  1. I agree with Briggs. Gamel has nothing left to prove in AAA. Keeping him there is wasting his prime seasons. He needs the chance to prove he is a major league player. If he is as good as I think he is, his talent will demand increased playing time as the season wears on. Plus, if he and McGehee end up at the infield corners next year, then I want him to have a season of major league experience, even if it's as a part time player.
  2. Renteria is fading fast. He's been an everyday major league player since he was 19. He's an old 34 that will turn 35 during the season. I don't think you can assume he is a better option than Bentancourt.
  3. A google search turned up this link: http://www.baseballprospe...icle.php?articleid=10011 You have to be a subscriber to read the entire article, but the google summary listed this issue as part of the article.
  4. Brian Roberts is signed for 4 years/$40 million, split evenly per season. Contract started in 2010, and he promptly missed 103 games.
  5. I think you give him a shot, but Doug keeps his eyes open for better options as the summer progresses. It will be a test of Roenicke's skills, to get the most out of a Betancourt/Counsell ss tandem. But if Counsell can play late innings in games where the team is leading, I think Yuni's dmaging effects can be minimized. I'm not going to defend the guy, but where are stats that say he's the worst player in the majors? His WAR last season was 1.3. Nothing to get crazy excited about, but he was above replacement level.
  6. I agree with Gamel making the 25 man roster. It's time for him to establish his major league career. McGehee was 26 when he arrived in Milwaukee; Gamel turns 26 next summer. He's really to old to be considered a prospect. He's at the point where he needs to prove he can have a major league career, whether it's as a starter or bench player. It's too late to work him into a role; he needs to come out Opening Day and produce.
  7. Gamel has played 4 minor league games in RF, 1 in LF, 5 at 1B. I don't think you can assume he will take over for Hart or Braun should they go on the DL. It is a bit worrisome, since the lineup is basically 5 good hitters and 4 pieces of crap (Lucroy, Gomez, Betancourt, Pitcher.) So if you lose one of the 5 for a long period the offense is really going to suffer. Here's some possible scenarios: If Prince gets injured, McGehee plays 1B, Gamel plays 3rd. If Weeks goes down, Counsell or Farris(?) play 2nd. Worse case scenario would be losing Braun or Hart for a month or more. At that point I think they'd go looking for a trade. If Betancourt or Gomez go down for a significant amount of time, it's probably a good thing.
  8. If they have need for another starter the first couple months of the season, they'll make do with what they have, whether it's another shot for Parra, or Loe, or one of the minor league guys. If a starter goes down mid summer for a long period, and if they are in the race, look for Mark A to expand the payroll and for Doug to engineer a trade. Same with ss, if Bentancourt is truly horrible, they'll be bringing some vet through trade by the deadline. Possibly JJ. Unless this thing falls apart early, the Brewers are going for it in Prince's last season.
  9. Good point and one I don't see discussed much around here. We all want to believe Axford will continue to be great. But he averaged 6 walks per 9 innings his last foru seasons in the minors. That's discouraging.
  10. This is frightening. My thoughts and prayers are with this girl and her family. Take care, and good luck.
  11. Jones is already into arbitration years. The Orioles have soured on him a bit. He got off to a slow start last year and it really exposed his hacktastic weaknesses. He's good in CF, but probably not up to his reputation. Of course he's just 25 so could break through and hit 30 homers a year for the next 4 seasons.
  12. Yeah, I'd take a Brady Clark type for the bench any year.
  13. It's not unusual for young players to have crappy OBP their first couple years in the majors, is it? Gotta figure he's over anxious, too eager to make things happen, hold onto his job. Prince's obp was .347 his rookie year. It jumped to .395 the next season.
  14. I see him as a guy who will hit for a nice batting average but won't be able to replicate the obp he carried in the minors because he doesn't have the power numbers to make major pitchers pitch around him. I'm gonna guess around .270/.335/.390/.725.
  15. It's possible Hardy will be available by the All Star break. If he's having a comeback season there's no way he signs long term with the Orioles, so they should be willing to deal him. Only problem, Andy MacPhail is slow as molasses and asks for the moon when all he's shopping is a lava lamp.
  16. Macha took a lot crap on this board for the Gamel zim zam in 2009 and supposedly not playing him. But Gamel had 131 plate appearances in approximately two months from mid May to Mid July. The season's 6 months long, so I see no reason why he couldn't get 300 or more plate appearances in 2010 with the Brewers. I understand a player may get rusty riding the pines all summer, but I don't buy the idea that it somehow ruins them long term. I'd rather have Gamel on the big club all 2010, and Roenicke having the pleasant problem of trying to find him at bats. Another season in AAA is more likely to affect his progress negatively, than getting accustomed to life as a big leaguer.
  17. That's unfair to the first two, at least. They can/could actually play defense. Betancourt reminds me of Deivi Cruz, without that one big season in Detroit when everybody thought he was like, 21, but turned out to be like, 26.
  18. And there are few positions in football that require a special talent. Half or more of the players need only be huge, strong, and somewhat nimble on their feet for their enormous size.
  19. I think if you sign Punto, then you didn't need Counsell. If Punto is getting 400-450 PA, then you're no better off than just playing Yuniesky. None of the other guys are really any better options at this point in their careers. If you want a defense solution at ss, then you have Counsell.
  20. Betancourt is probably as terrible as everyone says; still, I don't want this team carrying 3 shortstops. That would only make the Betancourt dilemma worse.
  21. He kinda hits lefties OK. .283/.319/.436. Can Counsell hold up for 100+ games at ss?
  22. Well, at least Betancourt can hit lefties all right: .283/.319/.436. Can Counsell hold up the big end of a platoon?
  23. Too bad JJ was traded to the Orioles. I'd welcome him back with open arms. Scary trade, but if you don't make the move you don't improve. Hey, I sound like Johnny Cochrane!
  24. Good for him. He did a fine job for the Bostons last year. Here's hoping he's able to continue resurrecting his career, and doesn't ever hurt the Brewers too much.
  25. They made him throw 230 innings in his first full season as a 23 year old (counting the playoffs) and his arm fell off. He'd be a great one to take a flyer if you didn't have to give up too much.
