  1. I remember that Brewers Str8up episode. Corey and his little Harts and the minivan ride. I can't find a transcript yet. I suppose it'll be a little while yet before it's posted?
  2. In a personal-security sense, it would be helpful to know a little more about what happened (did the victim interrupt a burglary? Were the doors on the house locked, suggesting a break-in, or was the perpetrator just looking for unlocked houses, which in that neighborhood is not super uncommon?). However, I realize that police have to balance the release of details with the integrity of the investigation. I expect that's why they aren't sharing all the information they have. I used to live pretty close to the neighborhood where the January homicide happened, and my medical clinic is very close to Brittingham Park. So for me, these have hit "close to home." But I am reluctant to criticize police at this time. Not every crime is like that one in Cambridge where the dude murdered the Realtor during an appointment he'd made with her. Hmm, I wonder why he was apprehended so quickly?
  3. Well, fair enough. The version of that song (which the lottery rips off) came out when I was in preschool. I think the real song is fine. More like easy listening. And I figured we had crossed paths at softball (though I'm sorry to say that most of you I couldn't identify if you didn't have your uniform or some bf.net shirt on). New random thought: I love living in Madison, and being part of the UW community - but the dark side is that the vast majority of people I encounter on campus are destined to leave some day. I should be used to it by now, but I still hate that part.
  4. Wow, that's rough. I think having your parents split up is distressing at almost any age. I haven't felt the same about my father (who indicated that he wanted to end his marriage by leaving) since the day my mom told us about it in the summer of 1979. I was 13 at the time. Sometimes I felt a bit envious of my sister, who was young enough then to not really remember our "intact" household. The pending loss of your childhood home is a real loss, too, whether related to divorce or other factors Of the places I lived as a child, my favorite house by far was the one where we lived during my teen years - which my mother had to sell while I was in college because she couldn't afford to keep it up after my dad left (and rarely paid support). I found that transition difficult, even though I wasn't living there full-time anymore. I remember my dad stopping by for the last of his things shortly before we left that house; I was the only one at home at the time, so I had to talk to him, and he was making offhand comments about how my mom shouldn't be selling such a nice house. I longed to point out that maybe she could have stayed there had he fulfilled his court-ordered child support obligation - but for various reasons, I thought better of it. Since then, I've always envied people who still had access to their childhood homes. My grandparents owned the same house in Janesville for about 75 years, and that place was a comfort to visit until my grandpa died and it had to be sold. Two years ago, my mom moved out of the smaller house (the one she left my beloved house for), and even that stung a bit. Though I didn't really ever reside in that house, it was still my connection to the town where I went to high school - and now we have no reason to visit there. And geez, your dog even. You are really hitting the "loss" trifecta (not that you need to be told that). Is there no way she could join you in Portland? Would it be worth your moving to a place that allows dogs? Or is it at least possible for you to get back to Wisconsin for a chance to say goodbye? That might make me maddest of all. My family's had its share of trials and tribulations, but man, we never turned our backs on a pet. (Though giving her to a family is obviously better than just letting her loose or something.) Anyway - you're neither crazy nor alone for feeling kicked in the gut over things like this. I hope the experiences shared in this thread help you manage these losses.
  5. Hmm. Neither laughing nor offended, just confused. The radio ad I decried in the chat last night (which rips off Dionne Warwick's 1970 hit) doesn't seem folksy to me. Is there another ad (TV or radio) that for some reason makes you think of librarians?
  6. I see Madison Metro route numbers and think of their uniform equivalent. (I get a tiny thrill at taking the Robin Yount bus to work. My least favorite of the buses that serve my neighborhood is the Ned Yost route.) But that's more of a Brewers addiction than a Brewerfan addiction.
  7. Outdoors: Weeding Indoors: Litter boxes
  8. Well, maybe the chat is an option for people who have no video access tonight.
  9. Ahem: there's always the in-game chat. It's nearly like hanging out with other posters.
  10. Speaking as a non-boy (and therefore non-fanboy type), I would like to see Trenni introduced to brewerfan.net...as long as you fellas can keep a lid on your crushes.
  11. Mentos plus soda equals explosion I saw this demonstrated live at a young nephew's Mythbusters-themed birthday party last summer.
  12. I do this all the time on the UW-Madison campus. Was it anyone here who wore a navy Corey Hart jersey tee to lunch at the Rathskeller on opening day, then wore a different piece of Brewers swag the rest of last week?
  13. Oh, check this out: http://www.mymms.com/images/mlb/MLB_MIL_lentils.jpg You can now buy MLB themed M&Ms. Ten pounds for under $270.00!
  14. Ohh, don't change your avatar, Glennron. I love it. Corey in action!
  15. This reminds me of when I was younger and I would pretend it was my birthday to get free ice-cream around town. (Not to say your students are lying). Yeah, I get their birthdates when they fill out the employment formage - so they really can't fake it.
  16. Fortunately, the attack turkeys are farther west than my 'hood. When I was a teenager living in Monroe, my family lived near a small private pond in the middle of town. One year some Canada geese were attracted to the pond, and got pretty aggressive around humans. My mom had left payment in our mailbox for a workman (it was the 1970s, I guess people weren't as security focused) and when she found the payment still there at the end of the day, she called the workman - who explained that he tried to get the payment but was driven away by "your attack geese." This didn't seem to be considered a problem until the geese started going after golfers at the nearby country club. Then action was taken and we never saw geese in the neighborhood again.
  17. Mmm...malted milk balls. B19, you can revise your thesis this close to graduation? Or is it not a big revision? Or did your graduation date change? Two of my student employees have their birthdays this week and tonight I made a treat for them. That's right, home baked goodies on your birthday if you work for me. Before sunset I did some raking outside. Our yard is dense with plants instead of grass, and I want the emerging bulbs to not be suffocated by the mat of leaves over everything.
  18. No way! I'm a Believer is our song!
  19. The Pirates' pitcher is named Meek? Oh, come on. Even I'd want to make fun of that.
  20. We saw a Toyota Yaris over the weekend and realized that it would be the perfect car for a pirate to drive, at least name-wise. I'm posting this here in the hope that I remember this bit come International Talk Like A Pirate Day (September 19). Yarrrr-is.
  21. Is this the Pirates' home opener?
  22. We sat near the Maniac at a Tomo Ohka start a few years back. Before the game, Maniac was shouting something in Japanese to Ohka. Just don't do stuff like that, and you won't be perceived as odd.
  23. Not that I like to concede anything to cub nation, but I can imagine about how one of our IGTs would go if the Brewers blew a big lead to the Pirates. Just saying. Let's go Bucs.
  24. The least the Pirates could do is play (and call plays) like this when they face Milwaukee.
  25. They did indeed play Welcome to the Jungle. It didn't seem to fire up the fans - I think they (like I) were reserving judgment en masse. Has anyone figured out Prince's song?
