  1. Gotta cover all the bases? Or at least the two most likely bases?
  2. I was happy for the Pirates' fanbase last fall, with their long postseason drought ending; but I was struck last night by how nearly all of my PIT goodwill was just gone. By the end of the game I was in schadenfreude mode. It's like they're yesterday's news. I can't say I was particularly happy to see SF advance, since they're going to just feel like they're all but entitled to win it all in even numbered years. But for once I was able to watch a game and have absolutely zero rooting interest. On another topic, it certainly looks like colored (not white) rally towels are the in thing for 2014. Royal blue for KC looked pretty good, I thought, while black for PIT gave PNC (a stadium I really, really like) kind of an evil tone.
  3. Our own SeriesFinale, on the Twitters, is calling the Royals the Zombie Brewers. Between that and the generally positive experiences I've had in our two visits (three games) to Kauffman, I can get behind KC in the playoffs. Seeing the happy fans last night brought back more than a few 2008/2011 memories. I'm also capable of separating out the Yostness of it all. Plus, who knows what would happen if Nedster managed the AL in the 2015 all-star game?
  4. Read Jason Kendall's book Could you elaborate so I don't have to read the book? I've got enough things I'm already assigned to read. You guys have just reminded me that I was going to look for that book. I just requested a copy through interlibrary loan. I'll aim to report back once I've read it. I was disappointed and a little mystified at the lack of fanfare for Rickie this weekend. His last at-bat Saturday ended with a hit and a quick PR substitution, and as we now know, he didn't appear on Sunday, maybe by choice. If he really didn't want to be the center of attention, I can identify with that, though I would have happily joined in on a thank-you ovation. There seemed to be extra Weeks gear on fans on Sunday, so I was certainly not the only one ready and willing to say thanks/bye. My memories of Rickie span the emotional spectrum: Brian the Automator's "Sign Rickie now!" signature from the early early Brewerfan years, that first-HR night shared with Prince, being horrified to see him crumple in a heap on that run to first in 2011 (I thought for sure it was his ACL at first). I appreciate his efforts here and wish him well going forward.
  5. The same appears in today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. It won't win back every disappointed fan, but I think it's a nice touch that didn't have to be done. I also enjoyed the challenge of figuring out each of the participants, since I've seen few of their autographs previously: Left column, top to bottom: Reynolds, Braun, Jeffress, Weeks, Gomez, Fiers, Wooten, Overbay, and Herrera. Second column, top-bottom: Smith, Lohse, Ramirez, Wang, Estrada, Nelson. Third column, top-bottom: Gallardo, Maldonado, Gennett, Gorzelanny, Broxton. Right column: K-Rod, Parra, Lucroy, Kintzler, Garza, Davis, Peralta, Segura, Schafer. I rather like Logan's comment about the "true fans who understand and endure." I'm not sure how pointed that's supposed to be. Also, commence the speculation (if you care to) about the absence of RRR's thanks. Zach Duke is the only more or less "main roster" occupant whose name doesn't appear. At this point, I'd rather have this on my office wall than the "one unforgettable story" poster with the 2014 schedule on it.
  6. My goodness, was that ever a game. I shudder to think of what kind of physical and mental condition we'd all be in today had either of last night's teams been the Brewers. I was marginally rooting for the Royals but would have been content with either team advancing. Seeing the KC fans finally get their chance after a long drought took me back multiple times to both 2008 and 2011. Joe Posnanski wrote a terrific piece on the game, with plenty of Ned criticism for those of you who like that: The Beauty of Belief
  7. I've got more thoughts to put down here later, but for now, this memory: http://peninsulaclarion.com/images/062605/9420_256.jpg
  8. Yeah, Uecker's sign says 50 (for years in baseball), but 50 is not retired. I had the same idea as BSC: give Selig 70, for his bringing baseball back to MKE in 1970. That wouldn't displace a commonly used uniform number and would have a meaning similar to Uecker's 50. Unfortunately, I wasn't consulted, and now that they've had the presser and stuff, it's too late to change to 70 now. I do suspect they chose 1 to signify his "#1" status in the Brewers' organization.
  9. Don't let the pitch hit you on the way out, Kirk.
  10. Some fans have reported receiving their postseason tickets, or emails indicating that their postseason tickets have been mailed. What an awkward position for the ticket reps. MLB's timetable most likely said that teams not eliminated by date X had to mail out their tickets on date Y, regardless of how imminent the elimination might be. Reason no. 7936 why I am not cut out for sales. I would not care to field the season ticket holders' questions for the time being.
  11. It's been locked, because the link to the Minor Leagues thread is still useful.
  12. Do both the Pirates and Giants have to win tonight, for a Brewers loss to be the final nail tonight? This doesn't mean I don't realize it's a matter of time.
  13. I'm dismayed that the 1998-quality SI.com clip I used to post of the Brant Brown Game recap appears to be no longer available. However, there's a still shot: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fRrjyahGvKc/TFWUr38qzyI/AAAAAAAAAcU/4EPy4GmAxfc/s320/dropLR.jpg And this link. Never forget. It was so entertaining, and would have ranked high on my "interesting games seen in person" list even if Brant had caught that last fly.
  14. This (especially the part I bolded above). I was just pondering since last night how you'd think the "Best Fans in Baseball" would be secure enough in their position that they wouldn't choose to put so much effort into picking at/on other teams and fanbases, not to mention into reminding everyone else about how they're the best. If these were the only two choices, I'd rather lose with the Brewers' personnel than win with St. Louis'.

  16. You guys, my random contribution to this IGT is that I got a foul ball during the game! Top of the 8th, Todd Frazier fouled an Estrada pitch back toward the press box. The ball caromed off the press box wall and landed in my baseball bag. I was ducking, heard an odd noise and saw the ball in my bag. The hilarious thing was how many of the fans sitting around us remarked "nice catch" to me after. There was no catch, unless you count the bag being in the right place at the right time. I was also plunked in the back by a different caroming foul ball in the 7th, this one off Braun's bat. I don't think it even left a bruise, though.
  17. Why is Latos a scumbag? Just curious. RR better keep a sharp eye on Lohse. The man is pitching injured. Because he looks scummy. I'm sure he's actually a nice guy though. Welp, his cat is named Cat Latos, which I find amusing. Here is a video of Mat and Cat "dancing." But it's not like I want him or the Reds to succeed tonight.
  18. It's hard to imagine the threat level (for lack of a better phrase) being the same for Milwaukee as for, say, New York, Boston or LA, but I can see why MLB wants to keep it consistent. I'm not a fan of the decision, but will aim not to take it out on the employees who are staffing the entrances. We already tend to arrive on the early side, so I'll hope that makes it less likely we'll miss a first pitch or the like. If an employee is checking my bag anyway, do I take the bag through the detector or put it in a tray? Saturday night, with the Hank crowd, will be a pretty solid test of the whole system. I wonder how many will come in long enough to get their Hank merchandise and head right out.
  19. Thank you, Pirates; and thank you, bf.net, for not already posting a photo of my Brou: http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mUivaFZ5pjPYK7WMxBZfyxg.jpg
  20. Pirates 5, Cardinals 2 on an 8th inning 3-run blast by Ike Davis. Better tonight than two days ago. http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTA3N1g4MDM=/z/UMkAAOxyrM5TGiRy/$_35.JPG
  21. I'd forgotten that they were close enough in 2012 for postseason invoices to be a thing. I found our invoice from that season and we would have sat in 214, row 12. So I guess that was slightly closer (to our 217 regular seats) than our 2011 location in 222. Weird that I never even took notice of the seat location in 2012. Indeed, even last night I had to give the form a double take before I noticed the location. Sorry, carry on.
  22. Aw, you took my Dave Bush idea, so I will raise you a Muscle: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7391/569/320/branyan.jpg Also a Burke Badenhop: http://sportsofboston.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/badenhop.jpg And finally, a Bronswell Patrick: http://cache4.asset-cache.net/gc/340493-jul-1998-pitcher-bronswell-patrick-of-the-gettyimages.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=OCUJ5gVf7YdJQI2Xhkc2QKNpiH5FtmCizlpWBpf%2FrpU8wgBhA0iYPzjr%2FQ2XhWgb
