  1. Man, oh man, this was a kick to the gut, even before the off-field news became known. It's probably good that the break is almost here for most of the team. I hope they can find and engage the reset button.
  2. I was just going to comment on this. This roster development stands to put a dent in the emotional value I placed on my game-worn Kottaras 2011 jersey, which is from the NLDS.
  3. I appreciate your sharing this, DS. I'm going to try to keep your observations in mind when I'm tempted to hate on Yadi.
  4. I was actually looking forward to Jonathan having the opportunity to make a difference later in the all-star game, so part of me is let-down by this development. Plus, as splitter says, you want the best players to be available. I guess if something had to happen to Yadier, I'm selfishly glad it came against some team other than the Brewers. No one needs the distraction of goofball conspiracy theorists. Like others here, though, I'd hardly count STL out of contention. How'd they do in 2011 again, without Adam Wainwright? I know that losing an everyday player is a different hazard, but if any team strikes me as a "next man up" baseball machine, it's these guys. Besides, every player in every game is one slide, swing, pitch or collision away from being in the same boat or worse. (Plus it's not like there isn't a thumb issue affecting the 2014 Brewers already. If we decide not to call this year the year of Tommy John surgery, we could always call it the year of the thumb injury.)
  5. Phillies: CF Tony Gwynn Jr. SS Jimmy Rollins 2B Chase Utley 1B Ryan Howard RF Marlon Byrd 3B Cody Asche LF Domonic Brown C Cameron Rupp RHP David Buchanan Brewers: CF Carlos Gomez 2B Scooter Gennett C Jonathan Lucroy 3B Aramis Ramirez RF Ryan Braun LF Khris Davis 1B Mark Reynolds SS Jeff Bianchi RHP Matt Garza SAVE US MATT GARZA.
  6. Along these lines, what if you have an injury that does not have a (reliable) surgical solution? Like maybe Ryan's thumb issue? I can imagine MLB and/or the anti-enhancement-of-any-sort crowd saying that would be the start of a slippery slope, but could we not argue that baseball is already on the slope? Sorry, I don't mean to start another "he's bad/he's not so bad" mega-debate.
  7. If my superpower is in fact propelling Brewers to first-time all-star appearances, then it won't work with Jean. I was thinking of suggesting that the Brewers have SSHs meet the Khrush next year, though.
  8. It's tempting to be all "OK, Yadi, you won the popularity contest," but with Aramis starting I don't think Brewers fans can take that angle to gripe. Mostly off-topic: This is the third year that I've met a player at a season seat holder event (the thing that has been in April where you say hi to a player and get a signed ball or something), and that player has gone on to make his first all-star team. I met Corey Hart in 2008, Carlos Gomez last year, and Luc in April. The players should be lining up to meet me next spring. I'm only somewhat kidding. Look at it this way: Luc can get the late inning heroics glory.
  9. Maybe Google believes there's enough intersection between their (global) users and the World Cup's audience to warrant the high profile coverage. I can't even pretend to be a casual soccer fan myself. I'm not a hater, but I am by no means an enthusiast. All games have been shown at UW-Madison's Memorial Union, where we usually have lunch, so it's been on in our background as we eat. What I do like about the World Cup (and I realize I'm off topic now since it doesn't really bug me) is seeing the rest of the world get so excited over something instead of just Americans. Every game that's been on at the Union during our lunches has a crowd, regardless of participating teams; and with UW having a decent sized contingent of international students, there seems to always be someone watching from a participating country, no matter what the country. UW-Madison has at least one student from every World Cup nation this year except Ivory Coast. (Link)
  10. Another Canada game, another uncommonly early start time. Your Milwaukee Brewers: DH Rickie Weeks RF Ryan Braun 1B Jonathan Lucroy CF Carlos Gomez 3B Aramis Ramirez SS Jean Segura C Martin Maldonado LF Elian Herrera 2B Jeff Bianchi (RHP Wily Peralta) Those Canuckian Toronto Blue Jays, and that: SS Jose Reyes RF Melky Cabrera DH Jose Bautista 1B Adam Lind LF Edwin Encarnacion C Dioner Navarro CF Colby Rasmus 3B Juan Francisco 2B Munenori Kawasaki (LHP J.A. Happ) Play ball! Before noon for many Brewers spectators, because of course.
  11. Commenting late, because our games this week were the long ones (Tuesday and Thursday, and we stayed to the end of each, then drove back to Madison)...the SO and I, along with thablingster, took in this one from the Toyota Territory. The seats are now first come, first served, so we "upgraded" from the terrace box for a night, just to see what it was like, without having to pay for an upgrade or buy a food package like you'd have to in the picnic area. I'd do it again. It was neat to watch from an angle nearly opposite our ordinary seats, and with absolutely no one in front of us. For this short fan who is resigned to having to look around taller fans and try not to focus on railings, the visibility was AWESOME. With Rickie's laser blast coming so early in the game, I totally missed that ball and only realized it was a home run due to the crowd reaction; but was able to follow the others and see the entire arc of the ball. For Scooter's homer, in our regular seats I'd have had to pause for a moment to make sure it wasn't just a deep fly, but from the territory I could see early on that it was a no doubter. I would have considered this a long, late game, had it happened before Tuesday's. After the 16-inning odyssey, we got home at 2:17 AM. After this game it was "only" 12:49 AM. If commuting time and sleep deprivation figured into fan loyalty, we'd get a boost this week.
  12. Even if they don't, Deadspin has you covered, for the one play at least: Link That little grin Segura gives the camera at the end of the clip...that's nice.
  13. In my mind, it's a bummer that Kintzler took the loss, but from the 9th inning on in a tie game on the road, the opponent has an automatic degree of advantage just by being the home team. I'm partly relieved that Garza largely avoided the brain-freeze throws that were so vexing on Sunday.
  14. I've yet to find damage in our near west hood. Poster Team Canada lives closer to some of the Madison action, but he reported no damage to his house. Platteville got hammered with something, too - enough to (among other things) close UW-Platteville today. Plus the gas station with Ed's Cafe was badly damaged. Ed's! Piece-of-crap timing for people with day jobs (midnight hour for Dane County), though at least we were up because of the late end to the Brewer game. It will probably be a multiple Dr Pepper day for me. Bummer for the employee I'm supposed to train this afternoon.
  15. On the day that the "white Bronco" chase happened (June 17, 1994), we were in our car with a friend, with the Brewer game on. That was the game where we heard the following Uecker home run call, which has since become a hawing household classic: "Get out the cheese and crackers, fans! It's a grand salami!" Later we got home and saw the non-baseball news unfolding on TV. Here's the Retrosheet boxscore from that game: Boxscore Dave Nilsson hit the salami vs. the Yankees.
  16. Isn't late July/August PRECISELY WHEN the media have to force feed us that level of Packers detail? I thought about putting that in blue and then decided not to. More seriously, I can't gauge this as well as some of you might because I avoid practically all talk radio. I see at least as much Brewers swag on people in Madison as I usually do in the season.
  17. Sorry to be Captain Downer. I mean, [sarcasm]I know it's never been really discussed on Brewerfan before.[/sarcasm]
  18. So...heck of a game Wednesday night. I'm going to suggest we steer back to 6/11 game talk rather than the Braun tangent.
  19. Oh, man, I somehow overlooked this from April. Sophia is way more tolerable than Ann Carroll (reaching back a bit), but eeeeyikes, that's bad if you're trying to convey an understanding of baseball. Fun fact: Sophia graduated from the high school that's three blocks from my house.
  20. If I didn't really like my current signature, I'd switch it to this.
  21. Ueck is doing some road games, just not all. I believe he's in the booth for this upcoming Mets series.
  22. We've been tracking the magic number in my household since it was at 157. You are correct in your math. Your household is awesome.
  23. Is he rocking Japan like a Yunicane, or a Yunami?
