  1. The WIAA has voted against NIL for high school athletes. Probably not coincidental that an above-average number of WI HS BB players are going to out-of-state private schools (read: basketball acadamies). Not saying what the WIAA did was wrong - I applaud them for making that decision. But the WI ties for these kids, and the ability to recruit and build relationships with them, will deteriorate.
  2. I was hoping that, but ESPN has it wrong - Kolek was picked by the Knicks who traded for that pick from Portland and I don't know what the heck ESPN is thinking with Ighodaro as he was picked by the Suns after they traded with the Knicks for this pick, and the Knicks acquired the pick from OKC. I have no idea why they have the Trail Blazers' logo by his pick.
  3. Probably more of a case of Cooper Pratt, Juan Baez, Daniel Guilarte, and Filippo Di Turi being at Carolina. More innings available in the ACL.
  4. Depends on who you consider to be a "front of the rotation" starter. I think there is one possibility: Max Scherzer If the Rangers sell (they are currently 7 wins behind the last wild card spot) and if the Rangers will kick in some cash, Scherzer could be exactly what they need - a "front of the rotation" starter who, because of how much his salary is, won't command much return in prospect capital. He's also not signed beyond this season, which isn't the Brewers typical M.O., but that's also why the Brewers could target him - they're not on the hook for a big salary next year. All he would really cost the Brewers is some cash, which could be made up with a deep playoff run. Front-of-the-rotation talent, won't have to give up a lot of prospect capital, not on the hook for a big salary in 2025 sounds like exactly what the Brewers might be looking for.
  5. On this day 11 years ago they drafted a 6'9", 190lb 18-year-old project. The following season the best player in the draft and another future MVP went #41 overall. Bucks had #2 and #31.
  6. As of June 24th: Contreras leads all NL catchers (+400K votes over #2) Yelich is #2 among NL OF (+115K votes over #4) Looks like those two are probably voted in. After that, based on fWAR: Turang is #2 at 2B (no real challengers, good chance) Ortiz is #2 at 3B (McMahon is #3 and might be COL's only selection, so outside chance for Ortiz) Hudson is #3 among NL relievers w/at least 20 IP Megill is #6 among NL relievers w/at least 20 IP (also 6th in saves; Diaz has one more save but an ugly ERA and BB/9, so probably Megill before him) Given how many SP's opt out of the game, decent chance that both Hudson and Megill get in (both have a pretty ERA in addition to fWAR rank). Have a realistic chance of five representatives.

  7. We don't know that yet. The trade deadline isn't over. If you look back in history, very few big trades are made before the All-Star break. Even fewer now, because with the expanded playoffs a lot more teams are in contention. There's not a lot of sellers right now. Economics, low supply raises prices. Here's an analogy - you're going to have twins and you know you'll probably need to buy a house. But it's not peak selling season yet, few homes are on the market and thus there are few that you like and they're asking over market for them. But you know that if you wait a month, there will be more for sale and you're more likely to get what you want and for, say, $100K less. Logic says to rent for another month, right? Let's hold off and see what happens. It worked today - you don't need to win 11-1, you just need to score one more run than the other team. And they did just that.
  8. I think there's an underlying method to the madness here. The Brewers currently have four good pitchers on the 60-day IL that are likely to/hopefully come back during the season - Ross, Williams, Hall, Bukaskas. When those guys come off of the 60-day IL, somebody is going to have to be DFA'd. There is a point where you call up too many prospects due to guys going on the 60-day IL, because at some point you have to take guys off of the 40-man roster when those players come back. Easy to DFA guys such as Keuchel, Hernandez, Meeker, White, etc., because if they get claimed you aren't going to lose much if anything from your organization. But when those guys start coming back from the 60-day IL and you have to DFA guys you traded assets for (Taylor Clarke, Chad Patrick) or potentially a prospect (Carlos Rodriguez) who could easily get claimed due to a roster crunch, that's not good either. I just don't think they can add to the 40-man anyone else who is valuable to the org because at some point they will have to DFA someone valuable when Williams, Ross, Hall, and (possibly) Bukaskas come back.
  9. Please specify who you are talking about.
  10. Debate electric vehicles, but two things that should be required to be electric are lawnmowers and leaf blowers.
  11. As expected, Fisker filed for Chapter 11. I really hope that a bigger automaker buys the rights to the Ocean because it is a really great vehicle, period, not just EV. Too many ICE automakers trying to build EVs as extensions of current vehicle lines who don't know what they're doing (I'm looking at you, Lexus - 200 mile range for the 450RZ???).
  12. No different that a waiver claim, really. Not many teams selling right now and teams are surely asking for an arm and a leg and another arm for anyone. Will be different in a month. The AL is starting to shake out. Five teams at least seven wins out of the wild card, six teams at least six wins out, seven teams five wins out. Just need to keep the ship afloat for another month (of which, five days are off for the All-Star break).
  13. Yep. 2021 they were #16 overall on 24/7. 2020 they were #27. 2019 #29. The 2019 class included Graham Mertz and Logan Brown. It also included Joe Tippman, Leo Chenal, and Keanu Benton. 2020 included Nick Herbig and Tanor Bortolini. A few others still have a chance (Jack Nelson, Aaron Witt, James Thompson Jr.).
  14. That's fair. The point sveumrules and I are making is that an OPS of .800 (of which he currently sits at .793) this season means a lot more than it has in the past.
  15. Bingo! Especially now that he's working the top and bottom of the zone instead of the sides.
  16. There has been talk of the Iowa coaches messing with his mechanics and pitch selection that caused him to get off to a slow start, but that improved as the year went on: https://www.mlb.com/prospects/draft/brody-brecht-701679 He led NCAA Division I with a .143 opponent average in 2023 before getting off to a slow start this spring as scouts complained about how Iowa has messed with his pitches and mechanics. He made some adjustments on his own and finished strong, which should allow him to become the program's first first-rounder since Tim Costo in 1990. If you're not picking at the top of the draft, those are the guys you have to find - the ones who weren't great because of bad coaching.
  17. Among the 59 players with at least 100 PAs in LF, Winker's 129 wRC+ ranks 12th. There is exactly one LF with an OPS >.900, three at .900 if you round up, and that person has a .390 BA. Eight have an OPS >.850. Offense at LF, league-wide, isn't as prolific as you think.
  18. Pretty rare that happens this early in the season, especially now with so many teams in contention for a wild card spot. Teams are asking for an arm and a leg and another arm this early. That being said, it would have been nice if Tyler Anderson would have left Anaheim with them.
  19. Anyone else getting some Bryce Turang vibes from Wyatt Sanford?
  20. You always have to take bats from Tennessee with a big grain of salt given the short fences there. I wouldn't at all mind Cozart at #34 if he's there. But with Quero's development set back a year and likely having to repeat AAA, do you draft a college catcher that high who could be in the majors in 3 years?
  21. Reminder that Zack Wheeler missed his entire age 25 and 26 seasons with injury and in his age 27 season had a 5.21 ERA, walked 4.2/9, and missed the last 1/3rd of that season with injury. Let's not give up too soon.
  22. Who does Myers' delivery remind you of?
  23. Problem is that this is a weak draft. I'd support it if they could do it, but the value of that 1st round pick isn't as much as it typically is. If they can't, and they came out of it with Scheierman or Tyler Kolek or DaRon Holmes at #23 and Boo Buie or Cam Christie or Pacome Dadiet at #33 I'd be happy. I know that Boo Buie wasn't invited to the combine and isn't on anybody's mock, but I think he can be a really solid player in the league. Made 43% of his 3's, 5 assists and 1.4 steals to 2.2 TOV last year. And the more I look into DaRon Holmes, the more I like him. 6'10", 236, started picking up a 3-point shot last year and made 32 of 83 (39%).
  24. Hopefully O'Rae connects with Turang about what Turang did in the offseason to add ~25 lbs. Can definitely tell that Turang has a lot more muscle in his lower half than last year.
