  1. The issue with Kipnis is contract and what Kipnis you get. Last year he wasnt good but the two years prior he was very good. If you get the 2015 and 2016 Kipnis with Yelich and Cain this lineup becomes incredibly good. Those three with Shaw, Braun, and the 1B platoon are all the type of hitters Stearns seems to be trying to grab.
  2. How do you plan on turning Santana into a number 2 or 3 starter without one of those two?
  3. odorizzi definitely had a down year last year but this is where you trust your gm and staff. If they think they can tweak something to get him back to a solid starter then it makes sense. He isnt far removed from being a good pitcher and he wouldnt cost much
  4. http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/rays/2018/02/03/surprise-surprise-odorizzi-is-still-with-rays-for-now/ Odorizzi would be solid if the Brewers got one of the top end free agent pitchers. If he is all they add then it is a disappointment
  5. You have to give up a ton to lose a trade for a controllable, top of the rotation guy. None of the reported offers for Archer are what you would need to give up for a true top of the rotation guy who is cheap. The offers are what you have to give up for a number 2 starter who is cost controlled. A top of the rotation guy with anywhere near archers contract and years would cost way more than Barnes Santana Philips and peralta
  6. So your willing to give up Santana and either spare parts or under-performing prospects? Barnes is a "just ok" reliever coming off a very inconsistent year. Bickford's stock probably couldn't be much lower right now, so he'd be a "sell low". Wilkerson has basically no trade value. There are dozens of MiLB free agents out there that can provide what he does. Your second deal is odd, as it has Santana, a spare part in Aguilar who I guess would play 1B in Tampa, and Bickford and Nottingham coming off poor years, for Archer and three low-ceiling guys coming off very nice years. I don't get the appeal from the Rays' side. Good catch. I assumed he said Burnes because that deal would make sense. Tampa simply laughs at both those deals. They are awfully one-sided
  7. Winning cures all ills. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Astros (from the doldrum years) say hi. The Timberwolves? Almost every free agent would still choose Golden State and Houston and numerous others over the Timberwolves. Sure they are more likely but it hasn't made them the top destination. Baseball and basketball are quite different to with the cap space. The Brewers hope to be able to be a team that isn't written off by free agents but I doubt they ever become a lace guys view as better than LA or NY unless the player doesn't like big cities. The endorsements, culture, etc in those cities is hard to beat for the average player. Nothing wrong with that. Just reality. We are never likely to be the top choice
  8. Didn't someone recently confirm that the Brewers have the top offer? If he can't accept it at this point, STAY AWAY. It is extremely dangerous to acquire a player who doesn't want to be there but only went because it's the top offer, and a starting pitcher that age at that price is already dangerous enough. I'm not worried about them making an incredibly short-sighted trade for Archer, because Stearns knows better than to end up on the wrong side of a Gomez/Lucroy type of trade. But this is the first time he's had a blank check in free agency and I don't know how he's going to approach it because there's little short-term downside in lost prospects/picks. The problem is that it could very well be a bad contract much sooner than most people assume. Just because he isn't signing here now doesn't mean he doesn't want to be here at all. He just wants to be in la more. Can you blame him? They are a better team. He has familarity with the team. LA has the highest Japanese population in the US outside Hawaii. If you are looking at houses and have two you like but one is your dream home however it is a little out of your price range. You are going to see if the owners of your dream home come back with a counter that works for you. If they don't you will go with the second home that is a good option. That is what is happening. People are acting like Yu is a jerk because we aren't his first choice and that he is waiting to see if his first choice can make room for him. If we all had the leverage he does we would do the exact same thing
  9. I really wonder how much is being held up by what free agent pitcher - if any - the Brewers get. If they get Darvish or Arrieta are they more willing to go with a guy like Odorizzi, Bauer, etc? If they get Lynn or Cobb or no one do they want a guy who they see is more of a potential number 2 type guy like Archer (whether you see him that way or not some people obviously do).
  10. If Bauer can be had at a good price I think he is a terrific add with one of the fa starters. As many have said you really need a 7 man rotation with injuries especially with Nelson down for some time. FA starter, Anderson, Nelson, Bauer, Davies, Chacin, Woodruff and then Suter give you 8 guys who can start. Bauer is a guy who could take another jump up coming to the NL. His stuff is there. He is still young. He wont be a FA until 2021. Has his name been mentioned by any of the national people?
  11. It appears that he is either hinting at Trevor Bauer or the fact that something should happen in the next 24 hours. Curious what Trevor Bauer would cost, though he doesn't really move the needle as much as Archer would. Also probably would not cost Burnes though. What does 24 have to do with Trevor Bauer? I think they mixed Trevor Bauer up with Jack bauer
  12. I am definitely down with Santana and Burnes plus another prospect. Santana Burnes, Peralta and Philips is more than I feel really comfortable with. If the Brewers do it I will be a huge Archer guy. I just think Philips is a big help to the team this year. Losing him would hurt our depth and take away the guy who can cheaply replace Braun in the future.
  13. Agree 100 percent. Woodruff and Burnes are solid pitching prospects but some on this board treat them like top 10 prospects. To get a young, controllable, top of the rotation starter you are going to give up Burnes or woodruff for sure
  14. The Archer and darvish/arreita pairing would fit what hgh heat is saying that the Brewers are looking for a cheaper and more expensive pitcher
  15. Yes, it's called 2012. Actually it is called 2016. He may have only played 135 games but that may be a good number anyway and he put up very good numbers. If he repeats 2016 he may not be our best hitter but that would mean a couple other guys had great years
  16. That assumes Nelson comes back at 100% of what he was. They need to acquire two pitchers in my opinion. I am not too worried about Nelson. He is supposed to be back around June and has already started throwing.
  17. I don't see Darvish coming here but if he did this team would be really solid when Nelson returns. Darvish, Nelson, Anderson, Davies and Chacin is a rotation that could win a lot of games. The bullpen looks like it has solid pieces. And the lineup has definitely improved. Obviously things happen but if darvish signs I see us as a playoff team
  18. Any thought this deal is waiting to see if darvish signs here or somewhere else. Not sure if a pitcher is necessary if we get darvish. Brewers could use santigo to improve other spots
  19. Yeah well no offense to BF but a lot of the proposals on here tend to not be very realistic. As I said elsewhere in this thread, getting 5 years of Yelich for just two Baseball America Top 100 prospects, only one of which is a Top 50 prospect, is incredible. It's certainly not an overpay. BA rankings are a good way of stepping back to get objective value on players who we as Brewers fans are overfamiliar with and thus overvalue. Agreed. When brewerfan poster proposal are your barometer you will always think we lost a trade. Every fan base overvalues their own prospects/players and undervalues other teams'
  20. Absolutely no analysts I have read are saying the Brewers overpaid for yelich
  21. What would need to happen with those prospects for the trade to be fine for you guys? If brinson and Harrison both become solid starters but Diaz and Ya flame out is it ok? Or can only one of those two turn into a starter? I have only seen a couple reports but both think the Brewers did a good job selling high on prospects in this deal. My gut after most trades is as fans we overvalue our own prospects but sometime front office people just don't love what they see in their own guys. I have no idea how good those 4 are. It could end up being a terrible deal. All I know is right now yelich at his age and that contract is a huge value for the Brewers. Have there been analysts who think the Brewers gave up way too much?
  22. That insight crasnick got from asking is amazing. Swing and misses a lot. Not a great OF and about to get more expensive. Nothing about hits for power, runs well, will still be really cheap even as he gets expensive, etc. Santana isnt an all star but he is a solid and cheap and young of. There is a market other teams just aren't going to lead how great they think he is
  23. I never like the argument that if a team has to trade a guy they get less value. Most of the time it is used when a team is likely to trade a guy. That is the case with Santana. The Brewers are likely to trade Santana just like they were likely to trade Gomez and Lucroy and they got great value. outside of a guy saying he wants out or won't resign there isnt situations where you have to trade a guy. Every trade deadline is filled with guys who are very likely to be traded and teams still get good value. The Brewers could easily move Braun to first. They could keep Philips in triple a and have thames, broxton and Aguilar as bench bats.
  24. 18 and 28 in offensive WAR for Cain and yelich isn't reasonably proven. It is very good offensive players. Much better than what they are replacing. To put it in prospective Shaw was the best Brewer at 46.
  25. Agreed. Abreu is a stud but this team has other needs and shouldn't be dealing Brinson for an upgrade at 1B. What if getting abreu also prompts darvish to come? A line up with abreau, braun, Santana, Shaw, etc would score a bunch of runs. A rotation with Darvish, Nelson, Anderson, Davies and whoever wins the 5th spot is very good. Keeps hader in the bullpen with knebel as well. All while really only giving up one prospect
