  1. What was political? The beer snobery? http://www.hey-guess-what.com/HumorColumn/archives/beer-snobs.htm
  2. From aerial views here: http://www.virtualbirdseye.com/2008/04/13/houston-astros-minute-maid-park-aerial-view/ it sure does not seem like space constraints were an issue. In any case they had the option to just not stick those "Crawford box" seats there add add some additional seats elsewhere (CF, for example). As someone else posted, it is not so much the 315 down the line that is the problem, it is that it is ridiculously short (what is it maybe 325 or 330 ft) across most of left, until the wall suddenly drops back 362.
  3. Of course things could have changed during the season, but this article from December implies the exact opposite with regard to the clubhouse atmosphere in Milwaukee: Houston also had interest in Gagne, but Boras apparently preferred to steer his client toward Milwaukee, which fell just two games short of winning the National League Central crown last season. Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder is represented by Boras and has told him how much he enjoys playing for the Brewers, and how close the players are in the clubhouse. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=694614
  4. They seem to screw up most when they throw it too soft to first base. Not sure why they sometimes seem to think that they have to make lolly-pop throws to first.
  5. But did he have to hit the #3 batter, just because Braun bats 3rd?
  6. The question was why not a defensive substitution for the 8th and 9th to try to hold a lead, even when Kapler was not going to bat again or was unlikely to.
  7. And if they don't make the playoffs any time in the next few years?
  8. So would Bill Hall rather ride the bench 3/4 of the time as the right-handed 3rd baseman only, or would he rather get a bit more playing time by filling in at 2nd and SS as needed and thereby also get the opportunity to prove to Yost that he can still hit right-handers?
  9. Ned says says otherwise... Yost denied the chatter circulating in Brewer Nation that Colorado would not have scored five runs in the eighth inning Friday had he put Mike Cameron in center as a defensive replacement..."Kapler is a fine defender," Yost said. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=759697 Of course the question is not whether Kapler is a "fine" defender or not, it is whether he has as much range as Cameron. It's also not about whether or not those paticular plays could have been made, it is whether or not there are some plays that Cameron could make but Kapler has no chance at.
  10. He seemed to do a lot of contradicting of Yost in today's newspaper column... Despite statistical evidence to the contrary, Brewers manager Ned Yost said Saturday he still believes reliever Guillermo Mota is his best option in the eighth inning with a lead. He (Mota) also has been getting tagged by left-handed hitters (.366 average), yet Yost let him face Todd Helton, who crushed an RBI double off the center-field wall. The reliever Yost removed from the game in favor of Mota, Carlos Villanueva, is holding left-handed hitters to a .216 batting average this season. etc. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=759697
  11. Has the manager or anyone looked for reasons? Do the guys go out partying all night on the road? Do they not sleep well on the road? What would it cost to fly back and forth from home every day, that might be the only way this team ever makes the playoffs.
  12. I don't see a single comment to that effect here http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif. Whohas indicated that they hope for a lousy road trip? Predictions and hopes are two different things. I get a laugh out of the many who let the euphoria of a good home stand convince them that this will be a winning road trip. (and I hope that I come to regret making this comment http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif) valpocrewsader: Lose a game they should have won http://office.microsoft.com/global/images/default.aspx?AssetID=ZA011179361033
  13. "Mota's been our eighth-inning pitcher the majority of the year," said Yost. "We went to our eighth-inning pitcher." Idiotic. But is this just Yost or have most managers extended the idiocy of the "closer" usage formula to the 8th inning? These formulas seem like a good way for the manager to dodge blame for decisions in individual games. "Hey, it's not my fault, our 8th inning guy just did not do his job".
  14. Still and all that would leave various statements regarding getting on top the ball and whether or not the ball is "carrying". (I've never understood how one hits a fly ball after "getting on top" of a pitch)
  15. Maybe ask Bill S http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif, since he has reported the percent of runs scored via HR from time to time. Last year, I was annoyed by his constant harping on the evil of "relying too much on the HR" and the bliss of "manufacturing runs". What I did when comparing was just add up the runs from HR based team splits for HR in each situation...bases empty, one on, two on, bases loaded. I'm not sure about using percentages, as what if team A has scored a total of 300 runs and 150 were via HR, while team B has scored 200 runs and 50 were via the HR. Both teams scored 150 runs without the benefit of a HR, but team A scored 50% via the HR and team B only 25%. I think (hope) even Bill S, would expect team A to have the better record. I think you would somehow need to normalize things based on total runs scored, if the question is does a team win less often when they rely on the HR (even though they score just as many runs as another team that does not rely on the HR). Or is the question really: Do teams that rely "too much" on the HR tend to score fewer total runs?
  16. They never seem to play well anywhere but Milwaukee...oh and now apparently Chicago. The post-home stand euphoria makes me hope for 4-2. But, the Brewer's history on the road makes me think that, instead, they'll stay true to form and go 2-4.
  17. For Saturday night games they found that 6:00 was also a good balance. It allowed people to have the whole day to do stuff and the games end early enough to be able to go out and do stuff after the game. Yeah, "do stuff"...like get home and go to bed for some of us old peoplehttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif. We mostly prefer day games the few times that we actually go, the 6 pm starts are the only night games we'd ever want to go to as we do not like to be out late. I think before they went to 6 PM on Saturday, they used to start night games at 6:30 in April for some reason.
  18. I don't know that this is the case. I think many of the more critical comments are from those who never were fans of Bill Hall. Others of us, such as myself, have pointed out that this is not just about Hall. The Brewers happen to have Branyon and just had to find a way to get him in the line-up considering his current level of performance. I like Bill Hall and understand his frustration and don't blame him at all for wanting what he wants. But he also should recognize that the team has to do all it can to win NOW. I think it would be better had he said something like: "I'd like to go somewhere where I can play one position all the time. At the same time I do understand the Brewers desire to find a way to get Russell some at bats. I have no one but myself to blame for my poor performance against right handers so far this season, I think it is a short-term abberation and I am confident that I will turn that around if given the opportunity... " He might even add, privately to Yost, that he'd be happy to play SS on Hardy's days off and 2b on Weeks' in order to get some more opportunities to turn things around vs. RH pitching. They just have to have Branyon and Fielder in the lin-up against righties and those two can. I believe, really only play 3rd and 1st. I think there would be a lot of love shown for Bill Hall were he to make comments such at these. I do think he is at bottom clearly a team player, as he has been right there to congratulating Russell after a successful at bat.
  19. I have no idea how significant a difference of 14 is...is that a 50% difference like their RBI numbers? I think looking at RBIs and trying to infer some kind of production/clutch skill from it is silly In isolation, probably...but maybe it would mean something if you looked at the percentage of runners they drive in. Just look at their overall production (BA/OBP/SLG), as far as I am concerned. If those stats for a player show a large variation, say, between batting with men on base and bases empty, I don't think that is meaningless.
  20. Lately they seem to be unable to have a consistent sound level. I don't know if it is Brian A. or the FSN sound production, but half the time when he starts speaking in is initially louder and then after a couple words is quieter.
  21. With who? I think, the platoon for Hall has as much or more to do with the Brewers happening to have Branyon as it does with Hall. Bill Hall is just unlucky in that Branyon happens to live in Nashville, since that is apparently the only reason Branyon signed a minor league contract with the Brewers.
  22. I feel better now, thanks Davey. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  23. Braun has 42 RBI. What's the next excuse...Prince can't get 'em because Braun has already batted them in? Anyway, Prince finally seems to be showing signs of power again...hopefully this continues.
  24. But isn't it odd that it always seem to be put the opposite way by Yost? Seems like he is always saying, and being quoted as saying, that he needs to get playing time for the subs, instead of saying the starters need an occassional day off.
  25. I can't see why Yost would not go with Hall at SS and Counsel at 2b, if he wants both Weeks and Hardy to have a day off. This also gives Hall a chance to improve his trade value by showing he can play SS and hit right handers.
