  1. I mentioned last night that ads might appear briefly sometime today, but I know that post wasn't very visible. The ads should be gone now.
  2. If you don't see the difference in personal culpability I'm sorry. This crosses the condescension line. "There's a difference in personal culpability here" would have worked fine.
  3. We have a designated Yost thread for general Nedly commentary. When posting to this thread, please address the trivia question posted in the lead.
  4. Saturday evening, the sports anchor on channel 4 said, "expecially."
  5. Well, the question you didn't ask was, "What's the latest a manager has ever been fired by a team still trying to make the playoffs?" EDIT: I see you beat me to it by less than a minute. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. I think this one has been tied by a lot of people because I believe it's happened a lot. As an example, the Brewers' Del Crandall was fired with a game to go in the 1975 season. (Harvey Kuenn replaced him for the final game.)
  7. Yuku replaced the ezBoard fund-raising system with a system where pricing is based on the size of individual donations. Brian opted for the personal paypal route so we could pool our donations toward the largest possible discount. It's possible that in the future, Yuku might offer a fundraising system where individual contributions within a short period would be discounted at the same rate as if a single member had made the donation. A staff member has "specced this up," but management has placed it on the back burner. So, yes, we can open things up so members can contribute directly to Yuku, but Brewerfan opted to try a different route this time around. If we were to go the "pay Yuku directly" route, it would be via PayPal anyway. One wouldn't need a PayPal account to do make a payment; PayPal simply handles the funds. I'm no PayPal expert, but I think the same holds true in this case. As far as I know, one should be able to send funds to Brian without starting up a PayPal account. The difference would be that you'd have to enter more information. As far as splitting the payment into two portions, we shouldn't be hurt enough by this for it to matter. The discount would drop by a less than a percentage point. Some sample discounts: $66 ... 26.66667% $126 ... 30.00000% $252 ... 31.70732% $504 ... 32.53012% $1,002 ... 32.93173% $2,004 ... 33.13313% $4,008 ... 33.23338% $8,016 ... 33.28340% $80,160 ... 33.32834% $801,600 ... 33.33283%
  8. Pass me some of that Kool-Aid. That totally crosses the condescension line. Postseason2006, if you can't post anything other than daily suckiness updates, leave this thread alone. Otherwise, one of the mods will need to issue a strike.
  9. It's not too late to donate. Brian is planning on making a payment now and another payment after checks roll in. Note that ads may show up in posts at some point tomorrow (Monday). That's a side effect of switching payment systems, and it should only happen for a very brief period. (We're moving from the ezBoard system to the Yuku large board system.) If ads show up for any more than a brief period, we can have Yuku staff "kick start" the switchover. They occasionally have to do that for boards. Note that if we're seeing ads, we're not paying for anything; page views with Yuku-generated ads are free. I can't answer the suicide hotline question. mothershipconnection is in charge of that.
  10. You're right -- Maybe I am forgetting the context in which the graphic was presented, or any qualifiers. In either case, it's been awhile. I saw the graphic, too, and I don't think you're forgetting anything. Nobody made it clear that the information in the graphic was on a sport-by-sport basis.
  11. That's not my understanding of the rule. All broadcast rules are as clear as mud. I do know that it's been recent practice for teams who typically play on Sunday nights (Rangers, Marlins) to be able to broadcast their games. I see no WGN broadcast here in Milwaukee. I tuned in to check and found Newhart instead. I wouldn't be surprised if WGN were carrying the game in the Cubs' market, though.
  12. This thread is hereby designated. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. Kinda like a lot of us felt after this: http://www.photofile.info/images/web/AA/GG/AAGG033.jpg
  14. I believe this Miller Park arrangement had to be "signed off" by the commissioner's office, the players' association, the Cubs, and the Astros. I don't think it's a great situation for the Cubs (or for that matter, the White Sox and maybe even the Twins) to be the visiting team in Miller Park as a "neutral" site, but I guess this was the least of several evils.
  15. where did the old Yost thread go? It hadn't been posted to for a month, so it was locked, and it became part of a "no designated Yost thread" experiment. Quoth the Designated threads list: Right now, this thread looks more like vent thraed material than anything else. But if it helps to re-designate a thread to consolidate the bulk of the Yost-centric discussion, we'll go that route. It might be better to start over, though.
  16. I'm not sure how this can be, I thought ESPN had exclusivity. Maybe there is an exemption for make-up games that were originally scheduled to be televised? I think the rule allows for in-market telecasts but precludes these telecasts from being pumped out over Extra Innings.
  17. Tom is a Phillies announcer. Their broadcasts are never carried on Extra Innings. It's too bad we don't get to see more of him.
  18. As far as firewalls go, I like ZoneAlarm, too. There's a free version and a paid version, but both are bundled in the same download. If you choose to pay at some point, you get the extra features. Also, you can use the paid version for 15 days, then revert to the free version. I remember reading way back when that setup is easier that way. I can't testify to that fact personally, though, as I've always set it up the "paid" way. If I remember correctly, the paid version may also provide spyware protection. You'll definitely need spyware real-time protection and cleanup capability. You may already have Windows Defender on your system; I believe it does both. I can't tell you how good I think it is because I've never tried it. For spyware cleanup, I like AdAware. The free version cleans and scans; the paid version will also provide real-time protection. For real-time protection, I recently installed Spybot-Search & Destroy on my neighbor's computer. I haven't gotten a "review" from them yet. This one relies on Registry changes, doesn't use system resources, and doesn't conflict with other real-time protection. The main thing to note with spyware protection and anti-virus protection is to run only one of each for real-time protection (excluding Spybot-Search & Destroy). These programs don't work and play well with each other. You can run scans with any number of these programs. They might spot stuff stashed in another program's "quarantine" folder. That's normal behavior. You might be able to set these apps to avoid reporting on those folders. Someone can probably do much better with this topic than I can. I use a Mac, so I don't have Windows in front of me to be able to verify what I'm saying quite as well as I'd like.
  19. good for Mark A's pocket book I'm betting it's mostly the Houston Astros' pocket book, which would be as it should be.
  20. I'd suggest AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. Consider that McAfee Security Center might also be providing your spyware and firewall protection. You might want to expand this thread to include options for covering those needs.
  21. Al and I covered that above (replies 51ish and 54ish). MLB made sure the Brewers didn't lose money, and the teams actually playing are entitled to money--if there is any money.
  22. http://blogs.jsonline.com...oming-to-miller-park.aspx That's 2007, Tom. Revenue. I image the Astros will get a larger percentage than the Cubs. The brewers probably will get something to cover expenses. The Astros should technically get whatever percentage of the revenue the home team is entitled to, and the Cubs should technically get whatever percentage the visiting team is entitled to. But in reality, there probably isn't going to be much revenue to be had. For the Indians-Angels series, the main financial objective was to make sure the Brewers didn't lose money. MLB would have pitched in to ensure that.
  23. I wouldn't care so much if it just wasn't so excessive. Strike out? Booed. Coming into pitch? Booed. Give up a run, double booed. Exactly. Fans are booing way beyond the call of duty. It's almost as if they don't realize that a batter "failing" over 66% of the time and a pitcher "failing" nearly 34% of the time is par for the course--and that some of those "failures" being lumped together is part of the program. Booing the home team should be reserved for times that cumulative hideousness is taken to the extreme. If the Brewers give up five walks, six earned runs, and go through three pitching changes in an inning, go ahead and boo. But booing what's basically routine and booing a player immediately when he takes the mound makes it embarrassing to refer to these people as fellow fans. I think there's way too much booing of the visiting team at Miller Park, too. Booing former Brewers just because they're former Brewers? Come on. On the other side of the coin, there are a few select cases where booing is fine: booing the ump, booing the opponent for intentionally walking the home team's batter, booing the manager for removing a successful starting pitcher (even if you know he's right http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif). Specifically, regarding Corey Hart, I'm betting he said what he said because Haudricourt asked him the question. If that's the case, maybe we should be admiring his candidness. I don't think we should be assuming that he ran to Tom with the purpose of whining. Also, I think one always has to assume that when a quote is published, part of it has been cut out. The press tends to do that. As far as the message board comparison goes, one thing Brewerfan.net and Miller Park have in common is that they're not meant to be places to go for the purpose of venting frustration.
  24. Here's the Adam McCalvy link lcbj68c refers to: Miller Park could host Cubs-Astros set I agree with Mark Loretta. This is a horrible idea all around. If the teams are going to play in Miller Park, they may as well play at Wrigley.
  25. my bank's not set up for that now and they gave me a hissy fit when I tried to deposit an advertising dividend check of $2.18. Considering my neighbor had trouble cashing "to the family of..." checks when his wife died, that's not a surprise at all.
