  1. Being a big Hardy fan I am actually glad to see him get the day off. He is someone who has gone into prolonged slumps before so it seems smart to give him a break to work out some kinks. And oddly enough Counsell is pretty hot right now in a small sample size. I like Gross, maybe not as a CF, but I like a guy who takes a lot of pitches batting after Weeks. Kendall is hot right now so I am not pumped to see him out of the lineup but I understand it.
  2. I still can't stand the Cubs announcers. Maybe it is because I dont get to watch much baseball but listening to them worship all the Cubs players is brutal. Maybe it is my inability to hear a grown man called "The Riot," or how it seems like every game one of their players is the best in the league at something. One game they said Angel Pagan was the best at running and making a catch in the outfield in all of baseball. Then later they said something else about another player and my wife who is a huge fan made a comment about how the Cubs announcers think their players are the best at a lot of things. As for the Brewers I dont get to watch a lot of their games but I have liked Brian and Bill is tolerable. One of the announcers did say something at the beginning of the game yesterday about the Giants having a good offense and I had to laugh.
  3. My issue with the Cubs team is what splitter mentioned. I feel like their lineup has more big questions marks. Can Pie hit at this level? Was Soto's year a fluke (Why are pundits quick to question Villanueva, Gallardo, and Parra but are completely in love with Soto)? Theriot just isnt that good. And obviously none of us really know how good Fukudome will be. Add those question marks to a rotation that to me is weak at 4 and 5. I just dont get all the love. Sure I think they are close with the Brewers, but World Series champs or runner-ups, I just don't see it.
  4. Honestly, I like the Indians in the AL like almost everyone else, but unlike most I cannot cheer for the Twins. I tried in college but I just couldn't do it. I am sure it is mainly out of jealousy. I also like the Red Sox until they got really good. In the NL, I dont know why but I like the Phillies. They were my team in the playoffs last year once the Brewers didnt get in
  5. I just find it interesting that Gagne is so suspect to the "experts" and rightfully so to some regard. Yet, Wood is getting this free pass like he is going to automatically be a lights out closer. I have questions about Gagne like ever one else. I am not expecting him to be like Cordero was the first half of last season when I felt like we could just give him the ball and it was over. I do expect him to be a middle of the pack closer.
  6. Gagne should have got to first, but Prince could have easily stepped on the bag. He just made a bad play, but unlike so many times that bad play didnt cost us. But I did like how Gagne bounced back from probably about as bad a start as you could draw up. Apparently we should be really worried about Gagne though, and oddly enough the Cubs should not worry at all about Kerry Wood. His poor pitching was just nerves but Gagne's was a result of being a bad pitcher (according to Ken Rosenthal) http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7975414/Opening-Day-results-can-offer-insight-and-confusion
  7. The silver lining with Gagne is that after he blew the 3-run lead there were still no outs. That is a game we would have lost right there last year. Yet Gagne did shut them down after that outside of a bad play by fielder. But I agree with Mota and Riske looking great. After one game I also like what Kendall brought to the table.
  8. Zambrano has way too many bad games. He had 10 games last year where he gave up five or more runs. That is out of 34 starts. Compare that to Sheets who gave up 5 or more 5 times in 24 games. Jake Peavey did it 3 times in 34 games. That is an elite pitcher. Some who even when they dont have their "A" stuff can keep their team in it. Zambrano doesnt have his "A" game almost a third of the time and gets crushed when he doesnt.
  9. Rumor is the Mets are highly interested from the CNNSI rumor mill.
  10. That sounds weird. A lot of what I have read about the LaPorta is that he is a classy guy. What exactly happened?
  11. Mine would be Sheets, Yo, Parra, Villy, Suppan Bullpen - Bush, Mota, Shouse, Torres, Turnbow, Riske, Gagne I would be okay with keeping Bush or Cappy. Trade whomever you can get more for. I do remember that Suppan did finish last year strong with ERA's of 3.9 and 3.86 the last two months. His other numbers werent great but he did keep us in the race along with Yo. I like him as a back-end starter.
  12. Even as a Brewer fan I dont think I can agree with that. I look at the Twins who have Nathan and Neshek and wonder how we are ahead of them. Maybe they dont have depth but that is a great 8th and 9th inning. Our bullpen COULD be good but right now we have a ton of question marks in my mind.
  13. I would love this if we could get minor league pitching with it. It opens the door for Parra to be in the rotation where he has shown he can be. Sheets, Yo, Soup, Parra, and Villy, with Bush as the long man look good to me. Zach Jack is also in the minors for a spot start if needed.
  14. You may think Hernadez was a lot better than Ortiz before the Twins signed him but the number beg to differ. Outside of ERA their WHIPS and BAA were similar. Ortiz actually had more K's in less innings. To me they are actually quite similar signings. I would rather have Hernadez but he isnt that much of an upgrade. The Twins could have gotten more but I think they wanted an innings eater without having to trade and give up prospects. Ortiz's numbers Team G GS W L SV CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BAA 2006 WAS 33 33 11 16 0 0 0 190.2 230 127 118 31 64 104 5.57 1.54 .297 Hernadez's numbers Team G GS W L SV CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BAA 2007 ARI 33 33 11 11 0 1 0 204.1 247 116 112 34 79 90 4.93 1.60 .308
  15. This was why I thought the Twins would have been a good trade partner for us. It was talked about in the rumors section. It looked obvious to me the Twins needed a veteren pitcher. In my opinion we could have offered something to them that was substantially better than a 32 year year old coming off a season where his ERA was just under 5, his WHIP was 1.6, and his BAA was .308. Sure he is an innings eater but those numbers were in the NL and a light hitting division. This is the kind of odd signing the Twins seem to make once an off-season. They made it last year with Ramon Ortiz and now this year with Hernadez.
  16. The first half of the season Gagne had an ERA of 1.32, an opposing BA of .158 and a WHIP under 1. His strikeout and BB stats did get better in Boston but the opponent BA sky-rocketed.
  17. Wow that Sporting News list shows how bad catching is in baseball right now. I don't think this board would have been happy with over half the people on that list
  18. Rowand got 5 years 60 million. I dont think that is affordable and he is 30 years old so not young. Yes Rowand five years younger than Cameron but Cameron got a one year deal for 7 million.
  19. I am surprised to see how Soriano's stats drop down the line-up but Robert's would give them a better OBP guy at the one spot. That lineup would be scary but I really dont think it is better than ours. Obviously this isnt probably how the lineups will look but I don't see a huge upgrade for them over us if any. I know the Cubs were looking at getting Marlon Byrd as well, but I am wondering what they would trade to get him if they trade for Roberts as well. Roberts - Weeks Fukudome - Cameron Lee - Braun Ramirez - Fielder Soriano - Hart Pie - Hall Soto - Hardy Theriot - Kendall I think any trade depletes their rotation's depth. Lieber will have to be in their rotation with Marquis. So they will have a nice 1,2,3 with Zambrano, Lilly and Hill, but is that better than Sheets, Gallardo, Suppan. The 4 and 5 spots are where I think we have the huge advantage with Villy, Cappy, Bush or Parra over Lieber, Marquis, Dempster or Traschel. I would take any of our four over any of there four possibilities. I think the Cubs and Brewers match up pretty evenly actually. It should be a fun season.
  20. Roberts scares me because he allows them to move Soriano down the lineup. Soriano not batting first will help this team. Dealing Marshall, Gallagher, and Murton would hurt their team's depth and their pitching in the long run in my opinion. Zambrano doesn't seem like he will age well, Marquis just is not that good, so outside of Hill and Lilly (who is 32) they do not have much depth in my opinion. I guess they will have the money to sign pitchers in the future but that is a risk. If they have to give up Marshall that guarantees two of either Marquis, Trachsel, or Dempster in the rotation and I see that as good for us. I guess I dont know a ton about their young pitchers but who else do they have?
  21. With so many early picks in the draft this year and the money that it will cost to sign them I would expect to see the Brewers be conservative Internationally.
  22. I actually think 3 million is pretty cheap right now for the Twins. There payroll is well below last year and this is the same team that gave Ramon Ortiz 3 million or more last year so I think they would look to make a trade if the price was right. The problem is I just dont know what they have to offer. They dont have a great 3rd base prospect. Their current number 5 prospect is a catcher by the name of Wilson Ramos so that would be intriguing. They have some young pitchers as well in their top ten.
  23. Well they dont have Fogg yet. I am pretty sure Cappy and Bush have more value than Bonser at least they do in my mind. And I still dont see how you can say they have plenty of options. Who do they have outside of the four already mentioned? Perkins, Humber, Mulvey, Swarzak? I think Bush and Cappy are better number 5 options than any of those guys and are relatively cheap. Gardenhire has never shown a tendency to rush pitchers into the rotation who are not ready. They waited to bring up Liriano, Garza, and Slowey for the likes of Ramon Ortiz and Sindey Ponson. So I do think they make sense as a team looking for cheap pitching with a solid upside which both Bush and Cappy have.
  24. Their pitching is not solid. The best ERA last year of the guys you mentioned was Baker with a 4.26, then Slowey had a 4.7 and then Bonser had a 5.1. That does not seem solid to me. Liriano is a stud IF he bounces back well. If they do get Fogg he had a 4.9 ERA. I would think the Twins would make decent training partners. I just dont know what they have to offer us other than prospects but since they are in a semi-rebuilding mold I dont know how much they would give up.
  25. I think the addition of Young will help that line-up but they were bad last year and lost Hunter. They were 25th in runs scored and in the bottom half of almost every category offensively. They added Mike Lamb, Brandon Harris, Craig Munroe, and Adam Everett but it will be interesting to see how that lineup performs when it is depended on to win games. Liriano, Baker, Bonser, Slowey, Humber/Perkins seems like a lot of potential in a year or two but not overly solid for the AL. I would be surprised to see them flirt with a .500 season, but obviously I could be way off. Just seems like losing your top two pitchers on what was an offensively challenged team spells a rough year.
