  1. Exactly. He only throws 94-95. If they know it's coming MLB hitters are going to figure it out eventually. If you're at 101 like Chapman, not so much. I don't know why he's shyed away from the slider, it's a very good MLB pitch. On this topic though, since he was starting in the minors. I'd assume he at least used to throw a changeup of some kind but can anyone verify any information on it? Just wondering if he's done it before then maybe it would be easier to add in at least a bit next year. This is the purpose of the whole offseason. He can work the slider and change in, then add a two-seamer.
  2. Could Grisham be an option in center field?
  3. Wait, what? You question Grisham's hit-for-average tool, but give Stokes a pass? Not only is Stokes nine months OLDER than Grisham, his career minor league average is worse. IMO, barring a Grisham-level jump, Stokes may be in danger of losing his 40-man spot this offseason. With the guys the Brewers need to add to avoid rule 5, I think Stokes is a guy who will be dropped. Wilkerson also is a prime candidate. Faria looks like he'll be gone next year because he's out of options. No disagreement on Wilkerson. But Stokes, OTOH, has been improving from a rough start (including two DL stints in April) with very good performance, particularly since the start of July. His hit-for-average tool, while it didn't have the ceiling of Grisham's, has been more consistent over the minor-league career and has a higher floor. He also has options. Ben Gamel is more likely to go, especially if Grisham is for real. An OF position group of Cain-Yelich-Grisham-Stokes is more balanced than Cain-Yelich-Grisham-Gamel. ETA: Tyrone Taylor also is, IMO, more at risk with his track record of injuries. Brewers trade Gamel in the off-season, maybe for a Lind-lite return. Tyrone Taylor DFA. Corey Ray on the 40-man in a "prove it" year.
  4. I have no doubts there will be some bounce-back, but there are steps that could be taken this off-season that could help minimize the slumps. Adding a two-seam fastball, and more use of the slider and change-up would make Hader that much more unhittable.
  5. MLB.com had a good rundown on Hader... and it makes sense. https://www.mlb.com/news/josh-hader-has-a-home-run-problem Some of the problem is this year's baseball. Some of it is a LOT of reliance on the four-seam fastball. It may be too late for this season, but perhaps what Hader needs is to add the two-seam fastball to the four-seam, and to throw the slider and change-up more. The fact is, hitters are sitting on the fastball, and combined with the new ball, the HRs went way up. Hader can't control the ball, but he can control what he throws, when.
  6. I liked his plate discipline just from seeing the numbers, but did worry about the hit-for-average tool. I had Stokes higher than him for the most part in the past. His dominance at AA/AAA, splitting the levels, gave him a two-spot edge in my latest ballot, but.
  7. With all the talk about the starting pitchers, it's also worth taking a look at the position player group. Two big names who have been big bats over the season: 2B/3B Mike Moustakas C/1B Yasmani Grandal Should they both be brought back? It would be very hard to replace either's production over this season. Moustakas is showing 2017 was no fluke. Grandal has been excellent in Miller Park. The likely replacements for Moustakas at third are Travis Shaw (slumped badly this year) and Lucas Erceg (who hasn't put it together). Grandal? Pina/Nottingham/Freitas is a huge step down. How do you keep those two together, and still integrate Grisham and Hiura to the 2020 team?
  8. I think the answer really is, "It depends." With some players, like Hiura, Weeks, and Braun, an extension is arguably a good idea. Other players may be bad risks. like Villar.
  9. I can see how someone would come to that conclusion only by looking at the draft position and production to this point, but I would argue it was more a case of being a disastrous draft to have a high pick in. There seem to be a few nice arms in the mix but I'm not sure 2016 was one of the better drafts of the past 10 years. Ray's had a lot of injuries over two of the last three years. The 2018 Ray was very good. It's also the only year he was healthy.
  10. Going on Lyles this year, and with the Crew last year... I think he may have unlocked something. Giving him a deal on the order of three years (2020-2022) at $4.5 million each, with an option for a fourth at $6 million with a $2 million buyout is cheaper than what Chacin got. As for Gio, I think he is worth a deal in the 3 years, $17.5 million range. Option for a fourth at $8 million, with a $2.5 million buyout. I'd also lock up Pomeranz as a bullpen arm to replace Claudio - 3 years, $9 million. That would give the Crew Locks - Woodruff, Davies, Gio, Anderson Swing - Lyles, Houser, Peralta, Faria Young Guns - Supak, Rasmussen, Roegner, Bettinger, File Questions (injury/otherwise) - Nelson, Burnes, Suter
  11. Yeah, and while we waited for a bargain, Gio went to the Yankees for a few weeks. If we can lock them down - and probably do it for a reasonable cost (say, $4 to $4.5 million per year), I'd do it. We have seen other pitchers (Woodruff, Davies) get hurt. Plus, Chacin will likely walk.
  12. Yep. Counsell has been here for 4.5 years, and one player that I can recall said anything bad about him/management publicly (Tyler Cravy). He's been amazingly supportive and gotten buy in from guys, even if their roles got reduced or they were platooning. Counsell's supremely good at getting far more than the sum of the parts from the 25 players on the roster (well, until rosters expand in September).
  13. We've come a long way from 2002. In 2003, I was grateful because Ned Yost had given the team a new attitude. Yeah, they lost a lot more than they won, but there was a real sense something had changed.
  14. Would like to see the Crew get Patrick Bailey and Hayden Cantrelle. EDIT: And Alex Freeland. Bailey, the switch-hitting catcher ranked 26. Cantrelle, a switch-hitting 2B at 43. Alex Freeland's at 65.
  15. If Shaw is back to form, he's the primary 3B, Moose at SS. If not... there are options. From off the top of my head: 1. Braun 3B, Moose SS 2. Moose 3B, Arcia SS 3. Erceg 3B, Moose SS 4. Moose 3B, Hager SS 5. Moose 3B, Saladino SS
  16. Stokes close to his career OPS after an early season slump. There's a reason I've had him above Ray on most - if not all - of my Top 25 ballots. The guy just... produces. EDIT: I'd compare him to a right-handed Ben Gamel with speed.
  17. Yeah ... another multi-inning reliever that you can trust out there would be a big deal in the very least. It doesn't appear that they are trying to stretch him out to start. This year.
  18. 1. No, he will rebound. It's not a TON of money in this case. There's also NO real option in the minors. Erceg would be worse. Shaw at least has the track record over his career. 2. Yes. He's the primary 1B. 3. Bring both Grandal and Moose back. Grandal would be worth the money on a three-year extension, if only to bridge to Feliciano/Fry. 4. If Moose comes back, and Shaw rebounds to norms, the Crew has a good starting infield offensively. A three-year extension buys time for Turang to arrive from A+. 5. At this point bring back Gio, and open the last slot to one of Houser/Suter/Burnes/Peralta/Supak. 6. Keep the option for Jeffress, but be willing to DFA if he struggles in spring.
  19. I'd try to keep Grandal here - get an extension. There's no better options in the minor league system other than David Fry, who is at full-season A.
  20. The good news: Trent Grisham gets a run in from third with less than two outs. The bad news: It was via a GIDP. The ugly: He doesn't get an RBI. What a ripoff.
  21. It's why Gamel should have been dealt before the deadline.
  22. It's why I kept him relatively high on my Top 25. His past new years, and his .827 OPS in July had me convinced he warranted a mulligan. He did miss time in April... took a while to get back on track, but he should keep a 40-man spot.
