  1. You have to figure Nathan is the next to go because they have a guy in Neshek who they think could be a closer. I wonder what it would cost to get him now in a trade. Obviously, we probably wont be going after him with Gagne in the fold, but I think some team (hopefully not the Cubs) is going to get a top notch closer.
  2. Yeah, i just dont think this is that great of a deal for the Twins. How does the package they got compare to the one the A's got for Haren?
  3. The talk is that this will mean Roberts is coming to Chicago, but Bedard would have been way worse. I like Roberts as a player, but I also think DeRosa is pretty good and with Roberts coming he really doesnt have a spot on this team from what I have heard.
  4. DC was definitely the worst stadium I have ever been to. The outfield sits hung over the field so we couldnt tell if the fly ball was a homerun, a double or an out unless we watched the base runner. Honestly the stairwells smelt like a combo of stale beer and urine and the fans were awful. It may have just been where we were sitting but the people were obnoxious and put a damper on the night. The price was terrific though. 5 bucks a piece for a big league game is a great deal to me even if the stadium is poor.
  5. Exactly what I was thinking. If the Cubs got Bedard that team would have scared me. I am glad he is staying in the AL. I still cant believe Baltimore wanted to trade Bedard but they did get better value than they would have in the purposed Cubs trades.
  6. I would actually like to deal from our surplus of starting pitching for a solid minor league reliever who can come in next year when the contracts are up for so many of our guys. I dont know what it would take to get a good late-inning bullpen prospect, but i think that would be a nice get.
  7. My vote is probably Gagne. Not that I think he is going to be terrible but i think we are going to miss Cordero a lot more than year than we want to believe. I would not have given Cordero the money he got but he was flat out dominant most of the time, whereas with Gagne I am just not sure what Gagne we are going to get.
  8. I think we are past seeing relief pitchers thrown in. I am guessing they would target Cappy and Gwynn seems to make sense for them too. I would love for it to be Vargas but I doubt he has that much value
  9. I think Hall is a good bet to bounce back. He just got in a funk and they couldnt get him straightened out. He will have all winter to figure it out. If if he doesnt become last seasons Hall, he still could bat .275ish and hit 25 home runs. Cappy has a shot for the 5th spot in the rotation if we decide we need a lefty. It is either him Bush, Vargas, or Parra. I would guess Parra starts in the bullpen or minors. Bush to me is the best option but could get the most in a trade. Vargas should be gone. Cappy is a low sell right now, so I doubt he will be traded unless Melvin gets a great offer. We need a closer and hopefully we can get him in a trade. I wish we had something worth trading to Minnesota for Nathan. Does anyone know what other closers would be on the market? Outfield-wise I love Gross and maybe Dillion or another righty. Gross has be a solid on-base guy. Him and Weeks back-to-back gets guys on base for Braun, Fielder and Hart. Catcher is a question mark. Keeping Estrada wouldnt be the worst thing, but an upgrade would be nice.
  10. My guess would be that they would trade some of the starting pitching depth ie Cappy, Vargas, or maybe even Bush to get relief pitching. I dont see any more than one of those guys starting. So the bullpen could get some help there. I dont feel like starting pitching is a need with Sheets, Yo, Carlos, Suppan, and then Parra, or one the aforementioned three pitchers being the 5th with the other being the long guy. I dont know a ton of the relief pitchers out there but I know we need some new blood. I dont see our future closer on this team unless Cordero would sign for less than what I think it will cost. I would hope we would be able to keep either Linebrink or Cordero. I read that Linebrink has had an ERA under 2 the last month, but I still dont think he is a closer. He could push Turnbow for the 8th inning spot with a closer coming via a trade. Infield is set. Outfield would be set if Hall can come back. I like a Dillion/Gross platoon, Hart and Hall. Catcher is a question mark even though i dont dislike Estrada as much as others.
  11. I cant think of a better possible half inning for suppan. 3 ground ball outs on 9 pitches
  12. What about Parra? Where does he fit in this discussion? I like our rotation next year a lot more than this year, because we wont have to worry as much about pitch limits. I think Cappy and Vargas are odd men out.
  13. I understand that there are two-sides to the Bush thing, but it seems like everyone who is saying we should have left Bush in think all of us who think Bush should have been pulled are saying this in hindsight. This just isnt true. Yes Bush gave up only 2 runs and was low on pitches but he was coming up to bat the next inning and we had a very rested bullpen with a day off tomorrow. If Linebrink came in and did give up one run like he did we still would have been up by 1. The reality is there were numerous good reasons to pull Bush and after Bush pitched in the 6th the whole room of guys i was with were calling for the bullpen. The strategy behind it made a bunch of sense. I was venting about the decision right when i saw bush walk toward the plate to bat. even if it would have worked i still would have thought it was the wrong move.
  14. my reason that he should have taken bust out was because he had been hit hard the inning before and he was coming up to bat to start the next inning. I know a lot of people will say it is because of his inability late in games but i think it was a pure strategy move. You pinch hit dillion for bush so you can try to pad the lead. then you go to linebrink the guy we traded for so our 8th and 9th inning guys get a chance. This isnt hindsight either. I was in a room with 6 fans watching the game and after bush pitched out of the 6th we all said the same thing. maybe most managers wouldnt do it but i think today it made a ton of sense
  15. I think sheets would command at least 15 million a yr. So i would say it would be 5 year 75-80 mil. Which would be terrible unless it meant we couldnt lock up some of the other talent on the team.
  16. looks like there is now a 6th year option at $19.25 million http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/08/17/zambrano.cubs/index.html Says he got $10 million more than he would have at the beginning of the season. I really dont know what to think of this deal. Seems like a ton of money for someone who is an up and down pitcher. I guess it depends on how he ages. If he gets this much, how much will Johan Santana command?
  17. SI is reporting the Cubs signed Zambrano to a five year, $91.5 million deal. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/08/17/zambrano.cubs/index.html (added tags --1992)
  18. I think you have a short leash with vargas his next couple starts and if he has more starts like last night you cant have him pitching down the stretch. I know he was coming off his best performance but i think that start was somewhat of a fluke. He didnt walk anyone that night and that is not like him at all. So i would say give him a couple starts. You have Parra keep his innings down the next couple weeks and then pitch if needed down the stretch. As for Bush there is no way you pull him. He is pitching well right now.
  19. looks like the days off are doing hardy some good. thats his second 3 hit game in the past 3 games if i am not mistaken
  20. shouse hasnt given up an earned run since June 4th against the cubs, which is a span of 17 innings. thats impressive
  21. i love the reds!
  22. i am guessing they just messed up weeks with hall.
  23. i love david weathers. He strikes out lee with runner on second.
  24. keplinger with a two run double 4-1 reds
  25. wow the reds have left a lot of runners on base. Hill is probably done with over 100 pitches through 5
