  1. I stumbled upon a Unibroue sampler pack the other day, which is just amazing. I'd never even imagined they'd have such a product, but if you like Belgian-style beers this is quite the find. It has eight bottles, two bottles of La Fin du Monde (their outstanding triple) and then one each of six other beers. Considering what you pay for a 750 ml bottle of Unibroue, this is a great way to familiarize yourself with their beers without getting stuck with a big bottle of something you hate and paid $8 for. So far everything is dynamite. I also finally bought some Duvel. Found it with the nice duvel glass in package. Great beer. I'm just in love with Belgian beer right now, which is kind of unfortunate considering the costs involved. Also, as an aside, while driving home yesterday I wondered why nobody makes a raspberry chocolate stout. The flavors seem tailor made for each other. So I thought you could probably get the same effect by mixing some Young's Double Chocolate Stout with the New Glarus Raspberry Tart. I ran it by my wife and she started drooling. So I'm going to pick some up and try it out. I'll report back on the results after we try it.
  2. Bump for the great article in Time.
  3. I know this isn't the Benjamin Button thread...but I saw it and had to give my two cents. I thought it was a very good movie, but with some editing it could have been great. The movie unfolded so slowly, but I felt like the last hour or so was brilliant. While I was watching it, I felt it was "eh." But I'm thinking about the movie a lot and liking it more the more I think about it.
  4. For what it's worth, the Brewers are soliciting applications for a possible vacancy for their number two radio play-by-play position. My friend works in broadcast and got an email today saying to get his tapes in if interested.
  5. Right now I'm drinking the New Belgium 2 Below Winter Ale. It really reminds me of Fat Tire, especially in regards to the aroma. Very malty, but maybe a bit more complex. Very light for a winter beer. My father-in-law had some Budweiser American Ale. Really not bad at all. Smooth, with a nice mild hop taste and aroma. Finally, the Brooklyn Brewery Black Chocolate Stout. Complex, high in alcohol, not overwhelming with the chocolate taste. It's a very nice cold weather brew, but not one that I could drink a lot of.
  6. Based on the recommendations here I picked up the Goose Island Mild Winter. It's a nice pleasant, malty winter beer. I'm not in love with it, but it's a good beer. The Bell's Christmas Ale was nice too. Maybe not the best Scotch Ale I've had, but again, a pleasant beer. I guess I was expecting more since I'm basically in love with the brewery. I need to drink more Capital beer. The Autumnal Fire is an outstanding fall brew and I've enjoyed petty much everything I've tried from there with the exception of their Pale Ale. Definitely an under-rated brewery.
  7. I went to college there and got stuck driving the length of highway 29 in a blizzard once. Really a nasty drive in a blizzard. 4 hours in nice weather, took me almost double that.
  8. Glen's Meat Market in Watertown has outstanding bacon. They'll slice it as thick or as thin as you want it. I buy a lot of it in the summer for BLT's. Also, I married a Sheboyganite. Her mom's cousin was telling me about his love of bacon in his heavy Sheboygan style accent, so it sounded like "Oh, I luff baaaay-cun."I love the way people talk in Sheboygan. Or I love to make fun of it.
  9. Apparently these jerks don't have to shovel. Really hoping one of the neighbors bails me out with a snowblower.
  10. Both, I've responded to you, thank you for your interest in my career.. I'm going to chalk that comment up to you having a long week... I don't think you see what he just did there.
  11. I don't know what's going on, but I live in Lake Mills and it wasn't bad shoveling this morning. At all. The end of the driveway where the plow came through was heavy, but all in all not bad. Parts of Jefferson County are supposed to see 6-10 inches, but I think we dodged it by us. I work in Cottage Grove, which is a bedroom community to begin with....but it's like a ghost town here this morning. Everyone just stayed in.
  12. Don't buy a sony. Do buy a canon. I'm still upset about the money I wasted on my crappy sony.
  13. I miss sleep. I never realized how much I love sleep until I had a baby. To me four consecutive hours of sleep is almost better than sex.

I need to do more traveling.
  15. My wife and I stayed at The Bailey House in Williams Bay for our first anniversary. http://thebaileyhouse.com/index.php I can't recommend it enough. The home owners were welcoming and very funny. Breakfast was delicious, but the conversation around the breakfast table was even better. We had a beautiful room with a hot tub in it and a fireplace and the price was pretty reasonable. Personally, I wasn't wild about Lake Geneva. It just wasn't my cup of tea. But I loved the Bailey House.
  16. I'll second that. I took the test four years ago. I passed it with a decent enough score that I thought would earn me an interview, but it didn't. When I went for the test there were hundreds of people there and there just aren't many openings. They take all the people who score over a certain number on the test and put them in the hiring pool. I believe they interview those with the highest scores and work down from there. Additionally, certain life experiences get you additional points, so unless you ace the test or you're a veteran, chances are you won't even get a call from the postal service. Edit: As an aside, my uncle is a retired postmaster...personal connections won't get you anywhere.
  17. I always knew when Paul Newman died, I'd be affected by it. I'm usually not affected by the death of actors, but he was a great actor and a great human being and in all honesty he was one of my heroes. My wife asked "Will his spaghetti sauce live on?" I sure hope it does. Edit: Apparently my wife isn't the only one thinking that.
  18. The inability of people on the internet to spell "definitely." There is no "a" in it.
  19. I love that place. So good, so cheap. It's like the quintessential Wisconsin Supper Club. Fishbone's in Delafield is probably my favorite "fancier" resuarant in southern Wisconsin. My wife always chooses it for her birthday. They serve cajun food with an Asian influence. Good stuff, lots of seafood and somewhat reasonable. I also love the Great Dane, more so for the beer than the food like someone else said. Ian's Pizza is another good one in Madison, same with the Weary Traveller. It's a little pretentious for me, but the bad breath burger is hands down the best burger I've ever had.
  20. I'll second that. It was amazing. Also, to the north of Dublin is Newgrange, which they call the world's oldest building. Pretty amazing. There could be a whole thread on all the awesome stuff to see and do in Ireland.
  21. I loved everything I saw in Ireland, but the west coast in particular was gorgeous. Galway is surrounded by some of the most beautiful coastal areas I've ever seen. And Dublin is great. In the states I loved Nashville as far as cities go. The Broadway area is a blast if you're into real deal country music. Other than that, any lake or river in Northern Wisconsin is great.
  22. When I was in college my roommate was in a competition to be the Minnesota Pork Ambassador. He worshiped at the altar of hogs. So I figured, gee I really like beer. Maybe I could be the Wisconsin Beer Ambassador. I've been using that name for about 10 years now. I see some breweries have tried to steal it for their own use.
  23. Check out the Happy Hour at the Brooklyn Brewery if you'll still be in the city Friday evening. They set up picnic tables in the brewery, people order in pizzas or what not. It was pretty cool and the beer is tasty.
  24. Try Kohl's. I saw some at the east Madison store last weekend. I would guess most Kohl's stores have/had them.
