  1. I think it's a limitation on the data available. The only reliable data on income I can see is from the IRS. Taxes are generally but not always filed by household, whether it's a single person or a family with 10 kids. The household income is probably the best indicator of how well the person(s) in the household can live. You can't tell from a married filing jointly return what income each spouse had. You can if W-2 info is available, yet there is joint or individual interest/dividend income, individual pension/IRA-401k distribution income etc. Some people are self-employed, have rental properties, own a business. I don't think you can get reliable individual income in these situations. The wife of the guy who owns the house behind us died a year ago. His sister moved in as well as her adult son. So you probably have 2 single returns and 1 head of household return(he has a disabled adult son) coming from 1 address. I'm thinking this is considered 3 "households" even though it's one address. I think it's just a limitation of the data. You would need address info to adjust for cost of living for each household and I don't know if that's available. You do the best you can with the available data. People can draw their own conclusions about whether the info given is meaningful or not.
  2. "Weren't the charges against Rodriguez dismissed?" "The victim told deputies her relationship with Rodriguez is over and she wants to go back to her home country. She said she is dependent on Rodriguez for money because she has no friends or family in the country, regretted calling 911 and didn't want to pursue the matter further." http://menomoneefalls.patch.com/articles/brewers-pitcher-rodriguez-charged-with-domestic-abuse As I recall she did leave the country to go home. Not exactly a declaration of innocence. The victim was not in a position of strength which is often the case. According to the linked story he was charged with assaulting his father-in-law in NY in 2010.
  3. You absolutely can't wait and pay everything with your tax return. Income tax is pay as you earn and if you under withhold and owe $1000 or more you will have a penalty. There is an exception if you had at least 90% of what you owe withheld or if you had at least as much withheld as the tax owed the previous year. http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc306.html
  4. My son is a junior in college and my daughter a freshman so I've been through the high school years and the college admission process 2 times in recent years. A lot has changed in 25 years. In the fall of my son's junior year in high school I found and started reading and asking questions on this website: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ Your son is only a freshman but it's not too early to start understanding the college admissions process and especially the financial aspects of getting kids through college these days and even starting to implement financial strategies for it.
  5. The high school is interested in letter grades because your son's high school transcript will have a letter grade for each semester of the classes that he completed. The transcript will be sent to the colleges he applies to. Those letter grades are what is used to compute the overall GPA which is also on his transcript. Colleges expect to see letter grades. UW schools generally use unweighted GPA. Some colleges will use weighted, some will have their own procedure for recalculating GPA, taking out Phy Ed, Health, maybe even art and music classes for an academic GPA. But all of them will look at the transcript and see what kind of classes they took, easy ones, lots of honors and APs etc. Often when your son's guidance counselor writes a letter or fills out a form for college admission his senior year they will make a statement or check a box indicating the academic rigor of the student's high school courses. Most rigorous, rigorous etc. which is in comparison to what other students at the high school generally take. Those letters or forms are sent to colleges as part of the admission process. That helps level the playing field for kids who attend small rural schools which may not offer a lot of honors or AP classes.
  6. Yes, it does depend on the player's bargaining power with other teams and your bargaining power with other companies.
  7. Certainly that's the case for the numbers you gave, but that wouldn't be what was discussed in negotiations. The discussion would be $30M over 3 years or something like $50M or $60M or more over 30 years.
  8. Certainly players, agents and teams understand the time value of money and that's included in negotiations when an agreement is reached. So I think saying it hurts players or helps teams is incorrect. It's all been taken into consideration before the player signs. A player and team can negotiate for more later or less earlier and it has the same value, though there may be tax and other considerations that affect the value outside of time value.
  9. Officially the term AP means a class that meets the standards of the college board AP program. Students take standardized tests in the subjects in May which are scored on a 1 to 5 scale. Depending on the college scores of 3,4,5 may result in college credit. The term AP shouldn't really be used if the classes are something else. Taking 4 true AP classes as a freshman is highly unusual, it's hard to imagine a school allowing that. Upon rereading though, you wrote AP prep which sounds like a class to prepare for a later actual AP class. Many schools would just refer to that as honors.
  10. I don't get how they get the numbers in parentheses to begin with. Normally there might be 400 total points for the semester in a class and the kid earns 300 which is 75% and that is a C. And a C is 2 grade points. I don't get where the middle numbers come from. Some schools use + or - like down the right side of your chart, some give 3 grade points whether B-,B,B+. My kids school did the latter. I've never seen more than 4.0 for an A+ though. Do they weight honors and AP classes in addition to that mess you've posted? But there's always cases where a kid misses the next highest grade by a small margin. My kid's school would round up so an 89.50% would be an A- worth 4 grade points while an 89.49% would be a B+ for 3 grade points.
  11. Not even close. Until Saturday night I didn't know who he was.
  12. Being discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=29043 This year only the 5 game series are 2-3 rather than 2-2-1.
  13. 2-2-1 5 game series didn't start until '98 or '99. Before that all 5 game series were 2-3 including 1982 when the Brewers came back from 0-2 to beat the Angels. So this isn't really new in that respect. The thought being the team with the higher seed having 3 home games vs. 2 outweighs having the 1st two on the road. 2-2-1 IMO stacks the deck for the higher seed with both the 1st 2 games at home and having 3 home games. I don't mind 2-3, a higher seeded team ought to be able to take one of the 1st two on the road and it cuts out the extra travel day.
  14. It looked to me like Segura was trying to catch the ball nearer the bag for the quick tag rather than catch it out front and have to bring it back for the tag and just let it get by him.
  15. He missed 2nd base and decided to go back rather than continue and hope the ump didn't see it.
  16. TooLive, it rarely happens but that truly made me laugh out loud.
  17. If I'm not mistaken, they tack on hitless ABs until the minimum threshold is met. If nobody else qualifies at a better average, that person wins the batting title. This is correct, though it is plate appearances, not at-bats. The tack-ons would be ABs.
  18. Greinke, acquired for Double-A right-handers Ariel Pena and Johnny Hellweg, was prevented from becoming the third pitcher in major league history to win 20 consecutive home decisions. Pittsburgh's Ray Kremer won 23 straight from 1926-27 and the Yankees' Lefty Grove had 20 in a row from 1938-41. Greinke's previous home loss was with Kansas City on July 26, 2010, when Minnesota beat the Royals 19-1. "I knew I had a bunch of them in Milwaukee, but I didn't know how many," Greinke said. "It was a pretty lucky streak and a lot of good things happened that were out of my control." http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=320729103
  19. Don't know where you're located but both Appleton and Green Bay have children's museums: http://www.buildingforkids.org/index.php http://www.gbchildrensmuseum.org/ We went to the one in GB once and it was nice but it looks like it has moved. We took the kids to the Appleton one 4 or 5 times and they really enjoyed it. Again, this was in the 90s.
  20. Back in the 90s we started going there, driving 90 miles, every summer for 8 or 9 years. It's a great day for young kids, rides for all ages, have a picnic lunch etc. Most years we stayed overnight and went to the NEW(Northeast Wisconsin) zoo 20 miles or so north of Green Bay. It's a nice sized zoo for younger ones. There's a nice wildlife sanctuary about a 1/4 mile away from the rides at Bay Beach that we always stopped at too. http://www.newzoo.org/ http://www.baybeachwildlife.com/
  21. Either the Kingsmen or Simon and Garfunkel at UW-Oshkosh in fall 1967. I think the Kingsmen were first but not sure.
  22. $13.25M option would be a good enough payday for him if picked up and likely there's a buyout. Agreeing to the option year probably got him a little more in the earlier years. Option years aren't added in a vacuum.
  23. Is there a valid reason why the samples have to be taken after games? Could they be taken before games causing less shipping issues? Players are usually at the park by 3pm for a 7pm game.
  24. In the grand scheme of mlb salaries, managers make so relatively little that having a contract extended a year or two isn't going to get in the way of firing him if it's deemed necessary.
