, and who probably will not be on the team next year. Brandon, I hope you declare free agency, go somewhere like Seattle or Toronto and post an .800+ OPS for the year.
  20. I'd play out the season. If they are this close to first place in July, then you can be assured Doug will make a move or two to improve the team. A new ss, a power bat off the bench like Thome, something for the pitching staff. That would push them to 90 wins or better.
  21. OK, so now I screwed up again? Rivera had to be added to the 40 man? Well in that case, I would have brought up Katin.
  22. I'm still a little sceered about 9 games against the Rays, Red Sox, and Yankees.
  23. I think this is a key reason why the athletes themselves are often better at shrugging off a loss than the fans. They deliver post game quotes that sound trite and cliche, but they understand better than the fans that sometimes things just don't go the way they should even if you played the game just the way you wanted. So you "tip your hat" to the other guy, "stay within yourself", and get to ready play again tomorrow.
  24. You're giving me too much credit And That. I didn't realize Katin wasn't on the 40 man until bjkrautk corrected me. Thanks for the explanations everyone. I understand the 3 catcher situation better now.
