  1. That's funny after the gushing that went on over the supposed small ball success in the game they won with 2 hits, which actually had nothing to do with small ball it was just about balls...as in taking 4 of them for a walk nine times. Maybe Melvin told Sveum to knock off the bunting or he'd be fired http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.
  2. If all the tickets are sold, how can the brewers website still say... Purchase a 20-Game Ticket Plan for 2009 and secure the opportunity to purchase (1) NLDS and (1) NLCS game played at Miller Park. (Number of tickets for 2008 Postseason equal to number of 2009 deposits. Limit of 4.) Just curious, I'm planning to watch the games on TV...
  3. I do think it's unfortunate some of the things I've heard less knowledgeable fans say about Ben the last few weeks. It is really sad that the guy pitched his arm off for this team this year and he seems to get little credit from the fans for it. Yes, the last few games of the season are important, but without Ben Sheets performing as he did in April-June is this team even a position to compete for the wild card at the end of the season? Without Sheets in April-June does the team do well enough to motivate the owner to go and get CC for the 2nd half?
  4. I'm sure Sheets will be off for the NLDS. Don't know if there is any realistic chance that he recovers in the next week, but if he did and the team makes it to the NLCS, he would be on that roster. What about Joe Dillon, instead of Gwynn for the 4th outfielder?
  5. Melvin appears to be #1 on that list. Is there any question that he disagreed with the decision after his subdued reaction yesterday? I won't be surprised if Melvin leaves the Brewers after the (post) season and the reason is because he was forced to fire Yost with 12 games to go in the season. I completely agree that the real problem was that management let the problem linger too long before doing something about it, making the timing more akward and I also suspect that it was Melvin who pushed Mark A. to keep giving Yost more chances.
  6. I assume because they are showing 3 games. It could have been 12:30. Personally, I'm glad to have this schedule rather than the 9:30 and 10 pm starts the Cubs get on Thursday and Saturday.
  7. I wouldn't mind seeing Eric Gagne coming full-circle and reclaiming the closer role in today's game... Before I knew Sveum was going to stick with CC, I said I'd rather see Gagne out there than Torres for the 9th. I really hope Sveum just goes without a designated closer. If McClung comes in in the 7th inning and is doing as well as he has recently, just leave him in for the 8th and 9th, even if they have a lead of 3 or less. If they need to get a lefthander out in the 9th, don't hesitate to go to Shouse for that, even if the lead is 3 or less runs. Etc.
  8. I ran across this site when someone mentioned in a post on the brewers.com fan forum. I soon discovered that this one is just a littlehttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif better than that one, which I now rarely visit. Thanks to all those who keep it going. http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/113.gif
  9. I think that'd be a nice gesture, if he is interested in being there.
  10. http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/24.gif
  11. While the collapse was disappointing, at least they will be either the last in or the last to be eliminated...at least in the NL. With there now being a 50% chance of another game tomorrow, I'm just wondering what the game time would be, do I have to take some time off or will it be a night game?
  12. http://milwaukee.brewers....mp;fext=.jsp&c_id=mil So was the coaching staff and Sveum unaware of this, or does being the designated "closer" trump doing whatever gives the team the best chance to win?
  13. Was there really booing? Watching on TV, I thought he got a small ovation when leaving...at least from the fans that could be seen near the dugout. Booing a guy who gave a it a shot while hurt is pretty pathetic. We have all been disappointed by his injury history, but it's not like he wants to be injured. Clearly he is a guy who wants to pitch, when he is healthy he never wants to come out of the game. Does Sheets get booed next year, if he pitches in Miller Park for another team?
  14. We know the rules. Once a pinch-runner touches a base he's in the game whether he's put in or not. Hmm...do the rules allow a pinch runner to take over at first base on a home run?
  15. I would also say...though its very early, its looking like I may like how he handles pitchers better than Ned, but I'll dislike his offensive strategy. Overall, I think I'd take that tradeoff as long as the bunting and running into outs is not too overdone. I don't want to see JJ Hardy bunting very often and I never want to see that happen with 2 strikes again.
  16. Looks like 75% is about right, look near the bottom at this link: http://www.hardballtimes....e/not-so-sweet-surrender/ where he comes up with sacrifices were successful 76.2% of the time in 2005. Note that he also comes up with a 32% success rate for bunting with two strikes. So having Hardy attempt that was a very poor strategy, despite the fact that it happened to be successful. BTW, the only except from The Book:... that I have been able to find just had a chapter preview: http://www.insidethebook.com/c09.shtml
  17. I was thinking the same thing...I don't think I want Braun, with 2 strikes, to become equivalent to Counsell or Kendall.
  18. Yeah, it's like a bench clearing brawl with their own teammates. The last two days, I was thinking "take it easy, don't hurt Prince/Braun" when they went crazy after the walkoffs.
  19. Can't blame Pinella for not wanting his guys to get hurt by playing in rain. Brewers had their chances to beat the Mets, etc. and have this wild card thing locked up...they did not get it done.
  20. Maybe that was true, but he changed his mind after Yost was fired http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I think the salary problem is that it is not just $25 million (or whatever) for 2009, it is $25 million per year for each of the next 5-6 years. If he really likes it here, perhaps there will be a small discount if his other alternatives are not appealing...for example, maybe he'd take $23 million per year to play here over $25 million to play for a team like the Dodgers, with their reportedly unhappy clubhouse. He probably turned down Cleveland because he wants to hit http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.
  21. It seems like the failures of small ball are mostly ignored. Perhaps this is why it gets more support than it deserves? Last night's 10th inning and the grand slam would likely not have occurred had Cory Hart not run into an out on the bases earlier in the game. Our TV announcers who have been gushing...essentially over one successful bunt, never saw fit to mention this failure just like they seem to not notice bunts that turn into double plays or fail by some other mode. Are there any statistics on how often bunt attempts fail? If so do these even account for cases where someone bunts foul twice and then the bunt is taken off and the hitter starts his real at bat with 2 strikes. If there are not good stats and we get stuck with "small-ball Sveum" next season, perhaps there should be an official thread to document small ball failures.
  22. And this situation, right now......tied at 1 in the 4th innings.....1st and 2nd nobody out.....why not bunt to advance the runners? The run expectancy goes down, very slighty (1.53 to 1.43), with runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out from 1st and 2nd with nobody out... Does this assume a 100% success rate for bunting? The last 2 games the Brewers have bunted into 2 double plays in 4 bunt attempts and one other bunt failed as well.
