  1. Gobias' brief mention is perfectly appropriate. However, let's use the Fielder contract thread if anyone wishes to debate the Fielder issue.
  2. I can't recommend a printer because I'm mad at both HP and Lexmark, and they're the two most recent purchases I've been involved with. Neither is a printer quality issue, though. HP wanted to charge $30-plus to tell me if an older printer could go wireless and Lexmark took until January to come up with a Leopard driver for a new printer. But I'll highly recommend the concept of going wireless. The only wire coming out of my dad's iMac is the one that supplies electrical power. That's unbelievably convenient.
  3. Wouldn't crushing those pitches be a direct result of his patience? Studies show that higher contact rates generally mean more weak contact, and that higher OBPs and SLG pcts. tend to result in lower contact rates.
  4. One of the first things Ryan talked about when he stormed out of the gate last year was the fact that he wasn't satisfied: he wasn't being patient and drawing his walks. It definitely sounds like he isn't content to rest on his laurels.
  5. I think The Book came up with that number by using a pitcher and 8 equal average hitters rather than an average #1, an average #2, etc. As I mentioned, though, my copy of The Book is 200 miles away right now. For sure. The problem is coming up with 25 to 30 extra runs that way, though. That simply seems to be too much of a stretch considering the statistical work that's been done in recent years.
  6. He's just really matter of fact when he speaks. When he makes a statement like that, there's never a smack-talkin' tone in his voice. He knows what he wants to say and says it without any "ums" or "you knows".
  7. I found a better Mac for $27,200, but it only had 32 GB of RAM. I'd rather have yottabytes.
  8. Not too long ago, I went over to Apple's site and managed to put together a Mac Pro system for about $19,000. I'd recommend that setup.
  9. I've also encountered those covers that make the seat fall down. And as hawing says, cleanliness comes to mind, too. The third issue is that they love to pop off when you try to slip them over the seat back. Spending two to four minutes trying to get one of those to stay on is a major annoyance. My dad has three of those things. I think my mom left them to him in her will. She was an excellent housekeeper, though, so you could safely disregard the cleanliness issue. Anyway, I've instituted a system that balances practicality and honors my mom's apparent like for those things: The one for my dad's master bath is washed and in the closet. It only has to come out if he really thinks guests he wants to impress might see that bathroom. That'll happen approximately never. The one for the main floor guest bathroom (that's always clean and only used by guests) has the cover in place. I'm the most frequent upstairs bathroom guest. The cover goes in the closet when I'm the only one visiting. When I leave, the bathroom is cleaned and the cover goes back on.
  10. If there were a compelling case to add LaPorta to the 40-man before September, fine. If there's temptation to call him up in September just to be here, save the roster spot for flexibility over the winter.
  11. I'm getting the impression that Ned is heading in this direction: #2 Cameron #3 Braun #4 Fielder I'm afraid of whoever he might choose to hit #2 while Cameron is out of the lineup. And as logan3825 said in the Pujols thread, it does seem odd that a manager would be considering the #9 thing without also considering the #3 thing. Here's what I'd do whether the pitcher is hitting ninth or not: #2 Braun #3 Cameron #4 Braun And until the suspension is over: #2 Braun #3 Whoever #4 Fielder
  12. Thanks, slobberknocker. I've added your information to the thread at Support.
  13. One rule of thumb with every waiver/transaction FAQ on the web: some little tidbit is likely to be incomplete or wrong. I'm sure this guy checked this out and that the basic gist of the rule is stated correctly, but it's possible that he could have missed a detail. It's also possible that other teams, knowing that they would have had to work out a trade to get Rickie anyway, didn't bother to file a claim simply to block him from being optioned.
  14. I believe it's less than that if you test with a lineup including a pitcher and 8 equal 'typical' players. I can't go further than that, either, because my copy of "The Book" is 200 miles away. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  15. Adding to what JJ says above, AAA innings tend to be easier because the competition isn't as good. That's an advantage when you're trying to preserve an arm. Exactly. You can't rely on spring training box score stats to be able to tell how well a player is doing. But you can certainly use stats like velocity. It's an obscure rule applying to players who've been in the big leagues for a while. See the Death, Taxes, and Major League Waivers article in the Transaction Forum FAQ. Interestingly, however, the article says a player needs to go through revocable waivers if it's been three calendar years since his first appearance in the majors. It's curious that it wasn't an issue when Weeks was sent down last year. (Maybe he sneaked through?) While I've been supporting the concept of Parra starting the year in Nashville, I guess I wouldn't have a problem if he began the year in Milwaukee as Gallardo's replacement, then went to Nashville after that.
  16. The general idea is that you gain a slight advantage by hitting a 'regular' guy 9th and the pitcher 8th. But there should also be some statistical analysis using Kendall vs. what can be expected from current Brewer pitchers. It looks like the Brewers have done that, although I question whether the difference would be as much as 25-30 runs. There's a post (from Sam, I think) way back in the beginning of this thread that I find compelling, though. Kendall has a pedestrian batting average and a lousy slugging percentage, but he does seem to be able to walk. It seems to me that having those walks ahead of the top of the order would be quite useful--probably more useful than they'd be in front of the pitcher. Note: some of the recent quotes in this thread (in posts entitled "Split from Rosenthal thread") come from this article.
  17. I've moved some posts to the Designated Lineup Thread.
  18. #2 is your third best hitter If you take another look, I believe The Book has the #2 hitter ranked right up there with #4. It gets a bit confusing because it has a lot of "The Book says" boxes, and some of them conflict. You kind have to get into the paragraphs, and once you've done that, draw some conclusions on your own. I believe it mentioned qualitative factors for determining which hitter would go in each of those spots: walks for #2 and extra base hits for #4. That would seem to suggest that the Brewers might want Fielder at #2 and Braun at #4. Fielder has the definite walk edge and they're pretty close in extra base hits. I think the bottom line, though, is that no team is going to have a complement of players that match up exactly to the descriptions in The Book, and that we can be a bit flexible. If someone wants to use protection as the reason to bat Fielder #2 and Braun #4, I'm fine with that. If someone else wants to use speed to bat Braun #2 and Fielder #4, I'm fine with that, too. And if another person's gut says that Prince is a prototypical cleanup hitter and defaults Braun into #2 on that basis, I'm also fine with that. Basically, I believe the bottom line is that one of those guys should bat #2 and the other should bat #4. If that happens, even if you disagree with the explanation behind it, you're still getting a good thing.
  19. Technically, RBI is an initialism, but it can also be considered an acronym if you're defining the term broadly. (The stricter definition of acronym requires that the set of letters be pronounceable, e.g. SCUBA.) Anagrams are words or phrases that can be rearranged into other words or phrases by reusing each letter only once: George Bush = He bugs Gore Arab = A bar Paris = Pairs Whether or not you use an apostrophe before the s in RBIs is another subject of debate. Because we're dealing with a plural, English is moving away from using an apostrophe in cases like this.
  20. Kind of like Bill Schroeder and his boat, or all those local guys pimping Good Feet Store, or the hoards of WTMJ personalities doing testimonials on various products and services around town.
  21. At least with coffee, we can't really tell what's in the cup. For all we know, he could be drinking rum and coke.
  22. I like Mark's comments, too, especially this part: "We need to continue to look at what we're doing to make sure it's fair." I don't think the Brewers did wrong by applying their scale, but I do think Prince deserved more money and that he exposed a flaw in the system.
  23. If any Safari users out there have a minute, please take a look at this thread in the Yuku Bugs Forum: Many Safari issues The issue I'm concerned about is the one about the dropdown menus at the bottom of the forum pages. It's odd because they seem to work under some circumstances, but not others. I believe the other issues mentioned in the lead post have been addressed. If Safari users could chime in either in this thread or the one I've linked to, it'll help developers track down the problem. [Note: if you post over there, please don't rant; just report the facts. Yuku Support has seen its share of 'behavior' problems recently. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif]
