  1. How many more mid 30's pitchers do we have to sign to multi-year deals and have them blow up in the last year of the deal before we figure out this doesn't work? Stop signing old dudes.
  2. Are there any recent examples of front loaded contracts like that? Does anyone actually do that? I see posters suggest it quite often, but I just don't remember seeing anyone recently that's actually done it.
  3. The thing is, Lucroy can make these starters better with his pitch framing. While his bat may decline - I think the pitch framing will improve over time, and Lucroy will "steal" more strikes - so that he knock s what should be a 3.70 ERA to a 3.30. An extension of $12 million a year for Lucroy, who makes a constant influx of young starters better, might very well be the better bargain over the long haul. I think you may be severely over-stating the value of pitch-framing. I know that became a buzz-word around here after Lucroy became suddenly known for it, but it's still somewhat of a subjective analysis, and something I really don't want to see a small market team pay a lot of money for.
  4. McCalvy says Thornburg is coming back up.
  5. I'm pretty happy with how the last 16 or so hours have gone. We've gotten some good players who are just about ready to contribute, and some guys who need a few years (or more) of seasoning with some upside. There was plenty of reason for negativity.... obviously Melvin has shown us in the past that he tends to overplay his hand when selling for prospects, and we have an owner who absolutely didn't want to go into full scale rebuild mode. The fact that we're finally here is kind of a relief, if nothing else.
  6. This sir, made me Laugh. Out. Loud. Kudos to you.
  7. I think .. yeah, that a lot of people get the sense that Melvin is (and always has) been the type of guy to wait, and wait, and wait, and wait to try to get the best deal possible when he's dealing talent for prospects. It's probably bitten him in the ass many times.
  8. Cardinal fans are pretty pissed about this......
  9. See. I actually think they are. ........ sadly.
  10. The hometown discount is almost entirely a myth. Once in a great great while you find that magical unicorn who wants to stay where he's at and is willing to take a paycut to do so, but that's really quite rare. Besides all that, Gomez is approaching 30, and his main skill (speed) is going to take a nosedive really quickly. I want no part of his mega-contract.
  11. I can not show you my art, you could listen to it though. :p
  12. From what I understand, pitchers don't like the 6 day rotation because it messes with their schedule of off-day throwing. If there's anyone who needs innings limited, just take them out of the rotation in September or whatever when they reach a cap that they shouldn't be going beyond.
  13. Terrible trade for the Jays. They have an outside shot at the WC, and Tulo is a home/road split monster. Over his career, he OPS's .135 points higher at home. His splits aren't as bad this year, but generally he splits home/road pretty badly. Also, they're not exactly a 'young' team, so this isn't a move for the future. I don't get it.
  14. It isn't the fact that he attempted the steal...but the fact he didn't have a good jump/lead and had a good chance of getting caught. With DP Lucroy coming up it wasn't the worst idea....but not something you do if have a good chance of getting caught. The rest is laughably overblown because it is Gomez. Well I read his postgame comments and he's like "I wanted to get Davis a good pitch to hit" (paraphrasing), which quite honestly doesn't make any sense. As for the DP, I mean.....I get it, but not hitting into a DP is less a concern than just stupidly running into outs on the bases in the 9th inning. Craig Counsell said (twice) "you cannot get thrown out there". If you're going to go, you ABSOLUTELY can not get thrown out. Gomez is now 7 for 13 on SB attempts this year. Is his speed going already? He's 29, not 39. He's never had good baserunning instincts to begin with, so when he loses a step, he's hosed. I just didn't think he'd be losing a step at 29.
  15. Why is he trying to steal when they're down 2? I really like Carlos, but after 9 years in the bigs, the fact that he still doesn't get some of these baserunning fundamental things is really mind boggling.
  16. There's no possible way to say it better. The Cardinals may be a 'rival', but if they offer the best package, then pull the trigger.
  17. I was at game 1 of the NLDS against the D'Backs. Atmosphere was so amazing there. Obviously can't beat game 5, but still. Game 1 at Miller Park was pretty awesome, when Sexson hit the blast to give the Brewers the lead.
  18. St. Louis and Cincinnati They both finished 2nd in both halves, and both would have won their divisions overall with best records, yet neither of them appeared in post season play. And the exact reason why this is a really bad idea.
  19. Yeah, I'd like to see Lind traded ASAP. It's been great to see him mash, since we haven't had a 1B that can hit the last few years, but we need to sell high on this guy. Since this is the "what do you want to see in the 2nd half" thread...... I want to see a high return on Lind, and see Rodgers or someone else get 60-70 games to get a chance to see if they can be "the guy" for 3-4 years. I don't think Rodgers is that guy, but at least lets find out. Lind WON'T be that guy, because on matter what happens, after next year, he's moving on.
  20. Segura has been "bad" for 2-ish years now. His defense is good, but it's not good enough to overcome his bad offense. His WAR last year was less than 1.0, and it's en route to being that (or around 1.0-ish) again this year. Granted that defensive metrics are somewhat open to interpretation.
  21. Interesting. I have never heard this. Is there a link for this? The only thing I would guess Prince has ever tested high for is elevated levels of nacho cheese sauce and Cheeto residue.
  22. I'd just like to see as many young guys get as much playing time as possible. If that's seeing the old guys who won't be part of the next contender here benched, traded, or released, that's fine. I want to see Cravy and Jungmann getting starts, and see what they do the 2nd time through the league. I'd like to see how Hernan Perez does playing every day. I don't think he's an .800 OPS guy, but I want to see how he holds up. I want to see Sardinas back up and playing every day, or at least 3-4 days a week. Same with Jason Rogers.
  23. I'm not arguing anything. I only pointed out that the handling of the sample did not cause him to get tagged as a positive. Him using PEDS caused him to get tagged as a positive. That's my only point.
  24. This is absolutely false. Braun himself admitted that he used PEDS. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9592788/ryan-braun-milwaukee-brewers-apologizes-ped-use The suspended Milwaukee slugger said he took a cream and a lozenge containing banned substances while rehabilitating an injury. "It was a huge mistake for which I am deeply ashamed and I compounded the situation by not admitting my mistakes immediately," Braun said in a statement released by the Brewers.
