  1. I hadn't thought about, but Davis might actually bring back something pretty good. The guy lit it up last year, and if he keeps the current pace up or anywhere close he looks like a young All-star level bat. Given the preference for young guys it is not unreasonable to think you might find someone who is very interested in rolling the dice a bit to see where exactly he shakes out. That said moving Braun to RF seems like a pretty simple way to get that same talent on the field for us everyday. I'd explore dealing Aoki and Weeks for either a super young guy or a player who would be a better roster fit off the bench. A better reserve middle infielder would be very handy. Maybe if there is a starter or reliever with a very big contract for a year to swap with Weeks? Bring back Hart and scour free agency for pitching value options.
  2. I think Scooter's defense is a pretty important part of the conversation at this point. Based on past reports I was inclined to say it wouldn't be much different than Weeks. However if Scooter is a more reliably average defender than Rickie ever was that's a decent point in his favor. Not a huge difference in all likelihood, but judging defenders who are in the average range is difficult unless you can get clearer side by side comparisons. So for those who have seen a lot of Scooter this year I'm curious how they think he compares. I'm also aware that people might easily convince themselves more out of Weeks spite than Scooter's play that Scooter is a better defender.
  3. There has been a lot to keep an eye on for the Wisconsin box scores, particularly here in the second half. However no one there seems to have clearly broken out in a way that has removed all the questions except for when will they be starting for the Brewers. Taylor has stabilized in August, Roache is doing alright but has cooled off from July. Cooper has done fairly well. Arcia has been trending upward, but even for a SS the OPS is still pretty mediocre. I'm not down on any of these guys, in fact I'm fairly excited. I'm posting to think out loud about whether or not having as extreme of a pitcher's park as Brevard is going to help these guys. It is one thing for us to apply adjustments to the stats and try to eyeball the effects, but are you going to tell me that Haniger feels like he had a great year after he went from lighting it up with Wisconsin to an OPS in the .700's?
  4. It seems like there should be a joke about how only in Wisconsin would people pay $20 for $10 of free beer.
  5. About the only reason I could see at this point for not calling up Heckathorn, would be that there might be so many healthy guys in September that there would be no innings. That said it is nice to get something out of a high draft pick even if it is a bullpen arm.
  6. The batting average is fantastic, and this is clearly the best slash line year D'Vo has ever had, but that is also a big part of the danger with promoting him. Even for a CF if his batting average dropped down to a respectable .280 after promotion his secondary stats are pretty weak and his line would look pretty uninspiring. I'd hope that he could keep working on developing those parts of his game for the rest of the season, get that little breather and see how it translates in the Fall League.
  7. I haven't been this excited about a batting average (D'Vo is up to .353) since the Hurricane.
  8. The hit rate outside the 1st round is pretty low well below 50% and certainly worth keeping in mind when evaluating that strategy. I suspect the bigger problem will be not having enough money in the budget to sign a player who would rate that highly. That said if there was a Lohse quality starter available at the same price that might look pretty interesting.
  9. I haven't looked through his minor league numbers but prior to coming here, Fransisco had about a full season of major league ABs spread over 4 seasons so a noticeable improvement is not that far out of the question. Seemingly about the only thing Doug did wrong was not getting him for sooner. Here's to hoping it's not just a flash in the pan.
  10. Wasn't he in a Styx video...
  11. The crazy part of that line is that he has more HRs now in the majors than his 300+ AAA ABs this year. The other side of that is that his 2 doubles wouldn't project out to even 20 for a full season. It is way more exciting to watch him do well than flail away. I'm not looking for him to even be an above average hitter (though that would be nice). If he can keep the batting average in the .280 range, play average defense and have enough power to SLG .400 he's a pretty solid option. It's worth noting that if Scooter was posting say an .800 OPS in AAA this year, one could make a pretty decent case that once you account for the pitcher friendly nature of A+ and AA he had actually been pretty consistently the same guy making adjustments for each level, instead of a player whose line dropped each level. His combined line for the year right now a .281/ .326/ .402. I could live with that for sure.
  12. Not sold on Fransisco just yet, but for all the concern about offense at the position he has posted that solid line for us. His overall line for the year is a little less stellar, but what Doug has seen has been pretty worthwhile (particularly for the cost). If they become convinced that he has started to develop closer to his potential, it's kind of hard to make an argument for any of the other current options drastically out performing an .827 OPS. It's not impossible, but they all have question marks that would make projecting more than that rather optimistic. That said I still have a feeling Hart comes back as an attempt at insurance.
  13. I doubt many would be surprised if Gamel managed to have a great season, but even for guys with a major league track record 2 consecutive years off produces a lot of questions. When you combine that with Gamel having never gotten over that hump to showing he can do it in the majors it becomes a lot to keep hoping when there are other guys who have a much better chance of producing some value.
  14. More D'vo goodness already. I did a quick calculation and check after his first AB double. His OPS with that double included would rank him 8th in the league if he had enough PAs to qualify. Even moreso given that Brevard might be the biggest pitcher's park in the league
  15. Stepping back from the indulgence there does seem to be a decent chance that 1 of these various OFers will end up playing first base. Perhaps not, but most of the ways you slice it we have a lot guys athletic enough to play a high quality CF. There is a strong appeal to stacking the OF with plus defenders who can also hit. Realistically probably only 2/3 I listed ever play together and Braun, Davis, or Roache probably grab the other spot leaving someone to move on and someone to get shifted to 1st. Though there's probalby only a 1/3 chance of all of that happening with injuries, trades, development and a number of other prospects to consider. Still that's not exactly a wildly optimistic scenario either.
  16. Getting a lot of those guys experience this year could be an asset for the next few years, no there wasn't a lot of star power in the group but a lot of guys who could be useful. Whether it is legitimately difficult to get over the hump or caused by bad luck in small sample sizes those types of players seem to have a higher degree of difficulty catching on. Now they can be used more in their intended role as complements with more of the star power coming back. Is that enough for optimism? I'll stick with my 20% playoff chance from earlier posts. They ought to be interesting. And the up the middle group of players is fun to watch. Peralta has ups and downs, but he looks like he will be a useful pitcher for awhile.
  17. Let's all indulge the thought of a Gomez, Taylor, D'vo OF in a couple of years.
  18. It's definitely nice to see Scooter off to such a good start. I'm a doubter in the sense that his AAA line had slowly sunk down that he didn't seem ready for another jump without the possibility of him putting up a lower OPS than Rickie, but I more than happy to be wrong on that front. It's nice to see most of the young guys holding their own at this point.
  19. Not sure why you think the framing research is laughable. The results are repeatable year to year, they are consistent in terms of identifying catchers who were identified as good framers prior to the methodology, and framing has long been a skill talked about by baseball men. About the only thing surprising about the research has been the magnitude of the effect for the best catchers.
  20. I doubt he'd get a lot out of 3 weeks of AA. You want him to feel successful probably at this point, so I'd keep him at A+ and if he continues to outpeform his previous lines try and get him into the Fall league for a challenge.
  21. Any potential cancer risk is raw speculation, it was intended only as a plausible example. It is entirely possible that HGH supplementation done correctly may benefit health, but we are a long way away from being sure that is true and that we know the optimal level. There are rarely any freebies when it comes to health. Almost all of the lifespan increase has been driven by eliminating obvious diseases of malnutrition, but mostly infections disease prevention by better public sanitation and vaccines. Most medicine on the other hand is given knowing that in that situation the benefits outweigh the side effects. A simple correlation of HGH levels with youth is only enough at best to entertain future research. You could easily obtain almost identical correlations with height, and conclude we need to get shorter. We know that is the aging process many things go awry, things not closely related to regulation by HGH as far as I'm aware. Similarly cancer is a disease that takes years to develop (hence it's relative absence in youth except in unusual cases) anything that speeds the growth of cells could potentially accelerate the development of a cancer at a general theoretical level hence why I used it as an example.
  22. How interesting, does that apply to 10 and 5 rights as well?
  23. The guy who scouted Segura wants his cut of that money.
  24. My understanding is that in that case no he could not block it, since it is not a trade.
