  1. If Arcia never goes back to the minors, super-two won't happen. He won't have enough service time to be eligible after he completes two full seasons. If he's up and down next year, super-two could happen. Or an extra year of service time could be gained.
  2. The only real strategy is when to expose players. Placing a guy on waivers on the right day can increase his chances of clearing. Of course, that mainly involves making a good guess.
  3. The right turn on red law is fuzzy. Drivers know that you can turn from the right lane into the closest lane, although some gloss over the closest lane thing. What's less known is that it's also OK to turn from the second lane from the right as long as it's a dedicated turn lane. If it's not OK to turn, there'll be a sign saying "No turn on red from left lane." I can see why drivers are fuzzy on that. I wondered if the "No turn on red from left lane" signs were redundant and simply reminders until I encountered a sign saying "No turn on red from left lane between 3PM and 6PM" on the square in Madison. Anyway, a few weeks ago, the state removed the "No turn on red from left lane" sign at the south end of the Lake Parkway where WI-794 continues onto Pennsylvania Avenue. I was mildly annoyed yesterday when the car ahead of me didn't turn, but I was quick to forgive.

  5. Super-two is only about money. The Brewers have that if they want to spend it. The issue is the possibility of extending team control through 2023. Waiting until late April of next year to bring him up would have accomplished that. I echo Toby's statement that the casual fan isn't likely to have heard of him. But I do think that many casual fans understand the concept of the rebuild. I don't think this move has anything directly to do with fans. I think the Brewers are calling him up because they think it's best for his development at this point despite the fact that his hitting hasn't exactly screamed for a promotion. I'd have opted to wait until late April. Or as an option, he could have been given a look-see in September and called up again in May. Either of those scenarios would have given the Brewers the extra year of service.
  6. Tom H. and others are living in the past. Anyone covering baseball professionally should know about the rule change. The rest of us have an excuse. For those who've missed it, the rule changed when the entire world knew for months that Trea Turner was the PTBNL when he was traded to the Nats.
  7. We now know that the player hasn't yet been agreed upon. But had the player been agreed upon, one scenario for not naming a PTBNL now could be that the team acquiring him might not currently have a roster spot for him.
  8. Why? Please review the post (& responses of others).. I'm not sure which post to review, but I don't believe a PTBNL can be on a team's 40-man roster.
  9. It seems like there used to be more of a gentlemen's agreement to let non-obvious players slide through, but that doesn't seem to be the case as much anymore. I think the Diamondbacks disposed of the gentleman's agreement after the 1998 expansion.
  10. I'm not sure that Carter and Thornburg would clear waivers. I would think it'd be tougher to get guys through if they were controllable and relatively inexpensive.
  11. I have a feeling the people hating this deal will be looking pretty stupid in a couple years. I would think that anyone hating the deal would be very happy to end up looking stupid.
  12. It was symptoms caused by epilepsy that hadn't been diagnosed. I think the doctors finally figured out what was going on when he was with the Jays organization.
  13. Players can switch around positions as much as the manager wishes, just not their place in the batting order. With the exclusion of the designated hitter. And pitchers are limited as topper09er explains. Actually, the only positions defined in the rules are pitcher, catcher, and DH. I also have vague memories of Trebelhorn using a 5 man infield. Does anyone else remember this? Are you thinking of something beyond the 5-man infield we see teams employ several times per season for specific game situations?
  14. The problem is that the reports all qualify as hearsay, which makes them one or more steps away from getting the information from the horse's mouth. Usually, we have the benefit of direct quotes from key participants to work with. But in this case, there was nothing until we got to the vague statements made during the damage control phase.
  15. I am not sure that there really is anyone to blame here. We can blame whoever leaked news of the trade. The Brewers, Indians, and Lucroy camps followed procedures appropriately.
  16. It's happened in my lifetime, but I don't recall the circumstances. Players can't re-enter the game except under limited circumstances in the All-Star Game.

  21. Yeah, the cap logo was a little much. They switched it out for a simpler one during the last part of the uniform's lifespan.
  22. Keon has been productive over the past couple of days. I think he's been sent up and down so much that he's forgotten that he's in the Majors. I'm not fond of these uniforms. Using them on an occasional retro night is cool, but I don't want to see them very often.
