  1. When I intellectualize anything I'm naturally skeptical, but when I experience things I'm naive and optimistic. Baseball is the most beautiful game ever invented, and I love my Brewers whether they are god or bad. Just about every game is envigorating. Something happens that is interesting or proves a point. Baseball works so well in the microcosm, that even if my Brewers lose, a single excellent play can make up for it. Talking about the game afterwards we have every reason to be disappointed and even harsh or depressed, but while it's going on I enjoy myself almost completely. Being a bad team is part of the process of baseball. It's really something to experience. It's valuable. there's wisdom there, which is true compensation for the ordeal. I love it! I love them!
  2. This is a great idea. I'd even take a position player as long as he had real potential--a CF would be nice.
  3. I'd rather have Zito than either Harang or Arroyo, but we'd never get SF to pick up half his remaining contract. (Hall and Suppan and half of Zito's contract after Hall and Suppan's contracts expire for Zito).
  4. Yeah, I'm totally mad at myself. I am so weak and pathetic. I didn't think they could play .500 ball this year, what with one average starter and one above average starter and three below average starters, but instead I stabbed my fellow "pessimists" in the back.
  5. I'd like to see him pitching for the Crew, but it's simply not enough. Why would Arizona give up its sandwich pick? I'd pay 3 mil. for a late 1st rounder every time. I honestly can't see him changing teams.
  6. I don't know guys. This just seems like desparation. I love Escobar. I like him better than JJ, but I'm still not sure he should be up. JJ's value is definitely taking a hit. If Escobar does really well, and JJ never gets his spot back, well that's more than unfortunate--it's stupid. There is something to be said for taking your turn, waiting for the old guard to turn over, etc. Of course the upside in this scenario is that they get a good shortstop anyways. But still, as a small market team, you just can't give away talent or lose talent. ESPECIALLY when the problem is pitching, pitching, pitching. Sure Escobar improves the pitching, but not enough. If starters aren't available you don't tear the rest of the team apart. Hearing Melvin trying to defend himself tonight, hearing the emotion in his voice, really got me questioning him for the first time. I would be seriously surprised if Hardy is traded. Ken Rosenthal said tonight he expects Hall to be in SF. And finally poor Bill Castro. Now it's Bosio's turn to take it in the groin. Will Bosio ever get another major league job after being Melvined? These moves are tantamount to bailing water on the Titanic.
  7. I believe that humans in general cannot avoid working against their best interests at times. There's a real blind spot at times--Kendall gets an overabundance of patience, while Gerut is buried despite long term proof that the results will actually turn out quite the opposite. And what I don't really get is that Kendall is played even against conventional wisdom concerning catcher health/resting needs. Rivera needs to play 25% of the time minimally--although if I had my druthers Rivera would play 50%.
  8. 1) Gerut has gotten screwed by Macha. He should know better; the man needs some at bats. I wish they'd tank Cat. 2) Agreed, Cam is our best option for CF next year. It's too bad that money might be standing in the way of making it happen. 3) I don't care how well he does in the minors, Patterson has no business in the majors. I'd rather see Bill Hall there next year than Patterson. 4) Non-tendering Gerut next year will be a really bad idea, really bad.
  9. We aren't and it isn't looking good.
  10. Because it's my belief that a) Brewer attendance will be down a lot next year and money will be very tight, and b) Lopez isn't going to accept arby and we'll net the 2nd rounder for sure, and c) Hoffman while too expensive for a 75 to 85 win team in a bad economy, is still very tradeable once the season starts, or he signs with someone else and we get a sandwich and a second Now, if one believes that the Brewers are close to winning 90 to 95 wins next year, and season ticket holders step up next year, then by all means go for the gold and resign Cameron, Hoffman, whoever strikes your fancy. P.S. We've got Corey Patterson to replace Cameron with!!!!!!! Thee Corey Patterson, mighty Corey, the Corey-nator. Oh yeah, feels soooo good.
  11. I think you hit it on the head. The real problem is Cameron--he's just too expensive. The lack of competitiveness this year is gonna hurt the Brewers next year (that, and a crappy economy of course). The Crew have to let Cam and Kendall and Looper walk--maybe Hoffman too. If they sign any of these guys they're virtually assured of losing money next year. Now, if Brewer fans respond at the gate next year even though we probably won't be competitive, and then Hall's contract comes off the board, I can see them making a big push the following year. Lopez and Hoffman are they only ones that make slam-dunk sense to offer arby to, and even then I want no part of Hoffman on a 75 to 85 win team.
  12. I hate the idea of user fees. If my taxes go to someone in Green Bay for improvement of anything, but lets say for apples to apples comparison, improve Lambeau Field it doesn't matter to me that I would never use Lambeau or that I completely dislike pro football. My tax is a benefit to people in Green Bay. They are from Wisconsin. Wisconsin is my state and I'm loyal to it and all its people. If it benefits them, it benefits me even if I never set foot in the county.
  13. Actually I do agree. We need to give our minor leaguers a chance. I just don't think Salome will succeed, and Lucroy seems like a back up to me at this point, though I could see him turning it around.
  14. I'd wait until everyone has signed and pick up the dregs cheap no matter who it is. I don't think Hardy or Hart will be traded unless Melvin is willing to trade low, which is almost always a mistake. I want no part of a Type A free agent.
  15. I'd make the Snyder trade in a heartbeat even if I had to give up minor prospects. I can't see anyone on the horizon in the minors. Kendall has finally driven me off the ledge, and Snyder would be a big upgrade if he is an average defensive catcher.
  16. If they buy it will be a serious crimp in their future. Even if they got Halladay and Washburn it wouldn't be enough. Sit tight Crew or sell, sell, sell. Start gearing up for a two or three year run. (hopefully)
  17. Is this an issue? Is this news? Lets just ban all players stats and championships from...oh...lets see, 1995 till 2004 just to be on the safe side. Why am I even chiming in. Oh yeah, because I'm still blaming the Germans for WWII! Whew.
  18. I really don't think there are any answers unless Arizona gives away Davis. I think we have to have the institutional fortitude to stand pat and simply take our lumps. I suppose the exception would be trading Hardy, but I simply can't see the Brewers making any big moves that won't hurt us long term. Maybe moving Hart (I can't believe he's worth much) but I don't see it because Macha would pitch a fit, and then do something stupid like make Catalonado (sic) the replacement rather than Gerut. I agree McClung isn't the answer. I'd be willing to try Villy, but again I think he's in Macha's doghouse, and I've yet to see someone come out of there. Every alternative feels like grasping at straws.
  19. I think this trade, and Gamel's subsequent demotion is really about Ken Macha and not Doug Melvin. Heether obviously doesn't have the confidence of the Brewers, and it's just as obvious to me that the Crew is worried about the health of both Counsell and Casey. This is a lateral move in the sense that it keeps the Brewers as good as they are now. What scares me, is that this might be an indication that Doug thinks he can win the division. I'll say it till I'm blue in the face--this team is not a playoff team. The pitching isn't good enough, and only Hallady can make us a contenders, and since he's too expensive it's just not going to work. I'm disappointed by Macha if he turns out to be one of those anti-young guys managers. Gamel really was our best chance for the everyday line up, but since this isn't a playoff team it's a waste of service time to have him up in the Bigs. That said, I'd trade Mercedes and Cole just for the potential sandwich pick every year. So in the end I support the trade (and would have done it myself) with my usual dose of skepticism.
  20. I think Yo's continued inconsistency, and the lack of available pitching, I'd be selling for sure. Suppan, Looper, Cameron, Hart, Hardy. Heck--anyone not named Gamel, Fielder, Braun, or Yo I'd be willing to jettison for the correct young player.
  21. And Zito would be an enormous risk I realize, but with no pitching on the horizon, maybe a risk is in order. Zito would probably be our 2nd best starter right now. They'd also have to take someone like Suppan. Just a thought, but I understand your extreme disagreement; it is playing with fire.
  22. I'd opt for Zito. I think he's coming around. He's healthy; and he's had a number of excellent starts this year. Of course we'd need extra compensation because of the enormity of his contract.
  23. I hope I'm totally wrong about the outfield situation but I don't see any of those players mentioned that I believe will have an impact with the exception of Richardson, maybe Dennis. None of them are "can't miss" and each could easily fail all together, although it seems inevitable that Cain will get a shot.
  24. 1. Braun (I want to maximize the total number of at bats he gets) 2. Counsell, Casey (platoon with Casey getting all the at bats against lesser right-handers) 3. Fielder (if he's gonna hit like Albert, hit him where Albert resides) 4. Cameron 5. Gamel 6. Hart 7. Hardy 8. Kendall (with significant pinch hitting; I'd make sure he didn't 50% of the games he started; I never want him up in a clutch situation) Rivera (up his playing time to 30%) 9. pitcher
  25. Wow! What a well thought out great thread--thanks guys. I think the fly in the ointment may be Bush's health. I got a very bad feeling about this. I agree on the Hardy trade--he has to go for young pitching. But I can't see signing Fielder long term. I don't think Prince wants it, and Boras won't allow a home discount. His health will always be a question even as he remains healthy, and at, oh I don't know, 15 to 20 million per I can't envision the brewers doing this. The Reed johnson idea is great short term thinking, and I must say that Cameron has to be resigned and Kendall let go. I love the idea of trading Green+ for pitching as well, though I doubt he's really worth all that much. If the Brewers can get lucky and have one young pitcher come fast (Braddock, Arnette) or have Butler really surprise them and be more than just serviceable that could really save the Crew long term. We need a little luck pitching wise. From my view the other real problem is that there are no legit prospects in the outfield. Cain, Gillespe, you name it--I doubt any of them is better than a 4th or 5th outfielder. Maybe Walla, but that's a snowball's chance and way, way off.
