  3. (Italics added by me)I hate to sound snarky, but wouldn't "relievers and bottom-end of the rotation guys" be the majority of Brewers pitchers during Macha's tenure? Also - if you need a 40 man spot for a callup or a claim or whatever, why Dave Bush instead of moving Hawkins to the 60 day DL? since he's certainly not returning in '10.
  4. UW-Madison chancellor Biddy Martin is holding her own nicely with Uecker in the radio booth. She's there to talk about the Seligs' gift of an endowed chair in history , his plans to write his memoirs at UW-Madison in his post-commissioner days, and a donation to UW's Good People scholarship fund in the Seligs' names (made by Mark Attanasio, Lew Wolff and Tom Werner).
  5. Could a waiver transaction be in the works? I can't imagine what else might be up given the timing. Plus I'm now curious to know who I'll see take the mound on Sunday. I'm in the camp that believes Dave hasn't been "the same" since his arm absorbed that liner in Florida last June. I'll always appreciate his performance on 10/4/2008, though. He played a significant role in the absolutely best night of my baseball life (to date). Thank you, Dave. I mean it.
  6. Before Tuesday's game, as we wandered over toward the Selig statue, we saw our ticket rep on duty at the season ticket window #5. We waved at him and he waved us over to present $20 in food/merchandise vouchers. Props to Nate! (and for those cynics assuming he's just trying to buy us for 2011, I considered that possibility myself; but I think Nate realizes that if any of his clients are diehard enough to not need wooing with vouchers, it is probably the hawing household.)
  7. In ancient RomeThere was a poemAbout a dog Who found two bonesHe picked at oneHe licked the otherHe went in circlesHe dropped dead! I don't know if Freedom of Choice meant as much to me as it did pogo, but I thought of that lyric block immediately. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  8. In 1995, when (as colbyjack correctly states) the future of the Brewers in Milwaukee looked anything but clear, I actually had a mental short list of teams to which I would consider switching loyalties, if worse came to worst. It was mostly small/smaller market teams: Cleveland, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Seattle. I list them alphabetically because I don't remember if I had them ranked otherwise. I'll bet I'd have had Tampa Bay on the list if they'd existed then. I don't think I had Colorado on the list, but I wouldn't add them now. I don't remember having the Twins on the list. My hatred for the Cubs hadn't really deepened yet, but I didn't feel they needed my support as a fan. Same went for the mega-market NY and LA-area teams. St. Louis, naturally, was right out. Like Warning Track Power, whatever new identity the Brewers franchise took on would immediately become the Anti-Franchise to me, to be loathed. I don't know if I would loathe the players, but ownership? no doubt.
  9. Sorry, folks, I can barely stay long enough to post the lineups. 10. I have no inside information, but judging by the size of the tent they had up, and hearing about the number of dignitary types in attendance, it does not surprise me that the dignitaries would have filled up the tent.
  11. Two administrators at my work are using our tickets for tonight's game. It would be nice for me if the Brewers gave them something positive to talk to me about in the morning.
  12. Like Bikeage77, I have some memorabilia from my grandfather. He was a fan of Milwaukee baseball (Braves and Brewers) and after he died in 1997 my aunt kindly saved some of the baseball things for me. (I have a sneaking feeling that she might have kept more valuable items for herself, but that's off-topic.) I don't have photos (yet), but I have a wooden bat pencil from the Milwaukee Braves era which is pretty neat. What I actually like best, though, is a handful of his ticket stubs from some of those home games the White Sox played at County Stadium in the late 1960s. I was floored to see that he sat in Lower Grandstand 3, which in the end years of County Stadium was also our season ticket section. Circle of life. We brought one of the stubs to the last game at County and had our picture taken at the seat - like I wasn't emotional enough that day, but I'm still glad we did it. Since this is becoming kind of a "favorite collectibles" thread, I'll add that one of my favorite Brewers collectibles is my Rob Deer growth chart, which I got in 1987. It was one of those 16-and-under giveaways but at the time, everyone thought I looked "young" (I was 21) and the person handing out the posters didn't even blink when she gave me one. I am pretty sure I am the only Barnard Hall resident in the history of UW-Madison to sport a Rob Deer growth chart on a dorm room wall. This is a safe bet because Barnard was a women-only dorm until just recently.
  13. Was I the only one wondering why Bush didn't walk Rod Barajas to get to Lilly in the demon 6th inning? Did FSWisconsin show Bush screaming into his glove as he left the mound after the 6th finally ended? What was the point of the tool sitting a few rows behind me yelling "down in front" at me for having the audacity to stand during the bottom of the 9th almost-rally? (He was an older guy and at first I thought perhaps he was not mobile enough to stand for the 9th himself, but he had no problem standing after the game to mug for photos with his friends.) Besides these vexing questions, our nephew felt sick for part of the game and spent much of it in the first aid office. But he got air conditioning, a bed that goes up or down, FSWisconsin video and Uecker audio - so he really didn't mind. So the night was kind of a bummer, but it won't stop me from being lonely for games in the off-season.
  14. I did finally hear from a Brewers employee about this photo. It comes from the Brewers' archives, though it obviously predates the Brewers as an organization. Anyway, the source is internal. Incidentally, I also asked about the more recent photos that line the Club concourse (many of which are from the exciting end of the 2008 season). Those are MLB property and even copies are not available to the general public.
  15. It's a Bring-the-Nephew Night for hawing, so come on, Brewers - remind me why they don't play games on paper, because the matchup "on paper" doesn't look all that. Also, those of you attending tonight's game may as well watch the videoboard for said nephew along with bensheeps' son (aka the videoboard magnet). Section 220 FTW.
  16. On Monday night FS Wisconsin rebroadcast the August 6 game, featuring the Brewers' improbable 9th inning comeback vs. the Astros, aided by the perhaps even more improbable Inglett Crush. That's my favorite game of 2010 (to date), so I was delighted to see it again.
  17. The first time we saw David Riske pitch for the Brewers was at one of the 2008 exhibition games. My mother, who was with us, asked who that was when he took the mound. By the following Monday (opening day '08), she was emailing me about "good ol' Riske" coming in late in the game, like she'd known of him his whole career instead of for 48 hours. So he's always jokingly been "good ol' Riske" in the hawing household. I'd call his signing unfortunate for both sides, due to the injury, and wish David well going forward.
  18. Thanks, TC. Perhaps some former, early-career coach or manager told him that .260 is his goal and that has become his mantra. At least, I hope it wasn't someone from the Brewers' organization.
  19. Attending games like today's is a solid test of my ability to seek out the positive in a situation. For example, AKA Pete has coined the perfect nickname for the guy I used to call Pluckstein (and, during today's game, something that rhymes but isn't forum friendly). Thanks, Pete! My only regret now is that the Brewers don't face him again this season, barring an unexpected last-minute trade, so I can't deploy this nickname in a real-time situation until 2011. The weather was also very nice, much less humid than in Madison; and I had enjoyable in-person chats with jflick1215, bensheeps and his son. As for the on-field results...I admit, I was wondering today who the "long guy" would be if needed. Probably not Cappy, certainly not McNewGuy, and who did that leave? I had a decent idea of what we were going to get with Manny, but Riske, Coffey and by now even Loe are just as capable of blowing up games.
  20. That's a good looking cat, Adam. Our first cat (before the ones pictured earlier in this thread) had that gray/white/little bit of orange colored coat, so your photos took me down memory lane a bit. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif
  21. My first car was a 1990 Corolla. I bought it new because I had just moved to a new city and to take a used car to a mechanic I trusted would have required driving it across the state. I had it until 1998 and can literally count on one hand the few problems I had with it. "Steady but not flashy" is an apt description, which made it a very good car match for me.
  22. Yeah, I have a feeling it'll be asking too much to do it again (win) on Sunday, but I'll take my customary hopeful approach to the park.
  23. I can't verify it offhand, but I think you are right. I wonder who gave him that idea.
  24. I wouldn't mind seeing some Badger Mutual insurance runs, so we are not operating on the slimmest of leads.
