  1. The answer to the trivia question is Larry Hisle (first Brewer to get a hit in the All Star Game).
  2. They spend like they are all in… Kind of. But after signing Greinke, payroll restrictions kept them from continuing to spend a little more to beef up the fringes of the roster. Yeah, I'd be concerned too. Between the baseball operation and ownership, there seems to be no direction. A team needs to commit to a plan and stick to it. If your plan is "all in," you need to be willing to expand the payroll a bit beyond your initial budget.
  3. That's not really clear. TV came back from commercials, and the review was in progress. The issue is that it occurred at the end of the inning, and that's where the umps are inconsistent about enforcing the 30-second rule. Had it not been the third out, Anderson would have likely thrown another pitch, negating the opportunity to challenge. With the third out, the part that sucks is that everyone's in the dugout, and using BA's words, the players are in "shutdown mode."
  4. This is the third time Gennett didn't keep his foot on second when attempting to turn a double play. The results of the review were correct. Still, the challenge needs to occur within 30 seconds to comply with the rules.

  6. If a guy is handed a base on a silver platter, even if it's Bartolo Colón, he should steal it. In other words, I'd never say never. Almost never? Yeah, I can go with that. If there's a question, I'd want to risk to be something less than the 15-18% that Adam mentions. Maybe more like 5-10%. I think the score and inning come into play too.
  7. Urías is an unusual case. He needs to be kept under 115 innings. When he was called up, everyone knew from the get-go that being optioned was likely.
  8. Michael Wacha came awfully close to being run over by the sausages when he trotted out to the mound to warm up for the bottom of the 6th. Did the TV broadcast happen to mention that?
  9. A better solution would of been to Davies on the 7 day DL. He gets service time and gets paid. Except for concussions, the MLB DL requires a 15 day stay. I don't think you could invent a concussion. There's a lot of protocol involved because of the concerns they cause.
  10. The rule that says that a player is to stay down for 10 days would cover most situations like this. But in this case, we have the oddity that Zach won't be needed for those days. I would hope that Zach doesn't miss out on the opportunity to have some days off to do whatever he wants. Most players get four days, and those who participate in the game get two (unless the game is postponed until Wednesday).

  12. In an era where the blogosphere refers to players as "pieces," it can be easy to forget that.
  13. I just don't get why the Brewers think A and AA guys mean anything?? If you want to sustain a run, you need good players from the top of the system to the bottom. Guys in Class A aren't part of the first wave of prospects, but they're part of the next one. You need to plan for that too. Also, in the early stages of a rebuild, the idea is to increase the overall talent in the organization. You can be flexible about where it goes.
  14. Lee16 picked the right team. Here's the Hill trade thread: Aaron Hill traded to Boston Red Sox for RHP Aaron Wilkerson & INF Wendell Rijo
  15. It does suck, and it's something that shouldn't be done routinely. But the Middlebrooks situation was an extenuating circumstance in this case, and it made more sense to demote Davies rather than a pitcher who could be used in a game.
  16. Here's a story: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/385877991.html
  17. My IP is back to the locale where it belongs. Like the switch to California, I didn't to anything to cause this. And yeah, the Kansas City airport is strange.
  18. No. I believe they offer full college expenses to all of their draft picks. Not sure how or why it doesn't count against the pool, but it doesn't. Maybe because it's a contingent "bonus"? Or maybe MLB doesn't want to tax education. I think it's standard operating procedure for all draft picks with all teams. Given that, there'd be no reason to tax when everyone's providing the same benefit. College expenses weren't the part of the system that was inequitable. I read recently that there are some strings attached, something like going full time and in consecutive semesters, I believe.
  19. This sums it up in terms that the layman can understand:
  20. Pretty cool. A double-steal that included Gennett stealing home.
  21. Don't the days toward burning an option start on Opening Day? That would be the same time that players start accumulating service time.
