  1. Ratterree definitely seems to have found a groove and is settling into a solid year.
  2. Maybe we should start the pool now for which franchise records Braun will finish with and which will remain in Yount's hands? Yount will certainly keep the hit crown (barring an absolutely amazing run on the back half of Braun's contract).
  3. Well certainly after the beating they have taken they merit more credit for finding guys who can pitch. But so many players are pitching better than they have in the past across the minors it seems like there should be more to the story than things started clicking for all of these guys at the same time.
  4. At some point it has to be more than just good luck on the pitching side right? I'd really be curious to know if there was some kind of philosophical, or practical change on the coaching side that explains, so many positive results.
  5. Would drafting Pentecost seal an offseason position switch for Coulter?
  6. Another Davis walk, his May OPS is over .830, and almost identical to his entire major league career average at this point. Even for a LF that is a pretty good level of production in 2014.
  7. Well at minimum wage and all of the commission he has earned over the years I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for him to field a team of guys.
  8. I'm not opposed to trading a pitcher, but our depth is not something to be quickly traded away just because. I'd even buy that Nelson replacing Estrada would improve the rotation. Injuries are too hard to predict though to make the move until you can value for either the prospect or the relatively cheap back end starter. Teams are always willing to add those guys during the stretch.
  9. Let's keep in mind that Nelson is starting because one of our starters went down, no reason to be in a big hurry to get rid of effective ones. I would be surprised if Garza doesn't get hot for a month or something and bring things closer in line to his career numbers.
  10. I'll argue the middle position, namely that in the not so distant past Beltre is exactly the kind of guy that GMs would have over paid for in prospects. Given his advanced age an somewhat decreased production (still not bad especially with the high quality defense) I think he is a guy you could relatively under pay for in terms of prospects or younger players (i.e. we would not have to give up 1 of our top 3 prospects). I'd peg him as being about a 4 WAR player going forward, maybe 3 depending on how fast his bat recedes. I think there is a lot of similarity to what we did with Aramis. Everyone else got scared by the age and we got him for reasonable value. Putting him into a health platoon with Reynolds at first while upgrading the 3rd base defense helps the team out a fair bit (more time for Reynolds on the bench is a nice upgrade there as well).
  11. I don't think its good to obsess about only 1 option to improve first base. It is also instructive to look around at the stats of first basemen for other non contenders (and many contenders for that matter). Getting a platoon partner that can reliably post a .750 or greater OPS this year is a challenge. My thought experiment would be how fast can the Brewers sign Morales? I'm curious about the possibility of what amounts to a pre-draft deal that is announced after the 1st pick has been made?
  12. Joey 'takes too many pitches' Votto also gets obsessively criticized. If the throw is slightly worse, and Gomez scores on an infield single or passball then his horrible 'gaffe' wins the game. It's not like he was thrown out by a lot.
  13. Now that we have a list we can critique our performance. I think Ariel Pena is too high. You need to be able to find the strike zone by time you get to AAA in your mid 20's. Every once in awhile a guy like that figures it out super late, but I'd rather take a less toolsy guy who is performing well at AAA or AA like our catchers or a younger guy with the tools like Magnifico or Jose Pena. My biggest sign for improvement in the system is that I can point to a number of players outside the top 20 that I think have solid cases for moving up, but there are not a lot of good arguments for moving guys in the top 20 out.
  14. Taylor is still pitching I wonder if it was a travel issue for him tonight?
  15. There is something to be said for the fact that in a sea of bad options at first the Brewers could have had so far this year, at least they haven't had to pay a lot for disappointment.
  16. If only the Brewers draft scouts had the success of the radio talent scouts....
  17. It is no longer 1997, it is a lot closer to 1987 in terms of run environment and that is absolutely huge. an .800 OPS gets you to the top 6 of league qualifiers at 2nd base this year and top 7 of SS as one handy way of looking at the context. I'm having more difficulty getting current overall league averages, but it has dropped a ton from even 5 years ago. Average defense and a .700 OPS for a middle infielder though is pretty close to average production. So while yes we have some guys not hitting, there is a lot of that going around
  18. They didn't protect him because he was in A-ball, so they made the same kind of calculated choices teams make all the time in the Rule 5 draft. It's an upside play. Teams on average tend to be more likely to go for the not quite AAAA bench fodder types historically. And most other teams game plan accordingly.
  19. One important thing to consider is that Scooter is relatively light (but not too light) in the power and patience department. He is never going to be a great walker or major power threat, but he is still young enough that he could grow more in both areas. Part of the play you are making with Scooter is that he is OK and cheap now, and has a chance to be better than that.
  20. Stat head trends, say BB/ HR guys only age poorly Scouts say large men age poorly The only pro argument for Fielder is sentiment. Compared to what we have now I'm sure he'd be an upgrade for a year. I agree that Beltre could make more sense on the short term side.
  21. If you go with the 'twinge' plan you only need him to stick around another month, then he can ride the DL for a month before going on a 'rehab' assignment for a month to wrap up the minor league season and then he is back up in September where he can hang out as roster expand and then send him to the AFL. Not the best season for his development, but less of a loss than many of our prior top draft picks.
  22. I'm not convinced either Halton or Morris would post significantly better OBP's. Halton probably could out do Reynolds, but not enough to make up for the power gap. As for Morris he is barely OPSing over .800 with little in the way of a walk rate, so while he'd have a fair shot at out OPSing Overbay based on power it is not a slam dunk.
  23. 1. Nelson 2. Taylor 3. Coulter 4. Arcia 5. Tyler Cravy 6. Taylor Jungman 7. Mitch Haniger 8. Micheal Reed 9. Jorge Lopez 10. Hobbs Johnson 11. Devin Williams 12. Jed Bradley 13. Damien Magnifico 14. Victor Roache 15. Nick Delmonico 16. Adam Weisenburg 17. Shawn Zarraga 18. David Denson 19. Micheal Rattertree 20. Chris McFarland Next Five: Hunter Morris, Nick Ramirez, Tucker Nehaus, Cameron Garfield, Jose Pena I tend to weight actual production at AA and above higher than some, but I am also very cautious about big stat lines from guys repeating a level. On the tools side ceiling and positional scarcity are important. Hence Morris while having solid production again has pretty much shown himself to be topping out as a platoon first basemen with an acceptable glove. Handy, but less useful in my mind than a guy like Zarraga who can be a bench option at catcher and 1st and maybe even more yet.
  24. I certainly agree that they will try to do something, I just hope they aim big. I'm not interested in selling the farm but we do have a little bit of that pitching depth and I'd happily trade that for a true middle of the order bat at first for the next few years.
  25. I get being a little conservative on the promotions as things could easily snowball into having to release a vet who was performing, and it is just as easy for what appears to be a problem of too much depth to turn into not enough bodies fast, but you do need to try and get some of those stalled timetables moving now that they are finally producing.
