  1. I guess I was under the impression that a team in a postseason hunt didn't load up their bench, not that I am against it. The tougher call comes when the team's minor league affiliate happens to be in its league's playoffs. While the major league team's needs are definitely more important, it doesn't want to screw over the minor league team, either.
  2. Please try to be clearer about citing a source. Many members might not be familiar with "nsbb," and when I poked around northsidebaseball.com, I didn't immediately find this tidbit. Also, links are nice when they're available. Here's an AP article, though: Cubs' ace Zambrano scratched with tired arm
  3. I think the simplest answer is that the Pirates are crowded out by geography. If the Pirates were to move to the East, I don't know which team I'd move out to accommodate them. If the Marlins ever moved to a new city outside of the Eastern time zone, I'd bet that Pittsburgh would replace them in that division.
  4. Check out Hernandez El Sarape Restaurante in Delavan.
  5. There were several things going on at the time. The Royals had expressed mild interest in moving to the National League. They were granted the first spot in line to volunteer for a switch. Selig was extremely concerned about the perception of conflict of interest if the Brewers switched, and there was no way they were going to the NL unless the Royals declined. As far as the Texas teams go, Selig promised George W. Bush that he'd try to get the Rangers moved out of the American League West. Bush sold the team to Tom Hicks. Hicks said he'd be fine with staying in the AL West as long as his team could play annual home and home series with the Astros. Moving the Astros to the AL West was a suggestion made in a book by Bob Costas. He felt that realigning the one team and going with two 15-team leagues was the way to go.
  6. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia were in the same division from 1969-1993. Given that there were only five spots available in the NL East when realigning to three divisions, I'd have to think that geography was the overriding factor in splitting them up. As far as the Texas teams go, I'd think that if a divisional move were being considered, MLB would want whatever the Astros and Rangers want.
  7. There's a bit of discussion of the Branyan injury in the 3B thread. The problem is that we're relying on a Trenni report that several of us saw but none of us really remember in detail. The bottom line, however, is that it isn't good.
  8. As it doesn't rely on a key, this territory map might be easier to read.
  9. Jeff Cirillo say O-P-S, R-I-S-P most important stats I halfway agree R-I-S-P not useful O-P-S is cool
  10. I love how the facts trickle out and that I can't find anything definitive on Time Warner's Wisconsin website. I did find this Ohio link. Of course, the channels won't match up, but I'd think what we get in Wisconsin ought to be comparable. How close is this for the Milwaukee area? Analog: channel 63 Digital: channel 192 maybe, plus an alternate HD: channel 527 eventually
  11. Again, if you don't like what we have to say, go back to the Cubs board. Please don't post statements like that.
  12. The last I heard was Branyan's injury was significant enough that he wasn't able to do anything baseball-related at all. I think this came from a Trenni report.
  13. Market size is based on boundaries defined by Nielsen Media Research. Of course, there's the added factor of media markets in the vicinity of the "main" market. The Madison and Green Bay markets, for instance, would be part of Brewers territory, but aren't part of the "market size."
  14. Playing it "by the book" is the safest way to protect your behind. Also, for whatever reason, people involved with baseball don't take kindly to new ways of thinking or doing things. That chapter of 'the book' is less than 20 years old. For whatever reason, managers picked up on it quickly when it was written. It's time to tear out those pages.
  15. As far as I can remember, the Brewerfan/LambeauLeap default settings are something that's never been discussed, either among the mods or the members. 20 posts per thread page and 20 threads per forum page happen to be Yuku's defaults. I had always figured that if the subject came up, we could change these default settings based on members telling us different numbers would be more convenient, but I never thought of it in terms of cost. It's certainly a factor to consider. After all, funds do come from the membership. Now that we can jump to the first new message in a thread, finding the newest post is less of a factor than it would have been before. Of course, we wouldn't want to blow out dialup members. But I can tell you that I have dialup at home, and I'm set to 30 posts per thread page and 40 threads per forum page. I find 30 posts per page to be a decent number. I don't notice extra load time, and it saves me the hassle of waiting for more click-throughs. Picture-laden threads can be a hassle no matter how many posts per page one is at, but that's just the nature of the beast. A higher number of threads per forum page wouldn't affect cost: we only pay for page views on thread pages. It might be more convenient, however, not to have to click as often to go back a couple of days. By the way, I know that a handful of members would choose to view 1,000 posts per thread page if that setting were available. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Just to make sure everything is straight, I should point out this error in Yuku's announcement. Actually, non-Supporters see the number of topic/replies per page set by each board. It happens that Brewerfan and LambeauLeap are set to 20/20 anyway, though. We still have the option at the board level to change the number of topics or replies that members see. With Yuku Supporter, members can override those settings within their account preferences.
  17. As of last night (I guess), you now need Yuku Supporter to be able to adjust the topics/replies per page preference on an account by account basis: New Supporter Feature: Number of Topics and Replies Per Page Setting This came without warning, which is annoying. But even so, Yuku Supporter is a good deal, both for the member and for Brewerfan. Are you sure you're seeing 25 of each per page? Brewerfan's defaults are set at 20 and the announcement says you should be seeing 20.
  18. Trenni talked about the Durham 'day to day' thing during the game.
  19. If this team wins 96 games, it'll surpass both the 1979 and 1982 records. If it wins 95 games, it'll almost certainly play the full 162-game slate, leaving 1979 as the season with the best W-L percentage. Here's the team W-L history.
  20. Norway is in Michigan, right? The town of Norway is in Racine County, bordering on Muskego and extending to near Franklin.
  21. Hey gang, there are way too many nested quotes in this thread. Please take a look at the quote guidelines.
  22. Per Brewerfan's political discussion guidelines, let's move away from the discussion of food stamps unless it can be applied to something like rude behavior at the checkout.
  23. I'm with Bikeage on this one. Cell phone etiquette--or lack thereof-- far and away trumps anything else that happens at the checkout counter. People shouldn't be on the phone while checking out... period.
  24. Brewerfan likes to discourage daily posting of stuff that can be easily looked up, but since the Journal Sentinel has the attendance wrong again, I guess this stops qualifying as stuff that can easily be looked up. 2008 total... 2,423,208 (64 dates, average: 37,863) As Al pointed out earlier, last year's attendance is probably wrong, too.
