  1. Khris Davis begins his campaign today to become THE Khris Davis in MLB.
  2. Some of the crunch so far has been caused by having such a healthy spring.
  3. I wonder when the idea first came up.
  4. Looks nice on paper, but put me firmly in the camp that highly doubts these tweaks to the suspension lengths have any substantial affects on usage rates, and that going higher serves any purpose other than chest thumping. The length of the suspension was already equivalent to a major injury with the pay loss and revenue loss. The threat exists and will have whatever deterrent effect it will have. The downside of going to high is that you only increase the likelihood of extremely negative behaviors to avoid getting caught (i.e. people definitely behave extra stupid when they have nothing to lose).
  5. Playing on Saturday for a chance to get to the Final Four. Good times, good times
  6. Given the nature of the draft it is easy to go back and say if only we had taken ... But most of those are examples of guys later in the draft developing unexpectedly. I'm looking for examples where the team right ahead of us took a player off the board that we would have likely taken instead without needing to benefit from hindsight. There have been rumblings from the beginning that the Brewers would have gone with Trout if he had just lasted, not merely disappointment after he made the majors. It is kind of a specific question, but I find it far more interesting to look at cases where things could have easily turned out just a bit different and had big effects. I'd be interested if anybody had examples where we had done it to someone else.
  7. Definitely soft, Overbay has shown nothing to justify a lot of playing time.
  8. Fair enough, I figured Proxmire was more history than politics at this point.
  9. Defense could be a valid reason to make the call for Overbay, but his recent performance and age combined with Juan's good spring really strain that possibility.
  10. If someone is going to inquire about money spent of researching squirrels it needs to be said that the throw away version of that statement shows Rosenthal's incredible ignorance. I do not know if the dollar value is remotely accurate or not, but the way in which the accusation is leveled is just plain wrong.I'll skip the attempts at polish and go straight for the pertinent facts on confronting the 'waste' myth (created for political purposes largely by WI own Bob Proxmire). The current fund rates on grant applications to the federal governments largest 2 sources (defense is separate) are right around 10%. That means only the 10% best as judged by qualified reviewers are getting funded. The second key fact is that major scientific research often focuses of species or other oddities that are not immediately obvious, in the case of genetics for example fruit flies pile up millions upon millions of research dollars which seems trivial unless you realize that most of what we learned about genetics that does make it into high school biology was learned between 1900-1950 as a result of fruit fly research, and as a result the fly is often the key to continued understanding of all sorts of things in modern research. I'm happy to go off topic with something lengthier if there is interest.
  11. The following question applies only to 1st round picks, after that regardless of sport there is to much randomness for it to be a truly poignant what could have been. So in honor of the release of Arnett's release and every reasonable belief that the Brewers would have taken Trout had he lasted that one more pick. Does he manage to take the crown for biggest almost is Wisconsin sports history from Tony Mandarich? Or is there another candidate, not just on the bust side but when a vastly better player was right there or almost right there and would have been taken.
  12. Age and performance all point towards a high risk of a complete blow-up so I see no reason under almost any team philosophy to extend him. The QO route if he goes well has validity as would trading him.
  13. I'm inclined to agree Haniger's athleticism lets his bat play up in terms of upside. If there was reason to believe he'd likely end up as an above average defensive 1st basemen as well that would make it an interesting possibility, but his bat is merely good and there just isn't that much separation on pure hitting at this moment from the other guys. Even if he has a good year this year it's not like there has to be a spot for him next year right away. With that much time there are a whole bunch of ways that letting him stay in the OF maximizes his value to us, not just in general. Just to throw out some fun ones. Davis could establish himself as a Matt Stairs type which is pretty good these days, but not so good we'd necessarily want to bet the house on him aging well, so he could be dealt while still relatively inexpensive for other shiny pieces. Braun might yet end up at first in an attempt to minimize wear and tear.
  14. I haven't looked at the schedule, but are there enough off days to go a pitcher short to begin with in April? Green might work at SS in a pinch, but a plan that gives Segura no option for an offday doesn't seem like much of a plan. On injury alone I like going in with a bigger bench for a couple of weeks to see if something happens on our end that requires a reshuffling of the deck, or hopefully second base sorts itself out clearly.
  15. I don't watch at this point and haven't for years, though I find these threads oddly appealing to read. Given the level of pushback about Bryan maybe they are setting up for an epic switch around. At this point no one is expecting them to do anything different and give Bryan his shot. He could suddenly force the issue as the next Stone Cold...
  16. Any independent verification of this or context would be good as well. They've done that with other prospects to have them work on other pitches.
  17. supply and demand is bunk there is a vast over supply of people qualified to work on boards and be CEOs, the social part of these jobs artificially lowers the pool. There is a whole host of real factors at play in the baseball case that break every assumption required for the simple supply and demand model to actually apply to this situation. For example there are only 30 MLB teams far less than the infinite number required by the supply and demand mathematics
  18. They are workers they deserve a minimum wage. Unless we want to start paying CEOs less than minimum wage because they are living their dream as well.
  19. It absolutely is a great move because the compensation has already lowered the prices on these guys relative to everyone else. If you've got the pockets to do it, these mini binges are absolutely a great strategy every once in awhile. The value of second and third round draft picks really isn't that much compared to paying for already known talent.
  20. Some concern is warranted given that as much as it is possible that a number of the position guys take big steps forward, they might not. And while some of them could survive a down year, stagnation from a guy like Roache, D'vo, and Coulter really knocks the upside luster off them. At that point the farm would start to look an awful lot like the Kevin Barker years. At some point the Brewers do need to generate top level guys again to be competitive in out years.
  21. I don't think there is much point in getting him as an OF, trying to come up with something off the wall and creative only makes sense if you think he can and will convert to 1st base. He might be willing with the injuries. If he is even moderately healthy he projects as a 4 WAR guy compared to the collection of 1 WAR options we have. That is worth quite a bit to us this season, and I'd certainly deal some prospects for that done right I certainly don't think it would hamstring us in the next couple of seasons either.
  22. Anybody think Kemp could play first base after today's little news story?
  23. Come to think of it, I bet Cirillo v3 next year would crush Yuni v3
  24. I would be curious to see a historical work-up on DR prospects by ranking similar to what we have for draft prospects. I'm not completely sold that all of the eggs in one high end basket approach is better than grabbing 3 or 4 guys lower down the list. With the international signing restrictions this is likely the true trade-off not this guy versus a mid-roster filler FA. That said he certainly sounds exciting.
  25. The Pecota numbers seem about right overall to me. As a fan I'm slightly more optimistic, but slightly ahead of the Pirates actually sounds right, and just a little behind the Reds works. There is definitely some upside potential, but things could also go sideways again in a number of ways.
