  1. Shane Peterson not in the lineup tonight. Already on his way to STL? Edit: With an early game tomorrow in STL, he would have to be. No direct flight from Colorado Springs to St. Louis, would be hard to fly in the morning, connect somewhere (prolly Denver), move up a time zone and get to the ballpark early for BP, meet the team, etc.
  2. So Molina can golf one literally out of the dirt for an infield hit, but Rogers smokes one up the middle, hits the mound, and bounces right to the 2B. I'm getting really tired of seeing these bloop hits and weak grounders for opponents find holes, but hard hit balls for the Brewers go straight to fielders for the other team. That being said, there haven't been many hard-hit balls by the Brewers tonight.
  3. I have a feeling that in two weeks Gatewood will be in Helena and Neuhaus will be playing SS (barring a 1st/2nd round draft pick of a college SS). Hopefully today is the start of Coulter getting back on track. And did Gainey pick up a few MPH moving to the pen? Small sample, but pretty impressive so far.
  4. Positive signs: 1) Garza - 5 IP, 3 H, 2 BB (were both intentional or just one?), only 1 K but only 54 pitches in 5 innings. Yes, AZ was prolly a bit tired, but Garza also wasn't expecting to pitch. I noticed that he pitched out of the stretch and not the windup, even when no one was on base. He also seemed to be the only Brewers pitcher throwing inside fastballs. 2) I believe all four of Segura's hits were to RF (one was to CF, but it was right of 2B) 3) Cotts - 2 IP, 0 H, 3 K, was hitting 92/93; he's been on a nice run - his last four outings combined 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K; if he can keep that up for another 6 weeks, there's always a market at the trading deadline for LH bullpen help
  5. Kevin Correia declared free agency from the Giants AAA team. Was pitching pretty well for them. Might be worth a shot to see if he has anything left in the tank. If he can return to his 2013 form they might be able to flip him for a low-level prospect.
  6. Tyler Cravy is scheduled to pitch tomorrow. Do they send down Goforth and bring up Cravy? Blazek hasn't pitched (yet) today, so I'm guessing he's the piggy-back if Cravy (or whomever) short-starts. With Smith due to be suspended tomorrow (he said he's appealing the length, not being suspended, so I'm assuming he will be suspended) I think you have to call up a starter because they will be short one pitcher. They have a spot on the 40-man. That or they claim Eric Stultz.
  7. Another college catching prospect that should be available in rounds 7-13 is Kevin Martir of Maryland. Catcher's build (5'11", 215), he hit .327 with a .425 OBP (29 BB and 10 HBP in ~265 PAs). Only four errors on the year, a .992 fielding %.
  8. Since the other thread is/was more intended for first round picks, I'll put this here. These are some 5th-10th round guys, almost all senior signs, that could be more than just someone to help allocate bonus pool money towards tough signs (all are seniors unless noted): Chris Keck, 3B, UCLA - 6'2" LHH 3B, put up good OBP (.393 OBP, 33 BB in 255 PAs) with a little power (7 HRs); listed at 188 lbs, may develop more power if he can fill out Cody Jones, CF, TCU - smaller but speedy switch-hitter, .377 BA and .478 OBP, 36 BB and 26-31 SBs in 250 PAs Drew Turbin, 2B, Dallas Baptist - picture Scooter Gennett with plate discipline; .484 OBP this past year on top of a .353 BA Cory Taylor, RHP, Dallas Baptist - a junior, but throws 93/94 with a low effort delivery; had a better sophomore year, but the Brewers likely are aware of him having drafted Cy Sneed last year. Didn't see him on the BA Top 200 list. Chance Adams, RHP, Dallas Baptist - also a junior and a juco transfer, was a long reliever who in 54 IP gave up 37 hits, struck out 77, and walked 12; not ideal height for a starter (6'0") but I could see the Brewers trying him as one Ryan Krill, 1B, Michigan State - big LHH 1B, second in Big Ten in HR and SLG and 4th in BA David Kerian, 1B/OF, Illinois - led Big Ten in HRs, SLG, OBP, and BA; switch-hitter who is athletic enough to play corner OF Reid Roper, 2B, Illinois - LHH 2B with some power and plate discipline - 40 BB and 10 HRs in 257 PAs Rob McDonnell, LHP, Illinois - 6'2" LH starter, overshadowed by his teammates but had a great year on his own, in 74 innings gave up 56 hits and struck out 70; walks a little high at 29, but only gave up 1 HR Tyler Peitzmeyer, LHP, CSU-Fullerton - lefty closer for the Titans, at 6'2", 210, may be worth trying as a starter Kyle Friedrichs, RHP, CSU-Long Beach - not the biggest guy (6'1", 190), but in 100 IP gave up 90 hits, struck out 109, and walked only 12 And though he's a junior, if Thomas Eshelman is still there in the 5th round, maybe even fourth, sign me up. In 123 IP this year he gave up 93 hits, walked six (yes, six), and struck out 125. Yes, a 21:1 BB to K ratio. BA has him at #171.
  9. Can't imagine how disappointed Guez is right now. With Davis scheduled for knee surgery, (hopefully) a trade of Parra on the horizon, and Schafer not getting the job done the door was open to finally make the big leagues.
  10. Davis was basically ML-average OPS among LFs who were close to qualified (>125 PAs). Among those 25, he was 8th in OBP and 10th in SLG (an odd statistical anomaly had him 14th in OPS, but he was within .010 of 10th). Not a terrible season by any stretch of the imagination.
  11. Why the hell not? Just call someone up if Parra is traded. Sucks for Davis but has no impact on whether or not we'll trade Parra. 'zactly. Peterson, Reed, Schafer, Clark, Guez, hell give Gennett a try in LF. Got nothing to lose at this point.
  12. I don't know if Lohse throws a slider or a curve, but whatever it is it doesn't move much vertically or horizontally. He needs to figure that out. If Maldy doesn't give up that passed ball I wonder if he throws a different pitch/takes a different approach. And if first base is open, why not walk him? I thought Goforth had a 96+mph fastball. I haven't seen him break 93. Am I misremembering? I think Ramirez is starting to mail it in. Yesterday in five ABs he saw 12 pitches (with Braun and Lind combining for six hits in front of him). Today he saw 15 pitches in 4 ABs. Hard to tell but I think the grounder took a bad hop on him so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but he doesn't look like he's putting in 100%.
  13. The Astros have used nine starting pitchers so far this season. Feldman just hit the DL (and wasn't that great before hitting the DL), where he joins Oberholtzer, Peacock, and Deduno, none of whom should be considered even #3 starters. McCullers has been called up and pitching well, but after throwing 97 heavy innings last year it's unlikely they let him go much more than 140 this year and will/should probably shut him down in August. They are also struggling at 3B, starting journeyman Luis Valbuena who had a semi-breakout year in Chicago last year but appears to be returning to career norms this year. Carter and Gattis have struggled with OBP, and Lind might make for a good complementary LH platoon partner at 1B and DH. The Astros have discussed Harang and will consider Cueto, but apparently Hamels comes with too much contract. For a team in first place they seem to have a lot of holes. Demand at positions the Brewers are/could be looking to sell is starting to pick up, and that's good. With the Astros and Angels both struggling at 1B/DH, a nice bidding war between the two division rivals for Lind could really inflate the return for him.
  14. Obviously Austin Ross' 2015 is a small sample so far, but does anyone know if he picked up a few MPH moving to the bullpen or if he learned a new pitch (cutter, etc.)? 38 K's in 27 innings at AA is good even if he is old for the league. Ross, Strong, Chapman, Magnifico. A little old for AA, but potentially some cheap bullpen arms to carry the Brewers through the next few down years.
  15. 5th round senior sign - Chris Keck, 3b, UCLA; David Berg, RHP, UCLA; Kyle Friedrichs, RHP, CSU-Long Beach
  16. By low arm slot, would you say that Bumgarner and Sale have a low arm slot or are you referring to something different?
  17. I was going to say that Adams will be back next year, but Lind only has a $500K buyout. Trade him to the Cards, have the Cards buy him out, sign him as a free agent again in the offseason and trade him again next season for another prospect. Seems to work with K-Rod. In all seriousness, with Adams only being 26 and hitting his first year of Arby's it does diminish Lind's value a bit as they would only be looking at a one-year rental. But with Hayward sucking wind (wasn't he supposed to be all-world by now?), Jay sucking wind and on the DL, and Holliday a defensive liability, maybe Parra has value to them too. Lind + Parra would certainly get one of those two plus another lower-level prospect.
  18. Is Vandy's Rhett Wiseman a 3rd round substitute for Happ? Happ had a little better numbers, but it could be argued that Wiseman played in a tougher conference against better pitching. Speaking of the 3rd round, if Austin Allen is good enough to stick behind the plate, I wouldn't mind his LH bat in the system.
  19. Stultz is 35 and did nothing in his career until landing in the very pitcher-friendly Petco Park. He was a throw-in in the deal, and isn't going to impact the decision to acquire starting pitching. The fact that the Brewers hung 7 on Stultz in less than four innings at Atlanta should tell you all you need to know about Stultz. If Lohse had pitched in SD the last two years instead of Miller Park his numbers would have looked a lot better than Stultz's. UPDATE: Stultz DFA'd by Dodgers. Included simply as salary evener. No additional leverage for Dodgers.
  20. I'm curious about Haren. The last two years his ERA has been higher than Lohse, especially considering last year he was pitching in a very pitcher-friendly park (LA) while Lohse has been pitching in a very hitter-friendly park (and in a very good division). He's off to a better start than Lohse, but it's only 9 starts (I don't know if Miami is a hitter's park, pitcher's park, or neutral). It's reasonable to expect Lohse to start to decline a little, but why would a 36-year-old Lohse be expected to regress but a 34-year-old Haren expected to improve? The bigger sample says Lohse has been the better pitcher; Haren might just be a bigger name on a hotter streak. Now that being said, Haren is a threat to go back to LA, and he's probably trying to broker a deal himself (considering he threatened to retire when he was traded to the Marlins). The Marlins got some cash to pay for Haren's contract, but are they going to give that cash to whomever they trade him to? I don't know that Haren has the clubhouse presence that Lohse has either to offer a young team without much veteran leadership. Cueto with a MRI on his elbow today. Might be crossing him off the list. And I don't know that the White Sox are going to dump Samardzija after trading for him in the offseason. Someone will definitely give up a draft pick to sign him, so I don't know that the White Sox aren't going to try to extend him with the draft pick compensation as the return if they can't. Wouldn't say 100% that he's available.
  21. I think the Cubs have been asking that same question about Fiers when he pitches against them.
  22. As has been discussed extensively here, Fernandez told teams he would only sign with Florida teams (Marlins, Rays) or he was going to the U (Miami). DM said they looked at Bumgarner extensively but they thought his delivery/mechanics would lead to injury. After watching Jones, Rogers, Neugebauer, and Gold go down during his tenure, I don't blame Melvin for being cautious about mechanics and injuries with HS pitchers. Let's stick to discussing our own perspective (unless it is correcting misinformation) and not attack other's perspectives. I think that is the spirit of what splitterpfj intended with this thread.
