  1. Designated below-AA guy: J. Gatewood - wasn't in AA by August 1st so must use this exception, but if he had been in AA before 8/1 he's be a lock Outside chance it's M. Harrison or T. Stokes, and my understanding is that Bickford isn't eligible because he wasn't off of the minor league DL 45 days before the end of the season. If he is eligible, it's a coin flip between Gatewood and Bickford. Lock: J. Lopez - work on transition to reliever - ineligible, on Mayaguez PRWL reserve list Good bets: L. Ortiz - need to get his innings up, right now 7 fewer than last year, but they didn't send any top pitching prospects last year J. Perrin - has thrown far fewer innings than last year, make up for lost injury time QT-C - they like to send relievers, and he's a good one T. Taylor - late start to season due to injury, but do they want to hide him from scouts if they don't plan on protecting him in the Rule 5? B. Allemand - versatile roster-filler, can play just about anywhere One or both of D. Houle/T. Heineman - catchers are always needed, and they may want to hide Nottingham if they plan on not protecting him in the Rule 5 Not surprised if: T. Archer - (see QT-C) B. Derby - slightly behind innings from last year J. Nottingham - but again, do they want to risk him doing well if they don't plan on protecting him? J. Betancourt J. Davis - intriguing, but if they send an OF I think Taylor is a higher priority Too many innings this year - Burnes, Peralta, N. Ramirez (he'd be a lock if he had pitched last year, but I think this is too many innings for not having pitched in six years). They usually don't send guys coming off of major injury, Taylor Williams will likely go to the instructional league for more work. Houser is likely ineligible as he was not off of the minor league DL 45 days before the end of the season. Discuss.
  2. Yamamoto... dude just keeps on trucking. Cue the "poor-man's Gallardo" comparison. Would love a first-hand scouting report. Peralta with a short start, Ortiz and Williams out of the pen... I think it's just getting to the end of the season and perhaps the Brewers think that there is greater injury risk trying to go >5 innings than 3-4 at this point. And for Taylor Williams you chalk it up as a success, don't go more than an inning at this point, and continue to build arm strength over the winter.
  3. This year Moore has severe reverse splits: vs. LHB: 1.068 OPS-A vs. RHB: .753 OPS-A For his career he has slight reverse splits: vs. LHB: .756 vs. RHB: .722 And yet Counsell sits Thames and Walker. Does Counsell not have these stats available to him? How much time does it take to look this stuff up?
  4. [sarcasm]No one on this board ever overreacts to one inning...[/sarcasm]
  5. You can see Cobb - a guy who over the last three years has over 2700 receiving yards and 22 TDs and in three playoff games last year racked up 260 receiving yards and 3 TDs - being cut for a UDFA who was cut by the Raiders last year after training camp, or a guy who was a 7th round draft pick.
  6. How many guys fitting Wilkerson's profile (under 30, very good minor league numbers as a starting pitcher, K/9 > 9.0, low walk totals) have even been exposed to the Rule 5 draft? If they aren't even exposed in the first place they can't be drafted. What % of guys fitting Wilkerson's profile have been protected, and of those who haven't, what % of those have been picked? That's the question.
  7. Small sample, but Tyrone Taylor is having a pretty good season and still is only 23 years old. He's back in the conversation. If it's between him and Nottingham for the last spot, it's a lot easier for another team to stash a backup OF than a backup C. Tough call there.
  8. Not sure how he did it, but Jungmann walked 5 and struck out 8 in six innings while throwing under 100 pitches.
  9. I think you nailed it - Burnes as Pitcher of the Year, but Wilkerson is in the conversation as he did it a whole season at AA where Burnes was there only part of the season. Brinson's injury likely gives Phillips time to rack up more extra base hits to win it.
  10. But by not doing so they burn an option, correct?
  11. Helena with a 10-spot in the 2nd. As bad as their pitching has been though I'm not 100% confident they can hold that. Youth being served though - McClanahan and Henry a combined 5-5 with two walks, three doubles (Henry) and a triple (McClanahan). Mobile with 2 hits through 12, Biloxi with 11 hits, and Mobile has the lead 1-0 courtesy of three errors in the top of the 12th by Biloxi.
  12. Great things happen to great people.
  13. Agreed, which is why I think a deal where Detroit sends some cash to get some "name" prospects makes the most sense for both sides. Detroit sends Verlander and cash (name your amount), to the Brewers and the Brewers send Corey Ray (I personally think Phillips, Clark, and Harrison are better prospects than Ray), Taylor Jungmann, and Gilbert Lara to Detroit. Then Detroit can sell it to their (casual) fans that they got last year's #5 overall pick, another former #1 pick, and another guy who was a top international free agent a couple of years ago. (Jungmann can be a PTBNL without being exposed to waivers as long as he doesn't get called up the rest of the season). Brewers don't give up much, Detroit gets "names" back. Both sides win.
  14. Yep. We just can't accept that both Thames and Aguilar have their warts but also are good ball players that have their streaks. Thames is OPS'ing mid .800's during his last month of play but yeah, let's just put him to the pasture. [sarcasm]Remember, only Broxton is streaky, no one else in baseball is.[/sarcasm] Whole lot of recency bias going on in this thread (and most IGTs).
  15. Wow, what a great day in the minors. Great pitching performances from Derby, Perrin, Webb (been waiting for him to come around, the Brewers drafted him before Burnes), and Houser's rehab is progressing. Like Taylor Williams, there's a reason the Brewers have kept Houser on the 40-man roster. The talent is there. Offensively, Jean Carmona played SS (Coca moved to 2B), Zach Clark has been hot and seems to be adjusting to A-ball pitching, Gatewood seems to be adjusting to AA, and to cap it off Orf's cycle and Phillips' two dinger night.
  16. Garcia's career minor league OPS is .645, Susac's career minor league OPS is .769. Why would they let go of Susac and keep Garcia?
  17. 1) How are the Brewers supposed to know if Brinson and Phillips will develop into solid ML players if they are sitting behind Broxton, Braun, and Santana? B) Pretty much all major league players are streaky, except for the very elite and the... other end of the spectrum. Everyone else, their numbers are the end of the season numbers and are generally who they are. If Broxton finishes w/an OPS of .800, that's likely who he is (because it's pretty much who he was last year).
  18. Ventura - one hit through six, a HR Pennington - one hit through five, a HR Medeiros - one hit (so far) through four, a 3B Who the heck are these I-Cubs pitchers who have stymied the Sky Sox the last three days?
  19. Santander is an OF (I know, because I mocked him to MIL in the Lucroy-Cleveland trade forum thread). Big difference between a pitcher with arm surgery and an OF with arm surgery.
  20. September 23rd is my favorite baseball day of the year
  21. Given how poor starting pitching has been, I'd think that Wilkerson would be one of the first 5-7 picks. There may not be room for him here, but there is room for starting pitching under the age of 30 somewhere. Cincinnati, Oakland, Detroit, Minnesota, San Diego, Baltimore, Toronto, Giants, Phillies... one of those teams is grabbing him. For reference: Wilkerson is 3rd in the Southern League in strikeouts. He's started one fewer game than Mike Soroka, pitched six fewer innings, and has 23 more strikeouts than Soroka. Wilkerson has started two fewer games than Kolby Allard, pitched one more inning, and struck out 30 more than Allard. You can acquire that for free and pay league minimum salary for three years and have six years of control - someone is taking a flyer on that, although I think it's likely the Brewers deal him prior to Rule 5. Lock: Dubon, Peralta, Diplan, Wilkerson Probably: Nottingham If room: Orf, Archer, Uhen Coming off of injury, I don't think anyone is taking a flyer on Devin Williams, but I understand the sentiment.
  22. Herrera with a short outing and not many pitches thrown (31). Hopefully he's ok.
  23. Cobb was hurt at the end of the regular season, thus the dropoff in play, but he was outstanding in the playoffs. He single-handedly won the game against the Giants. Several analysts have said he is one of the more underrated players in the league. Janis... the poor route-running was his first two seasons in the league. He didn't play much last year because the WRs were for the most part healthy, but they specifically designed the end-around play for him. He's ahead of Davis on the depth chart - Davis was inactive for five games, mostly at the end of the season, whereas Janis played in all 16. And he's one of the best special teams players in the league; your 5th WR has to play special teams. The Packers have so many weapons you can't judge their performance by targets or yards. Rodgers threw for 4400+ yards but only two players w/over 900 yards receiving - just not enough balls to go around. I don't understand TT's infatuation with WRs. The Packers system is hard to learn so they like to bring in guys a year earlier than they need them, and hopefully they will be able to keep the guys who don't make the team on the PS. Barring injuries they keep six: Nelson, Adams, Cobb, Allison, Janis, and one of Davis/Yancey/Dupre, but start with five because of Allison's suspension.
  24. And there's your first no-hitter of the season, a 7-inning, 4-pitcher gem via Burgos/Snow/Ramirez/Lopez! Not the sexiest no-hitter, but it was against the Cubs!!!
  25. Maybe I was right in putting Ponce ahead of Ray after all. Ponce back to his earlier season form tonight, Ray... had a tough night. Working on driving the ball the opposite way or whatever he is working on doesn't matter when you can't hit the ball. Biloxi's game 2 is getting interesting...
