  1. I'm not saying the cupboard is bare, but it FEELS depleted. This is a preceptual problem and in my case--my problem. 1) There doesn't seem to be any superstars 2) Brewer minor league teams are not doing very well overall it seems--not like in the past 3) Our core players at the major league level have significant holes, and so our minor leaguers, which don't seem to have as much talent, seem that much worse 4) These potential waves are not really putting up stunning numbers--again in comparison to what's come before, ie Prince, Braun 5) It's a cold comfort when trying to compete with big market clubs that we're producing a bunch of role players, average major leaguers and fill-ins. Without a consistent stream of Gallardos, Brauns, and Fielders we will fail as an organization Again, and I repeat adamantly--this is my problem. I depend on people like ColbyJack to assuage my fears--but it just seemed so much more obvious before that our talent was first class. Now, throw in the loss of Jack Z and his henchmen and well, jeez, I don't know. It feels like the good old early 80s in the farm system.
  2. Like Joe Pepsi, I'm sad to see Torres go. It's unusual for an ahtlete to be so passionate and so articulate. But I applaud him for turning down millions of dollars because his family is more important. I wish other older athletes would choose this option more often. I vote for Villy as closer. I think he has the mental toughness. I think he could be a Trevor Hoffman in waiting. I hope this mean that DeFelice makes the club. And I hope Macha loves the three inning save. Guys like McClung and Villy and DeFelice could manage that kind of situation while keeping the bullpen fresh.
  3. 1. We actually have no proof one way or the other that he doesn't sit on the couch all day, but he is a fat guy--really fat, and worse yet short and fat.2. Being a professioanl athlete doesn't make one healthy automatically. 3. I'm sorry if I offended your sensibilities, but if I'm trying to evaluate a professioanl athlete, and his long term health isn't a part of the picture, then I'm not doing my job correctly. And if I'm evaluating a man of obese proportions then an early death is definitley in the scenario since the attendant health problems prcluding that death definitely will affect me and my organization (I don't think he'll die during his playing career, but the pre-conditions exist to a much greater degree than say Gabe Kapler). And in my opinion, which isn't worth a thing, so be it, this is merely a forum for ideas, is that Prince Fielder is a walking time bomb. 4. "totally uncalled for"? Really? I'll give you "uncalled for", but "totally"? I'll choose to disagree with you on that. In King Lear two daughters give the acceptable answer, only one tells the ungilded truth as offensive as it is. Someone needs to confront Prince Fielder for his own good.
  4. I don't know. I don't want my closer letting too many balls in play. On another topic. Wouldn't Bush be the number 1 recipient of the Brewers improved defense considering how many balls he does allow in play? And wouldn't that make him more likely to repeat last year's fine season.
  5. Giles would be a great fit, but alas the stars just don't align. The disparity in age, the contract, Giles own wishes. I think this is a great "what if" trade.
  6. Mainly, because he appears to be so unhealthy that he may work his way outta this league very quickly. Take a look at life expectancy of really large professional athletes--it's ghastly. It illustrates why Loney does in fact have a lot more upside--because Prince's downside is cavernous. I hope it doesn't come to fruition, but given the visual evidence you gotta say that Loney will have a much longer career. maybe not, but you've got to consider it. The Brewers on the other hand have to get Prince serious medical attention. He may choose to ignore, but then I'd be more apt to trade him for a lot of stiffs in this league, much less a young guy who does have actual upside.
  7. Look, Corey has proved exactly two things: he can be an exciting player who is a joy to watch, and he can be an undisciplined hacker that the league has figured out. Which one are we going to end up with? Ultimately I wouldn't presume to know, but my gut tells me more the latter than the former. The last impression is more persuaive, but many have made mistakes trying to predict a trend. I guess I'm saying I would be open to a trade, but it would have to fill a hole long term (young starting pitcher, young 3B) otherwise I'd hold off and sink or swim with him. It's a tough call indeed.
  8. When Fielder is dead at 48 years old lets talk upside.
  9. This is a classic case when the contradictionis true. Game 1 is as important as game 162. But it is also true that 162 is mor important than game 1. It's all down to context.
  10. I want no part of this guy. Have you ever seen him implode on the mound. It's like the old-Zambrano. I think he's gonna get a crap load of money. Money I'd rather the Crew spent on elsewhere.
  11. I can't seeing this happen; I can't see Fielder going anywhere yet. He's got to have a truly monster year again to be tradeable.
  12. I love Cameron (he certainly was better than Hart), and wouldn't deal him for Cabrera/Betimit unless a good pitcher was included. That said I think a Cameron/Kennedy swap even up would be fair to both teams. Kennedy could turn out to be a number two starter, but in all likelihood probably a number three or four. Cameron is the kind of player who can carry a team with his power and defense for awhile, not a long while, but sometime. Also, as active as the Yankees are going to be, I doubt Kennedy is in their plans big time, maybe as a plausible option, but not a cornerstone. Let them keep the other two--ask for Kennedy or walk away Dougie.
  13. I don't want to make any moves outside the organization. I want every avenue explored before I go out and waste money and players on an established closer. I'd rather try Dillard (just an example) than package him and others to get Street (just an example). The chances are that the Crew are not going to be particularly competitive next year, so I'd concentrate on long range solutions to systemic problems (lack of prospects, 3B, CF, left handed hitting).
  14. I'd go Wang/Cameron even up. But then again I don't mind being laughed at.
  15. Yeah. 100 million seems like a lowball offer to me as well. Not in the sense of an insult, but in the sense this-is-the-best-we-can-do-I-know-it's-not-enough-but-we-just-wanna-let-you-know-how- much-we-love-ya offer. I'm guessing he gets 160/6. When Suppan types are making over 10 mil, 160/6 seems reasonable. Think of this from a big market perspective. If big market teams can explode payrolls to the point where small market teams will lose significant money just to play .500 ball, you really only have to compete against 10 or 12 teams total. If I was the big boys I'd drive the price up radically and watch the small market guys die on the vine.
  16. My own guess is that Bennie thinks Milwaukee threw him under the bus (fans for their reaction and organization for not taking care of a contract before the beginning of last season), and he can't wait to get out. I think we have a greater chance of signing CC (5%) than Sheets (1%).
  17. What I liked about Macha was that he let it be known that he would hold players responsible for being productive, but that he, himself, would be responsible for teaching or developing the skills his players needed to be responsible.
  18. And this is the reason that we need guys in the pen who can give starters like Sheets the 3 inning save. As pointed out here, you can't push pitch limits on a guy like Sheets. I think Sveum knew this. I hope Macha does.
  19. I'm a regular season kinda guy. Playoffs tend to be boring for me, and I stress me, so I watch all the regular season I can and ignore all the post-season.
  20. Congrats to Jack--he totally deserve it. If this was last year though I be angry, but now I'm not so concerned. The bloom has come off the rose on many of his draft picks: Hart, Weeks, Fielder, Gamel, etc. He just doesn't seem like the slam dunk. I'm probably overstating it, but the farm system doesn't really seem loaded at all; I don't envision a second wave, and wouldn't be upset with the trade of anyone except Braun.
  21. Why would the Red Sox want the Sumo-Prince. They went through the Vaughn debacle once before. If we got that from them it would be totally one-sided trade--something I can't see, but I'll be crossing my fingers.
  22. Unless they need the money to sign CC, I'm for resigning Cameron. If they cut him loose they get no compensation, but if he plays here next year at roughly the same rate I'm sure he'll be a Type-B free agent (though I can't say this with abolute certainty). What we really need to do is get a third baseman and acquire a better OBP rightfielder. Hart is the real evil in the outfield, not Cameron.
  23. 1) The draft--hopefully there will be five legit 1st round choices 2) a bullpen that includes Dillard, DeFelice, and Stetter 3) more of a long term approach to problems--the frank recognition that they're going no where, but still keeping Gamel and Escobar in the minors for a full year 4) a better fan in Milwaukee, one that understands the long and laborious process that a small market team must take to become consistent 5) a better co-ordinated minor league system that's absolutely consistent in its approach to hitting/fielding
  24. They are getting closer to the Twins-Model, which is the only way we're going to survive.
