  1. This is Nick's second-straight Southern League All-Star selection. The Anaheim, CA native was also a Florida State League All-Star in 2013 with Brevard County. For the most part, we don't think much of Nick Ramirez, and probably rightfully so. But if he has been an All-Star the last three years... what does that say about the state of 1B prospects in those leagues? And can Michael Reed play 2B or 3B? (In case you can't tell by your screen, that font is half blue. Seriously, they need to find a place for him and his OBP.)
  2. Red-haired men who call themselves a "Ginger". No, you are not a "Ginger" - a "Ginger" is a red-haired female. It comes from the character "Ginger" on Gilligan's Island. (This offense is typically committed by a "Millennial" or "Generation Z", who have no idea what Gilligan's Island is.)
  3. There could be a lot of demand for Parra, pushing up his trade value. Looking at the contending teams that have issues in the OF: NYY - Beltran is 38 w/ a .668 OPS, .279 OBP, and at 38 is a defensive liability; Young hits HRs but that's it, .274 OBP; Heathcott is on the DL but was up by default (sub .700 OPS in AAA) TOR - Pillar has .637 OPS, .280 OBP; Pompey is struggling after the callup KCR - Orlando, Dyson, and Rios are all struggling with OPS <.660 and OBP <.300 MIN - Escobar, Hicks, Robinson, and Schafer all struggling, has been merry-go-round in the OF; Hunter is 39 TEX - Hamilton is back on the DL, Martin and Rosales have OPS <.660 LAA - Joyce's and Cowgill's OPS <.600 WAS - Werth is on the DL, has been struggling (OPS < .600), and is a defensive liability; Taylor has hit some big HRs but his OBP is .281 and has a 5:1 K:BB ratio NYM - their bench has been putrid ATL - Gomes has been struggling (.617 OPS) and is a defensive liability, Young has been awful STL - Holliday just tore his quad and is a defensive liability anyway; Jay has been awful (.567 OPS) CHC - Lake and Sczur have struggled off the bench That's a lot of teams that could be in use of an upgrade in the OF, be it a starter or 4th OF/defensive replacement, and there aren't many guys like Parra on the market who can play all OF positions. Get some of those division rivals bidding each other up for Parra and the return could be quite nice.
  4. You never know... they might do something stupid and get kicked out of college before mid-August. Or look at Mac Marshall; he decided to go the juco route and was eligible for the draft again this year. Builds a relationship with the player. I wonder what would happen if a player quit/dropped out of a 4-year school? I'm assuming he would go into the next draft, but at what point would he be a free agent? I would rather they took flyers on a bunch of LHH 3B & C from jucos and small schools (or tried to find the next Fiers) to see if they can catch lightning in a bottle.
  5. Microsoft, why do you feel the need to release 20 updates totaling 200MB all at the same time? My computer has been downloading and installing updates for two hours. I have a separate issue where you say that the email address that I've had for 15 years no longer exists, but your support website and chat has been down for 2.5 hours, I assume because people are having issues with the update. Can you release the updates in stages? Divide that up into 3 separate updates released over 1.5 days?
  6. You can bet that Allemand is on his way to Appleton to take the spot of Gatewood, who is on his way to Helena. Hopefully Gatewood learned a few things in his struggles and takes those things to Helena to work on.
  7. My concern with Scooter is the same as it has always been - he's been hitting good, but not batting good. The difference is that he has a .307 BA but only a .340 OBP; only 5 BB in 93 PAs. If it's 6'6" Corey Hart with a huge strike zone I can understand that, but Scooter is (generously) listed at 5'10"; dude has a small strike zone and he doesn't take walks. I don't understand rewarding him with a callup for continuing to not take pitches. In the "don't look now" department, over his last six outings covering 9.2 innings Ariel Pena has given up one earned run, five hits, struck out 14, and walked none. If you extend it to his last ten appearances, it's 16.1 innings, one earned run, eight hits, walked four, struck out 18.
  8. Some senior signs that I like: Chris Keck, 3B, UCLA - 6'2" LHH 3B, put up good OBP (.393 OBP, 33 BB in 255 PAs) with a little power (7 HRs); listed at 188 lbs, may develop more power if he can fill out Cody Jones, CF, TCU - smaller but speedy switch-hitter, .377 BA and .478 OBP, 36 BB and 26-31 SBs in 250 PAs Drew Turbin, 2B, Dallas Baptist - picture Scooter Gennett with plate discipline; .484 OBP this past year on top of a .353 BA Cory Taylor, RHP, Dallas Baptist - a junior, but throws 93/94 with a low effort delivery; had a better sophomore year, but the Brewers likely are aware of him having drafted Cy Sneed last year. Didn't see him on the BA Top 200 list. Ryan Krill, 1B, Michigan State - big LHH 1B, second in Big Ten in HR and SLG and 4th in BA David Kerian, 1B/OF, Illinois - led Big Ten in HRs, SLG, OBP, and BA; switch-hitter who is athletic enough to play corner OF Reid Roper, 2B, Illinois - LHH 2B with some power and plate discipline - 40 BB and 10 HRs in 257 PAs Rob McDonnell, LHP, Illinois - 6'2" LH starter, overshadowed by his teammates but had a great year on his own, in 74 innings gave up 56 hits and struck out 70; walks a little high at 29, but only gave up 1 HR Tyler Peitzmeyer, LHP, CSU-Fullerton - lefty closer for the Titans, at 6'2", 210, may be worth trying as a starter Kyle Friedrichs, RHP, CSU-Long Beach - not the biggest guy (6'1", 190), but in 100 IP gave up 90 hits, struck out 109, and walked only 12
  9. Smith's suspension ends after the game Wednesday, so there will be no need for roster juggling after that. Barring disastrous starts and/or extra-inning games that gas the bullpen, there will be at most two more moves - sending Jungmann down after Tuesday's game (calling up reliever/OF), and calling up whomever will be the 5th starter for Sunday's game (sending down reliever/OF/IF).
  10. Fun fact, last year's 5th round pick DeMuth had the second smallest 5th round signing bonus of any pick ($50K; CLE gave their pick $20K). So we can probably estimate that Allemand will get somewhere around $50K.
  11. A small guy, but he had a .430 OBP this past season with more walks (38) than K's (21) and some pop with 7 HRs. Not exactly a defensive whiz though (18 errors).
  12. Just came here to post about Dominguez. He was DFA'd; maybe a "change of scenery" (i.e. crap-for-crap) trade for Jed Bradley?
  13. I think what we can deduce from this draft is that it's BPA. The Brewers may have liked Betts, but perhaps Kirby was higher on their board. If they had Kirby at #26 and Betts at #28, then they went BPA. If we go by BA rankings, they had Clark at #10, Kirby at #26, and Ponce at #36. Some good value there. Maybe the Brewers will get lucky and Kyle Cody will be there at #90. I'm hoping for the next Lucroy being drafted in the 3rd round (Austin Rei, Austin Allen). Trey Cabbage would be nice too.
  14. With three HS players, will they be able to sign all of them? Might be seeing a lot of senior signs in rounds 5-10 for them.
  15. Good idea, and with him being LH I really like it, but with the Indians being six back I don't know that they are in "go for it" mode. They would have to go on a hot streak and make up some ground first. I think it would have to be part of a 3-way deal, with the Brewers sending a veteran to someone, that team sends a young-ish player to CLE (CF? Not sure what their needs and upper-level prospect situations are). I'd like to think that the Brewers could get more than Chisenhall for K-Rod, but maybe that's not reality. That being said, the core of the Indians (Kluber, Bauer, Salazar, Santana, Kipnis, Brantley, etc.) are still in their 20's, so maybe they are in go-for-it mode. Someone who might be very appealing to them is Gomez; Bourn isn't doing them any favors in CF, and with Gomez under contract for another 1.5 years that may be very appealing. If they do make a run, a 5th starter, particularly one who is under contract for a couple more years while their core is in their prime, might be very valuable to them as well.
  16. Yes, however it would put the Brewers in a position where they almost have to take a college player with that pick next year because a HS player, unless he has bad grades or comes from a poor family, would know he would have the leverage in that negotiation. That, or the Brewers would have to overdraft a HS guy who was more of a late 1st round (or later) talent who would be happy with mid-first round money.
  17. Can he play CF? Not a fan if he only profiles as a corner OF.
  18. Because the original post was a blanket statement claiming/suggesting that all college pitchers are abused and never work out, thus HS pitchers are better. I was never stating that college pitchers, as a blanket statement, are better; I was stating that not all college pitchers are abused and thus flame out. Some college pitchers, like Sheets, do very well. It's about the context of the original post, not what you infer from my response.
  19. Ben Sheets worked out a lot better than J.M. Gold, Mike Jones, Mark Rogers, and Jeremy Jeffress. Why do you continually ignore draft position? We aren't drafting in the top 10 where the best college pitchers typically go. Last year was a year to grab an impact college pitcher after the top 10 spots, this isn't one of those years. Regardless the Brewers haven't hit many HRs with college pitchers in the first round either. 1) Because I was responding to a post that mentioned nothing about draft position. B) Because, with the exception of Rogers, I picked players that were picked around where the Brewers are picking this year (Gold - #13, Sheets - #10, Jones - #12, Jeffress - #16). Rogers, being a #5 overall pick and a HS pitcher, also helps prove my point. Not sure how that ignores draft position. 3) Because prior to 2010, when draft pick protection was implemented for players who didn't sign, many HS pitchers were drafted later than they should have been because of signability. Thus many college pitchers would have been drafted later than they actually were if the rules of today's draft were in place. 4) Because the original post mentioned nothing about comparing different draft years.
  20. Ben Sheets worked out a lot better than J.M. Gold, Mike Jones, Mark Rogers, and Jeremy Jeffress.
  21. I'm not sure what to think of Happ. I understand why some people like him, and I like the fact that he's a switch hitter and had a very good OBP this year (.492), walking 49 times in 250 PAs. He also struck out 49 times; not terrible, but it's not good to strike out once every five PA's in college. On top of that, I'm not real big on drafting corner OFs that high unless they are head/shoulders above anyone at a premium position. You can move guys to corner OF (Braun, Coulter) who don't make it at more premium positions. I don't know that he's head and shoulders above some of the pitchers or catchers that are projected to be there at #15.
  22. They need to juggle the roster and call up a 5th starter only when needed until Smith's suspension is over. Then they can bring up a semi-permanent 25th man/5th starter who will remain with the team until Peralta returns. With the rule being that a guy has to spend 10 days in the minors after being sent down, that would be the reason they aren't recalling Thornburg - after Tuesday's game they will send that starter back down, thus that player won't be eligible to return when Smith's suspension is up. By calling up Jungmann (can't recall Cravy, hasn't been 10 days yet) it leaves the possibility to call up Thornburg after Smith's suspension is up. It's roster management due to a 24-man limit right now; there may be something to the audition/"give them a look since we may be trading Lohse and Garza", but other than that, nothing more, nothing less than roster management.
  23. Terry has done nothing but pitch great since joining the organization. The Brewers went to Lee university to scout Andy Hillis, and stumbled upon Clint Terry. Hillis washed out due to arm trouble, but Terry has been solid all three seasons. Not spectacular, but solid. Reminds me a bit of how the Mets stumbled upon deGrom. deGrom was a SS in college (and he was invited to a summer league, but declined when he found out they wanted him to pitch - go figure), but the coach either talked him into trying pitching or said you're on scholarship, you do what I tell you to, and he moved into the bullpen. About 2/3rds into the season they moved him into the rotation. The Mets were scouting Chris Sale who was pitching against deGrom, and that's how deGrom got noticed. But if you weren't scouting Sale that day you might not have been aware of deGrom, as deGrom only started 12 games his entire college career.
  24. Peterson was one of three players - two former first-round picks (Brett Wallace, Clayton Mortensen) and Peterson a 2nd round pick - the Cardinals sent to the A's for Matt Holliday. Prospects don't always pan out. Wallace, pre-2010, was BA's 27th ranked prospect.
  25. I don't think it is Ramirez physically dogging it as it is mentally dogging it. Swinging at lots of first pitches; yes he saw 19 in 4 ABs today, but the other day he saw 12 pitches in 5 ABs when Braun and Lind combined for six hits in front of him. .265 OBP - that's not physically dogging it, that's mentally dogging it and not having the mental discipline to wait for a good pitch to hit. And when you have a slow guy at the plate, why not hit and run to try to get the lead runner out of the double play?
