  1. Trade Broxton and then platoon Brinson and Phillips. With Braun's typical injuries/days off, and with defensive substitutions late in games for Braun/Santana, pinch-hitting for pitchers, etc., there will be plenty of playing time for Brinson and Phillips, and it will help ease their transitions to major league pitching and help set both up for success. Braun (LF), Santana (RF), Brinson/Phillips (CF). 5th OF Perez, possibly Wren if Perez is only backup 2B/3B/SS.
  2. Yes, it's only with the player's current team that they can only reduce salary by 10% per year. Otherwise you'd have teams trying to skirt the luxury tax threshold by paying a player $40M one year and $1M the next, and that screws up QOs, arbitration, and many other things. Since Walker was traded mid-season in the last year of his deal the Brewers cannot make him a QO. Not sure how that affects the negotiation window or if it makes him an automatic free agent, but IIRC there is a rule that if a player does not resign with his current team by a certain date they cannot resign him until well into the next spring, maybe not until after the season starts. The Brewers might have to release Walker before the end of the season in order to bring him back at less than $15M for next year.
  3. Ah, yes, forgot that the QB is a lefty and that RT will be the blind side. Comparing the DL to '04 (and I think the 2010 line of Watt/Allen/Hemer/Gilbert/Kohut/Butrym/Nzegwu was better than the '04 line) is a bit of apples/oranges, as the DL responsibilities of a 4-3 are very different than a 3-4. In a 3-4 the job of the DL is to occupy the OL to free up the LBs to make plays; they are not expected to rush the passer. But there is a lot of talent - Sagapolu, Rand, Obasih, James, Sheehy, Loudermilk (who will be a monster), and Hirschfeld isn't even on the 2-deep (nor is Preston, Howe, or Pfaff). Those guys have a ton of experience and do their job of occupying the OL.
  4. Houser was in the majors at age 22, and the Brewers sent him to the AFL after that 2015 season, so I think they already have a decent idea of how he would fare against AFL competition. The only question is rehab and being medically ready.
  5. I went to bed and missed it.. Why are we running Barnes out of town? Is he in danger? Because he walked a guy. You know, because every other reliever in the league has perfect innings, they never give up walks or hits.
  6. I'm going with Bickford, Perrin (about 50 innings behind last year), Ortiz (right now same innings as last year, would like to add 20-25 more), and one of Houser/QTC. Houser went three innings in his last start, not sure if he's far enough along or if the Brewers would prefer to monitor him and his rehab in fall instructionals.
  7. Some 3B? Every game at AA he's played 3B (16 games), except for one game as DH. I wouldn't call that "some" 3B.
  8. And Ray... not so much. Golden (brown?) sombrero.
  9. The CBA only allows a team to reduce a player's salary by a maximum of 10% year over year, so the minimum the Brewers could pay Walker on an extension is $15.5M next year, $14M the year after. They will have to release him in order to bring him back on a reasonable salary.
  10. Sitton wasn't cut because of salary or because they thought Lane Taylor was better. There were rumors of multiple locker room issues with him, and he was openly critical of MM to the press. And Sitton was a pro-bowl player (popularity contest), not all-pro.
  11. I'm concerned about offensive tackle. Edwards is still fairly raw, and they didn't have enough confidence in him to let him take LT thus the move for Dieter to LT and inserting a freshman in at center. Dietzen needs to get healthy; his return to the lineup last year coincided with the improvement in the running game, and that's no coincidence. On the plus side, they are deep at RB and it seems like they have the horses again to make the jet sweep a big part of the offense again. Taylor is really coming on and now is listed as an "or" at first team on the depth chart. Shaw, James, Taylor, Ibrahim, Deal... not as talented as Ball/White/Gordon, but as deep or deeper. Defensive line will be the best its ever been. We could finally see the real Leon Jacobs - yeah, the dude who ran down Gordon in practice but for some reason could never find a way to get him on the field. I'm anxious to see what he will do back on the outside. Fortunately they have the depth to survive the injuries at LB. Could be the best cornerback trio in the conference, and one of the best in the country.
  12. Well, that changes things. It looks like four can be from below AA, but at least two of them have to be from A+. Surprised they sent both Gatewood and Erceg, as they are both 3B. I would have thought the Brewers would want to get Gatewood extra reps at 3B. Erceg will limit that.
  13. Yep, just turned 21 back in June. At 5'11" he doesn't have a ton of projection left, but the changeup is supposed to be major league level. If he has a plus change that tails in on RHH and a plus slider that sharp breaks away that can be devastating without putting a ton of stress on the arm.
  14. Which leads the Southern League. He also has a .840 OPS with RISP. Corey Ray's 145 Ks also lead the Southern League. Luis Aviles' 135 Ks is 3rd, Trent Clark's 133 is 4th, and Jake Gatewood's 132 is 5th. Four of the top 5 strikeout totals in the league, that's why they're .500 with this much talent.
  15. You're encroaching on Briggs/Scooter Gennett territory. Give it a rest and let it go, just like everyone else has. Nick Ramirez was the closer at Cal-State Fullerton, one of the most prominent college baseball programs in the country. He isn't someone trying pitching because he can't hit and has a good arm. He was a pitcher in college, and a darned good one.
  16. Amen to that. Really hoping that Webb is healthy now and can find what it was that made the Brewers draft him before Corbin Burnes. Really hoping that Ponce can develop a swing-and-miss pitch, as the low K totals are a bit concerning. Braden Webb's and Zack Brown's lines at low-A this year are eerily similar in terms of WHIP, BB/9, K/9; Brown has a slight advantage in HR/9, but Webb has an advantage in BAA-A. Erceg finishing strong; wasn't taking pitches earlier in the season, but in August has a 11/15 BB/K ratio. Corey Ray... his season can't end soon enough. I will be absolutely shocked if the Brewers send him to the AFL over Gatewood.
  17. Erceg now has the highest OPS on the season between he, Corey Ray, Trent Clark, and Isan Diaz.
  18. Yes, he was mentioned, as as I mentioned I don't know if he is eligible as one of the criteria is that they have to be off of the minor league DL 45 days before the end of the season. He was not activated at least 45 days before the end of the season. You are sort of correct on Lopez. Some players from those countries have played in the AFL; if they are not selected for those teams (or choose not to play) they are eligible. Yadiel Rivera played in the AFL, as did Rangers prospect Ronald Guzman. Lopez is on the reserve list for Mayaquez, but I thought he wasn't.
  19. No one has ever advocated Wren as a starting-caliber OF. Everyone who has been advocating for him, such as myself, has always framed him as a good 4th OF - he can play all three positions (including CF adequately) and has good OBP. This season his OBP is .370 and last season, split between AA and AAA, was .412 (.383 at AA, .425 at AAA), and in 2015 put up a .370 OBP at AA. Sure, he doesn't have the power of a Nieuwenhuis or a Hernan Perez, but he doesn't strike out like those guys do either. This, this, and this. Nick Franklin, Trevor Plouffe, Eric Sogard, Ehire Adrianza... the Riveras of the world are a dime a dozen, or could be purchased for a small amount of cash if needed.
  20. Bob Costas on the MLB Network broadcast just referred to social media as, "With notable exception, a combination of anger and ignorance." Unfortunately some of the organizations I'm a part of use Facebook to post all info on events, logistics, etc., so it's somewhat necessary for me. But one of the double-edge swords of Facebook is that they use machine learning to "learn" what you like and dislike. They tag the content of every picture and every post (yes, every picture - if the page loads slowly you will see text instead of the picture that says something like, "This picture may contain a dog, trees, etc.," and even do facial recognition on pictures). What you need to do is hide the posts that you don't like (upper right-hand corner of the post). When you hide posts that are tagged with political/religious/etc. content, they will machine-learn that you don't like that content and will move it further down your feed. I hide my friends political rants, and now I have to scroll pretty far down to see them.
  21. When have the Packers ever been pinched against the salary cap? Not in a decade. They've been carrying money over every year. I think there was more to Sitton's release than performance.
  22. Carolina with 19 hits and still in the 6th. Clark and Ray combine for only three though. Harrison on the other hand having quite the night, and Erceg continues to finish the season strong - June OPS .825, July OPS .718 (did hit 5 HRs in July), August OPS .802 with much better walk rate. There is a very valid reason to rank Harrison ahead of Clark and Ray on end of season lists. Erceg too.
  23. I just don't trust someone else managing Taylor Williams' workload - the Brewers can't control that in the AFL, so I don't think they risk it. You can't tell a team "only pitch him for one inning every 3-4 days".
  24. djoctagone, I'm pretty sure that Yadiel Rivera somewhere has incriminating pictures of David Stearns. Bandy, Phillips, one of Rivera/Dubon (unfortunately likely the former); Guerra, Woodruff, Jungmann, Wang, and Webb. Darkhorse: if Biloxi isn't in the playoffs, keep Jungman/Guerra in CS, DFA Brooks and call up Wilkerson.
