  1. They also make metal straws that you can wash in the dishwasher. BYO.
  2. Legitimate reasons, but if you know you're getting it to go, bring your own cup/bottle with a lid and pour it into it.
  3. Something wrong with putting the glass/cup/bottle to your lips? One of the reasons for ordering beer - they never give you a straw.
  4. We'll find out next week when Maryland comes to Camp Randall and Penn State gets Ohio State at home. Penn State only scored 17 against Northwestern at home. I wouldn't place a large wager that they'd come out on top of the Big Ten West.
  5. Yeah, let Illinois take that (butt)-whipping. How would you like to be Iowa right now? Their leading scorers are a tie between Caleb Johnson and the defense. Defense has more TDs than their QB. And on top of that, their former WR Charlie Jones has more than twice as many receiving yards for Purdue this year than he had all of last year with Iowa.
  6. Not just post-Jonny, but also post-Brad. Don't undervalue what Davison brought on both ends of the floor, at the free throw line, in the locker room, and during practice. His 3-point shooting was mediocre, but he brought a lot of intangibles and I won't forget him hanging 29 on UNC in the tourney two years ago.
  7. For once, Clancy might not be off his rocker ?. I don't know about a 4-5 year deal, but given that there are only three SP above A-ball on the MLB Top 30 prospect list and one of them had a serious meltdown this year and another is #30, I think it may be wise to buy out one year of FA and try to get Houser on a 3-year deal through age 32. Houser is 29, and while he has one shot at FA I think he knows that he doesn't have the resume to command an 8-figure/year deal, and with the injuries he had this past season a guarantee of $12M-$15M or so for three years to set him up for life might be too good to pass up and work out well for both sides.
  8. As others have said, the lack of upper level SP depth makes it very unlikely that they non-tender him, and Small falling apart pretty much cemented it. I do believe he was playing hurt for several weeks before he went on the DL. Through his first 10 starts in 2022 he had a 3.51 ERA and 3.62 FIP. In his last six appearances of the season (five starts) after coming off of the DL (excluding throwing him to the wolves against the Dodgers in his first game back) he had a 3.38 ERA and 4.20 FIP. In 2021 Houser had the 6th highest soft hit % of any pitcher with at least 100 IP, second lowest hard-hit % (just ahead of Burnes), and fourth highest ground-ball %. He's not a swing-and-miss pitcher, and his command gets away from him at times, but the analytics suggest that if you put a good defense behind him he can be a very effective pitcher.
  9. Full games in-person, or just highlights on ESPN? Everyone looks good in highlights, and ESPN/FOX/etc. financially benefit by pumping up the guys at the big programs to be better than they really are because they can charge more for advertising. This board has operated for literally decades on showing stats to back up your opinions. Show some stats.
  10. Big Ten QB ratings: C.J. Stroud - 207.6 (#1 in the country) J.J. McCarthy - 170.6 (#12 in the country) Graham Mertz - 157.7 (#26 in the country) T. Tagovailoa - 157.6 (#27 in the country) Tanner Morgan - 156.4 (#36) Casey Thompson - 148.2 (#51) Tommy DeVito - 145.8 (#56) Aidan O'Connell - 140.5 (#65) Sean Clifford - 137.4 (#70) Payton Thorne - 136.6 (#72) That's all of them in the top 100.
  11. They redid Granato's contract this offseason and he's only owed something like $1M if they fire him before the end of the season. Highly likely he doesn't finish the season.
  12. Both USC and Wisconsin have played Washington State at home this season. Caleb Williams: 15-29, 52% completion, 188 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, 128.9 passer rating Graham Mertz: 18-31, 58% completion, 227 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, 134.4 passer rating USC had four 4-star WRs transfer in prior to the season, including the 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner Jordan Addison, and signed a fifth as an incoming true freshman.
  13. I think this is based on several assumptions that don't apply to everyone: You have to live in the same area - people who are retired or people who now can work remote don't have to stay in the same area, opening up many, many options You have to buy another house - there is nothing wrong with renting, especially now with interest rates high You have a family - many homeowners are single or a couple w/no kids and can get a one-bedroom if they need to, opening up many more options You have to have a home that has A, B, C, D, E, F, and G - you don't need stainless steel appliances, an attached 2-car garage, hardwood floors, quartz counters, open kitchen/living room, heated bathroom floor, etc., especially if you are only renting for a year or less There's plenty of housing options out there (so long as you don't have a big family).
  14. Bryce Young vs: ULM: 215.1 VAN: 195.5 USU: 181.7 ARK: 175.6 TEN: 153.5 TEX: 123.6 Caleb Williams vs: STAN: 229.1 RICE: 211.4 UTAH: 175.0 ASU: 173.3 FRES: 149.9 WSU: 128.9 (Mertz - 134.4) ORST: 95.6 Everybody pads their stats against lower competition.
  15. For their careers, Mertz currently has 34 TDs to 22 INTs on 654 career attempts - 3.34% INT probability. Stave had 48 TDs to 37 INTs (1.30 TDs/INT) on 1,031 career attempts - 3.59% INT probability. Stave literally was more likely to throw it to the wrong colored uniform. Mertz played with an injured shoulder all last season.
  16. Graham Mertz is currently 26th in FBS in passer rating at 157.7. For reference, Caleb Williams is 17th at 162.3 and pre-season Heisman favorite Bryce Young is 13th at 167.2. And those guys have a helluva lot more talent at WR and OL around them. You would be surprised how many inaccurate passes other QBs throw.
  17. Iowa has five 2024 recruits, Michigan State has two, and Ohio State/Michigan/Penn State/Minnesota have one. Eight Big Ten teams have no 2024 recruits. Four of Iowa's recruits are from small towns in Iowa.
  18. If Allen had run straight instead of pussyfooting around and going to the outside there was a small seam.
  19. Bortolini starting over Beach. Didn't hear anything about an injury or illness, but maybe he got sick last night/this morning. Dackovich with I believe his first offensive snaps, at least his first not in garbage time. Isaiah Mullens out.
  20. The two most difficult jumps in levels in baseball are AAA to the majors and A+ to AA. Personally, I place more value in guys who have successfully made the jump to AA. For me, the lower level guys need to be killing it in order to put them ahead of guys in AA-AAA who are doing really well. That's also why I have Mendez so low; yes, he is very young and has nice plate discipline, but a .318 SLG need drastic improvement to give me the confidence that he can make the jump to AA. Same with Carlos Rodriguez (OF). Also, I place extra value on someone who plays a premium position where it's hard to find both good offense and defense. If he played LF/2B/etc, I would not have him ranked this high.
  21. I went with health. I think the Brewers will try to run it back in 2023 and if Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, and Houser aren't healthy not do the Brewers not stand a chance, but those players won't have good trade value either. Health also extends to Yelich. Mitchell has struggled with health in his minor league career. Regardless of whether they go for it or rebuild, have to have good health to achieve either.
  22. 1 S. Frelick 2 J. Chourio 3 B. Turang 4 G. Mitchell 5 J. Wiemer 6 R. Gasser 7 T. Black 8 E. Ruiz 9 J. Quero 10 J. Misiorowski 11 E. Brown 12 J. Jarvis 13 E. Small 14 C. Devanney 15 C. Robinson 16 C.F. Rodriguez (P) 17 F. Valerio 18 R. Smith 19 A. Cornielle 20 St. Cruz 21 V. Castaneda 22 L. Henderson 23 D. Miller 24 A. Uribe 25 M. Sanchez 26 M. Feliciano 27 J. Avina 28 E. Garcia 29 E. W. Martinez 30 H. Mendez
  23. Sixteen blown saves after the trade deadline, most in the majors. Injuries to their starters and the poor performance of the bullpen trade acquisitions was the downfall of this team. A healthy Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, and Lauer gives them a chance against anybody.
  24. Last year there were only three games started by anyone other than Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Houser, Lauer, Anderson, and Ashby, with Ashby starting four games. The six starters they had planned on accounted for 155 of 162 games started. IIRC, they had a six-man rotation at times last year, reducing the number of starts they had to make. In 2022 it was 16 games not started by their six planned starters (Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Houser, Lauer, Ashby). No luxury of a six-man rotation.
