  1. In case you didn't notice, Florida Atlantic ran the table in their conference and won their bowl game 50-3. There's also no logic to this, because what if you had scheduled Notre Dame last year - what type of team were you expecting, and what type of team did you get? What if you had scheduled Western Michigan last year - what type of team were you expecting, and what type of team did you get? Your non-conference SOS would look very different if you had scheduled those teams last year vs this year. You have no idea how good these teams are going to be in 5-6 years when you schedule them.
  2. This, this, and this. The national championship was Georgia vs. Oklahoma. Clemson loses to a 4-8 team and gets in, Wisconsin loses to the #5 team in the country and doesn't get in. I still want to know what the W/L record is for top-10 teams for home night games over the last three years. Wisconsin didn't just win their bowl game, they won a night road game against a top-10 team.
  3. Suggests to me that there were multiple claims and someone ahead of the Dodgers put in a claim as well.
  4. Montgomery wasn't better because he had broken ribs this year. Last year when he was healthy he averaged 5.9 YPC and 7.9 YPR. This year Cook averaged 4.8 YPC and 8.2 YPR.
  5. You mean like the Packers and Montgomery? [sarcasm]Dalvin Cook and his 22.5 receiving yards per game (for all of four games) sure was the key to Minnesota's success this year. They really ran the offense through him! So much more than Montgomery's 21.6 receiving yards per game this year...[/sarcasm]
  6. None of us knows what Hundley looks like in practice. Maybe he's one of those guys who looks good in practice but can't make the decisions in a game. Plenty of interesting developmental QBs likely to go in round 3 or later. The guy I'm looking at is Riley Ferguson of Memphis; he was stuck behind Josh Dobbs (same recruiting class) at Tennessee and transferred but was a 4-star pro-style QB recruit. No one is talking about him as a 1st/2nd round pick, but in two years at Memphis has put up strong numbers (70 TDs, 19 INTs) and has ideal height at a listed 6'4". Mason Rudolph has his critics, but also has put up 9000 yards and 65 TDs/13 INTs over the last two years. Luke Falk has thrown for over 100 TDs in three years at WSU, and Mike White of WKU wasn't as good as he was last year but still has 63 TD/15 INT over the last two seasons. Nic Shimonek was stuck behind Pat Mahomes, but had a solid year as a starter for a bad TTU team. All of those guys have ideal size (6'3" or taller, 220+ lbs) for the NFL.
  7. Adam Schefter reporting that Dom Capers will not be back next year. And there will be much rejoicing.
  8. I'd argue that if their starting QBs were out for 10 weeks you would find the flaws on their teams as well.
  9. I wonder what the won-loss record is for Top 25 teams with home night games this past season? Have any ever lost? The NCAA playoff committee can kiss my royal white arse.
  10. I'll say it again, when 2/3rds of the league is drafting ahead of you for eight consecutive seasons that's what happens. The Vikings have drafted ahead of the Packers every year since 2010; they should be better than the Packers.
  11. It still boggles my mind that Clemson lost to a 4-8 team and is the "#1 seed", but UW lost to the #5 team in the country and is not in the playoff. Soft non-conference schedule? Florida Atlantic ran the table in their conference and won their bowl game 50-3. I can't root for Penn State under any circumstances, but was very pleased with Ohio State's performance yesterday.
  12. Packers also extend Linsley. Reportedly 3 years, $8.5M/year. This was a high priority, as they had no one to step in behind him. These extensions are important because the Packers can allocate a % of those signing bonuses to this year's cap, and they have $10M in extra cap room available.
  13. Based on what? Packers receivers don't rack up a ton of stats because of the depth they have. The guys who put up big numbers don't have a #2/#3 with the caliber of Nelson/Cobb to share the ball with. Adams is 2nd in the league in TDs despite having Hundley start a majority of the games this year, and was 2nd in the league in TDs last year. He's a weapon in the red zone because of his length and leaping ability.
  14. Over his last five games, Henson is 27-35 (77%) from the floor. Over his last nine games, 46-63 (73%). I don't know that I've ever seen that type of shooting % over that long of a stretch from anyone.
  15. I remember from the winter meetings, can't remember if it was an owner or a GM, someone said, "five year contracts for pitchers don't end well". I think other teams are doing the analysis - looking at prior longer-term deals for pitchers - on the contracts (performance, age regression, subtracting DL time, etc.) and finding out what the real cost of those longer term deals are. I said it before and I'll say it again, if you look at the peripherals and somewhat advanced stats Cobb's comp is a 30-year-old Matt Garza. Looking back, Garza wasn't worth 4/$52M, so Cobb can't expect to get even that.
  16. Of course they're approaching him. But Leonhard played in the NFL for 10 years and by my estimates made over $10M in his career - he's already financially set for life. He's not a former struggling grad assistant who made next to nothing for years; I highly doubt he would jump to another school for a couple hundred thousand a year. Plus, he's in as low pressure of a situation as he will ever have at UW; if he goes to another school, he's just another coach who is expected to deliver results immediately or be fired in four years. I don't think he wants to put his family through that when he doesn't need the money. I highly doubt he would make a lateral move. His next move will either be for a HC position, or more likely, a NFL DC position.
  17. Yes, and some of the scouting reports that people reference for these guys are pre-draft scouting reports that are now two years old for some players. Also, I question scouting reports that say Jean Carmona has a body comp to Jean Segura when Carmona is listed as 6'2", 190 - in no way is that a body comp to Segura. Curious as to why Garcia predominantly plays 1B. At 6'3", 185, it seems like he would be athletic enough to play 3B (I thought he was drafted as a catcher) or somewhere else. Just about everyone is going to be better defensively at 1B than 3B, so that's not the answer. I don't know if he has the raw power to stay at 1B, so why not let him try to get better at 3B?
  18. The cap is estimated to go up ~$10M and the Packers are carrying over $10M from this year (this has been one of my big criticisms of TT - he's had the cap room to make in-season trades for veterans to shore up areas of injuries/weaknesses, but hasn't). http://www.packersnews.com/story/sports/nfl/packers/2017/12/26/silverstein-salary-cap-growth-eases-packers-free-agency-risk/980867001/ According to a source with access to NFL Players Association salary-cap data, the Packers have 39 players under contract for 2018 at a cost of $145 million. They will carry over $10 million in leftover cap space from 2017 and thus will have an adjusted cap number of around $187 million. It means that they’ll go into the offseason with about $42 million in salary-cap room. Cap space isn't an issue, so it's a matter of talent. I'll take the guy who was 6th in the NFL in receiving yards and led the league in TDs last year (and was leading the league in TD catches this year when Rodgers got hurt on 10/15). Nelson has one year left on his contract; I'm inclined to let it play out. Part of his and Rodgers' effectiveness is their chemistry and ability to see the defense and both know exactly what the other is thinking. Bringing in a new guy who might be a little better will lose that chemistry, and the net effect will be less than having Nelson. That's why it took Adams three years to produce; it takes a while to learn the route tree and get up to Rodgers' game speed.
  19. Everyone said Goff, Wentz, and Bortles were busts after their rookie year. I think they said the same thing about Rodgers after his rookie year (or at least his rookie camp). I find it laughable to call any QB a bust after their rookie year.
  20. Well, when Hundley is throwing you the ball and not Rodgers, and the ball is at your feet or behind you, it's hard to keep your balance.
  21. Last year, with a healthy Rodgers, Nelson was sixth in the NFL with 1257 receiving yards and led the league with 14 TDs. You want him cut?
  22. No Rodgers, no Adams, no Bulaga, no Evans, Spriggs goes out on the first play, Nelson goes out in the 2nd quarter, no Matthews, no Perry, no Randall, no King. Lucas Patrick in at RG, McCray in at RT, and a WR corp of Allison, Davis, Janis, and Michael Clark. Kendricks and Allison dropping passes, and Davis calling fair catches at the five yard line. What the hell is Hundley supposed to do?
  23. Shouldn't the title of the thread be Packers Offseason Moves [sarcasm](what you want)[/sarcasm]? Tom Silverstein on why Capers should go: https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/nfl/packers/2017/12/22/silverstein-packers-must-move-dom-capers/977755001/ Receivers, tight ends and running backs running free, defensive linemen jumping offside, and maybe the worst of all, quarterback Cam Newton caught on television telling linebacker Clay Matthews before the snap, “You’ve been watching film, huh? Watch this.” “This” turned out to be Newton throwing to halfback Christian McCaffrey running uncovered over the middle for an easy touchdown while the Packers bungled a coverage they had worked on during the week. Perhaps the most damning evidence of how disjointed things are on defense is the improvement Martinez, cornerback Damarious Randall, nose tackle Kenny Clark and linebacker Kyler Fackrell made this season. That should have been transformational for a defense that ranked 22nd in yards allowed, 21st in points and 26th in opponent passer rating last season.
  24. Gatewood is one of the toughest guys for me to evaluate. Zooming out, I have to keep in mind that he was in AA at the age of 21. I keep wondering if the eyesight/vision was causing problems on defense at 3B too; small sample alert, but last year in 317 innings at 3B he had a not-terrible .953 fielding % (for reference, Kris Bryant posted a .949 fielding % last year and only five qualified 3B had a fielding % of .970 or better). If he can play a passable 3B defensively he has a lot more value.
