  1. Good for you! We fans appreciate your committment. And look on the bright side, at least you and the little woman didn't start this streak by having liver and onions.
  2. We have a winner! McGee was traded late in the year, after he had enough plate appearances to qualify for the NL batting title. He only hit .274 for Oakland and they didn't resign him. George Brett won the AL crown hitting .329. So, Eddie won the major league batting title but didn't win any league title. Arguably his finest season.
  3. That was a great interview. Thanks for hard work..
  4. Willie McGee is involved, but he wasn't the player that failed to win the batting title.
  5. Hi numbers will probably fall off a cliff in his mid 30's, like what's happening to David Ortiz. I think he'll make it past 33. And replace Ortiz as DH for the Red Sox in a couple years. However, if last offseason wasn't just a fluke, he may not get the big payoff he might have expected a year ago. As Dunn and Burrell found out, the market for poor defense sluggers ain't what it used to be.
  6. OK, sorry to hijack this topic, but this is my favorite baseball trivia question. What player in which season qualified for the batting title, led the majors in batting average, yet didn't win the batting title in either league? (I think this has only happened once.)
  7. I don't know what happened to the prediction thread, but this is what I thought would happen. Well, Ok, maybe not this good this early! I think last year's young hitters entered the season thinking they were so good they could coast through the year. Prince showed up fat, Hart, Braun, and Hall thought it was little league and they could drive every pitch. Weeks looked lost, Cameron missed the first month, Hardy had a bad back. The league's pitchers seemed ready for them and it took the better part of the year for the offense to adjust. I fully expected Prince and Braun in 2009 to get back some of that lost offense from 2007. I figured another year experience would help the other hitters make adjustments quicker and easier. I was also impressed with Doug's strategy of a 5 man rotation where every pitcher is healthy, durable, and capable of 30 starts/6ip. The quality of the bullpen is directly related to the number of quality starts by the rotation. I think this is their true talent level. They won't continue to win every game of course, but they are better than an 85 win team. Even when they were struggling at 4-9, they had been close in all but a couple games. If they play .550 ball the rest of the way they'll finish with 92-93 wins. Barring another major injury I see no reason they shouldn't be able to do that.
  8. This probably doesn't qualify, but I still think it's a shame they didn't get more than a half season out of Corey Koskie. He was a fine left handed bat that played a good first base. It was one of Doug's best trades. I suppose you can argue if Koskie hadn't missed 2007 then Braun wouldn't have been called up. On the other hand last year they could have really used his bat and defense as the strong side of a platoon with Hall.
  9. I agree keeping Gamel was the right move. Even if he's not a great defensive player it seems he'll have more defensive value than LaPorta. Let me add I didn't mean to insinuate LaPorta will be a better player than Prince. I think he can be a lefty Burrell type though. That probably means he doesn't hit 35-40 homers a year, more like low 30's in his peak seasons.
  10. That would probably be a better defensive alignment. But my money says Hall won't play one inning at 2B. I see Macha keeping him and Gamel at 3rd, Counsell/McGehee/Iriibarren at 2nd to keep things simple. Counsell might play a Sunday or two at ss to give JJ a rest.
  11. I admit it, I didn't like trading Gross one bit. Essentially Doug gave him away when he didn't really need to. On the other hand, he really hasn't done much with Tampa Bay; a useful 4th OF'er, not all that hard to replace. Josh Butler, who they got in return, may still develop into an average innings eater. I think the only one we're really going to regret getting away is Matt LaPorta. No doubt you do that trade every time, but La Porta could be a monster bat for the next 8-10 years. Long after Prince is gone he could still be playing 1B for Cleveland, hitting 35-40 homers a year.
  12. The move was impulsive.
  13. They probably want Cat to get some at bats in the minors since he didn't really have Spring Training. I'd like to see Hurricane a couple times a week at 2B in the interim. He's alos been playing a little OF the last couple of years hasn't he? If he hits at all he could stay on the team the for the rest of the year.
  14. Nelson Cruz and Justin Lehr from Oakland for Keith Ginter. You can add Jason Kendall to the list. He was drafted by Jack in Pittsburgh.
  15. His best chance is in the AL. He can find a spot as a lefty DH/1B. I doubt any team seriously considers him a corner outfielder.
  16. Whatever happened to watching the game?
  17. Iribarren is hitting well in Nashville. Still, for now, I'd keep things as they are and look to bring up Catalanato to DH. Too bad they didn't have some big lefty 1B type to DH for the Minnesota series. You know, some kid who did well at AAA last year and should good potential in Spring Training.....
  18. If I'm doing this right his FIP after the first two games was 15.59. Considering he walked or hit 10 batters in his first 7-2/3rd innings this season, plus gave up 2 homers while only striking out 2, I think it's fair to say his heightened FIP so far indicates....nothing.
  19. Obviously it has tremendous limits but it's a handy, quick stat that gives you a pretty good view of a pitcher's worth. Doug built this rotation by assembling guys who provide quality starts, but aren't dominant pitchers. It's a less expensive way to give your team a chance to win every game. Over the course of a season a rotation that can give you 972 innings of 4.50 ERA makes the team legitimate contenders. I'd rather have a rotation like the Brewers than one that has a "true Ace" like Santana at the top, and "true Crap" like Hernandez and Perez at the bottom.
  20. The starting pitching is playing out exactly as I thought it would. There is tremendous value in 3-4-5 starters who never get injured and give you 30-34 starts at quality start ERA's.
  21. You make good point, Patrick. Thinking back whenever I've moved to a different seat it's always in a wide open area. I don't think I'd have the guts to into a crowded section in the 5th inning and sit right in front of someone who knew the guy that paid for the ticket just left. But if there's a cluster of open seats in an area, like there was in RF last summer at the Metrodome, I'm comfortable with moving in.
  22. If Rickie goes on the DL I think you'll see more PT for Gamel. Counsell and McGehee platoon at 2nd, Hall/Gamel at 3rd. I agree Catallanato is probably the one to be called up.
  23. They have my email, but I'm not signed up for the email alerts or newletter. I already get too much crap in my Inbox! I have the SD-DVR in my living room and an older standard reciever in my basement.
  24. I used to go to Twins games on "teacher/student" days and get in for 99 cents. The stadium would have about 7-9,000 people in it. If there were open seats behind home plate in the 5-6 innings you bet I would move down there. Last year my daughter and I were on the 1B side, in the middle of the row and crammed in by people all around us. We got up mid game to get something to eat and decided to sit out in RF rather than deal with crowd at the other seats. It's rude to start the game in someone else's seat and put them through the angst of a confrontation. When you get to the ballpark, find your seat and sit in it. If the row isn't full and your group can spread out that's fine. I think it's OK to move to another seat, even a higher priced one, after the 5/6th inning. However, I think if you are going to do that, you should be respectful of the people around you. Don't be a drunk, obnoxious lout.
