  1. The bottom line is--SO IT BEGINS--the longish road that leads Prince outta Milwaukee. I'd rather not put up with the drama and whining. Funny thing is Prince seems like a sensitive guy. I do believe it will affect him even while he remains on guard against such a situation. I just knew these contracts like Turlowitski would come back to bite small market clubs, now every decent young player can start the demands. I love baseball.
  2. The Cubs are rightfully the favorites. The Cubs win at 1B, 3B, C, LF Brewers are better at 2B, SS, CF, RF. I trust the Cubs starters more, but our starters have more upside. I trust our bullpen more, but the Cubs bullpen has more upside by a lot. Hmmmmm...I think I just convinced myself that the Crew is gonna take it.
  3. Why don't we call everyone who was concerned a "pessimist" and forever minimize the value of what they say here after.
  4. So then Biggio is history's worst 3000 hit, hitter then?
  5. I hope it works out, because this story really is very boring.
  6. I think it was a pretty good off season. If Gagne holds down the fort, they'll be no worse off than last year and probably better because of the overall defensive improvement. The only place I see as a major failure is in obtaining a major starting pitcher. I think this is our achilles heal, and the reason why the Mets and Diamondbacks should be considered the favorites right now. I thought the two best aquisitions this off-season were Haren and Santana, followed closely by Bedard. If we make the playoffs, it'll be a short run for the Crew because their starters just don't match up. It could be that Melvin's hands were tied, and that other teams were simply better armed than the Brewers for making trades and signing free agents, so that's why I'd give Melvin a B and the benefit of the doubt. I'd would've been willing to give up one of the young guys, probably Hart, for significant pitching, but I've always come from the pitching/defense beats hitting philosophy camp.
  7. I think Fondy hits the nail on the head. The Brewers stealing bases is a fool's game. We don't make enough contact; I don't think we take enough pitches, and when we do hit the ball it's so dang hard that a guy with decent speed is going to score from 1st on a double anyways. If Yost gets enamored of the steal this year I think he'll run us out of a lot of innings. Of course the exception is Rickie--run Rickie run!
  8. Not sure I want him running that much, but what the hey, it's possible. If he were batting 6th or 7th I'd say he had a better chance since manufacturing runs are probably more at a preimium down in the order. My gut tells me he falls a little short in the SB dept.
  9. I've often thought the same thing. I don't want to know any player's overall stats. I wanna know what he hits like against other three star or higher prospects or how he pitches against three star or higher prospects. The minors are littered with ineffectual players filling up rosters etc. Why would anyone take stats against these players for anything more than they are worth? Why would we weight them evenly?

  12. Last night I was listening to XM Radio. Mike (I think that's his first name) Bloom from MLB.com thinks that Bonds won't be playing this year anywhere unless he gets a very quick release from the charges against him. I love the guy, but he's a pariah, and I think retirement is just the ticket. I can't see how the 3000 hits is gonna help him. I can't imagine him ever getting into the HOF given the current situation. Without the collective forgiveness of voters or the culture as a whole I think Clemens, Bonds, Palmiero, and Big Mac are doomed.
  13. Gagne and Sheets both need to be TYPE A free agents.
  14. Poor Dusty... I'l give him credit for one thing here. IF, and that's a big IF, IF he means that some players are becoming so timid at the plate in pursuit of a high OBP that it affects their SLG then he may have a small point. But I'm reading a lot into that. Otherwise he's just fundamentally wrong.
  15. Four things: I'm encouraged overall with the look of the bullpen, because while I believe there will be as many ups and downs as last year, those ups won't be as high and those downs won't be as low. I think this will enable the manager to predict performance more easily, and find the right man for the job. Secondly, with so many inning eaters in the pen I think the work load can be more evenly distributed, cauing less strain on the staff overall. And I'm guessing that the options at AAA are going to be better in case there's an injury or a flame out. Over the course of a long season I can't imagine were not going to dip down sometime. Finally, my fondest wish is for Gagne to be kick-ass, All-Star, return to form, super dude. Any thing to make him a TYPE A free agent so that we can keep Jack well stocked with bullets.
  16. I understand this kind of diversion if a team has success. I don't know, maybe I'm just an old fart with an axe to grind. But yeah, it can be harmless fun that keeps a certain type of fan involved.
  17. Can't see Benny in a uni other than a big market team, or some team with a seriously low payroll. He's too much of a risk even if he excels this year. I think it'll follow Cordero scenario, close but no cigar. I'd even bet that length of contract is the determining factor. He's worth a 3 year deal--I'd guess 48 mil. I think he'll get a 4 year deal at 68. That's assuming he's not injured and has a good year. If something goes wrong with him those number will ratchet down considerably.
  18. I believe him. He's the first owner in Milwaukee I can say that of. He's sincere. He's smart. And either he's a total anomaly or I'm naive as they come. I'll accept either.
  19. Good point. That's exactly how I feel about the Sausage Race. It's so pointless. It's just makes me annoyed that an institution would waste resources on a frivilous idea when success has been so illusive.
  20. While I just cringe at the thought of Gabe Gross as an everyday player, he's an excellent player off the bench. I hope Milwaukee keeps him unless we can extract a valuable minor leaguer at a position of need. In the long term however I really don't see a place for him. LaPorta, lets not forget about Gamel, with Hart and Braun--there really isn't a place for him after this year. But for now he performs a valuable duty, and in a close race any small advantage could lead to important results. Keep him.
  21. I like the idea with Kendall only. With Munson or Rivera, not so much. Kendall doesn't clog up the basepaths luike the other two will. I love hitting Braun 2nd because over the course of the year he's just going to get more ABs. In the 3rd spot I like Gross and then Cameron later. I also like the idea of a better hitter pinch hitting in the eigth spot rather than the ninth spot when the game is on the line.
  22. I agree that everything changes with Howard's arby award. In no time at all I can see that number doubling--maybe 3/4 years. So a small market team better lock up a guy like Braun and Fielder at an affordable 10 to 15 mil per season as opposed to the 20+ mil per in the last couple arby years. It'll also make the player probably be willing to give a small home team discount come free agency.
  23. It's about time. I mean what does your average Green Bay Packer fan do in the off-season?
  24. That's a great question. Why would any one want a major league contract (Bush/Cappy/Vargas) when a minor league contract will do. Think about it. Most teams will take some time before they determine their in-season pitching needs. By that time Colon has either proved himself or not. If he proves himself then the team can tell Melvin to stuff it as he tries to deal a #5 starter. If Colon doesn't prove himself, no harm done, back to plan A. Nice signing. I'm surprised he didn't sign with the Reds or Cards.
  25. I hope it's not the Type A free agent that's keeping him from signing--I'd much prefer the blackballing, makes a better story, a more fitting ending to his career.
