  1. Hart's absences are also completely consistent with him being used in covert operations missions, from his previously undisclosed recruitment into ROTC during college. Any photographs of him in camouflage or black outfits would only add fuel to this fire. Let's not just make up stuff that is vaguely consistent with the evidence.
  2. Particularly in light of how guys on the bubble seem to be suffering this year in FA it is hard to see Hart having much of a market next offseason if he comes along with having to give up the draft pick. This is different than thinking there is no interest. Perhaps more importantly I do not think the long term health of the franchise is remotely dependent on getting back talent value for Hart. Developing our young starters, and not getting stuck with a bad multi-year contract to a declining player are way more important. Gamel and Morris and Crush Davis on some level all have shots here's to hoping one of them grabs the opportunity.
  3. Having seen TH's many years of projected rosters I'd say they reflect his bias for players moreso than the list itself by a long shot. The tenor of the team also plays a roll. Back when we stunk it was all rookies now not so much
  4. I'd put Tyrone Taylor and even Nelson in that category of could develop into a really top level prospect as well. Not necessarily likely, but if Taylor keeps hitting outside of the Pioneer league anywhere close to what he did last year he's going to shoot through the roof as a prospect with that athleticism. Nelson it's getting that control back to make him look like a Kevin Brown clone.
  5. Depth is a competitive advantage it is unlikely that Maldonado would bring back a guy who would actually be a step up for us somewhere else considering salary. In the meantime we might have the best catching position in baseball.
  6. Short of robbing another team blind in a trade this has been about the best offseason I could imagine. Find a bunch of decent lower cost bets to plug the bullpen holes and maintain the flexibility to cycle through all of the young pitchers we have to figure out what works. All while maintaining a solid base of position players. In a very good position for Doug to react to how the season goes and make adjustments rather than over committing one way or another.
  7. If the defense is still there and Gomez has a year similar to last to prove he really has truly developed he would certainly look pretty close to a qualifying offer type player.
  8. I can see why there is a push to get another vet in the rotation, but it really seems to be a little more straight forward to let the youth playout and focus on adding some quality bullpen arms. Having 3-4 young cheap rotation arms goes along way to keeping the team very affordable and in contention for years.
  9. Holding Hart for the remainder of his contract is not the worst strategy. Trading him may or may not yield good value give age contract size and position. I agree that getting similar production out of any one prospect is not as easy as some make it sound, but given the number of options we have someone will probably perform as well and maybe even better. Given the age and experience though that is less likely for this upcoming year, than over the long run.
  10. Can't argue with picking up a number of guys fairly cheaply when it comes to bullpens and see what happens.
  11. That Fangraphs data is about of a clear cut of an argument as possible against extending Hart. It's painful, but given where his K rate is already adding 2-3% over the next two years pretty much completely wipes out his value. The magnitude to which tall players suffer more contact problems than other players is quite astounding.
  12. Find as many hard throwers as possible and see what sticks. I have yet to see a better bullpen strategy other than draft Mariano Rivera and that ship sailed awhile ago.
  13. Axford with the clutch 9th to keep the record in the doable category.
  14. The problem is that while Green might not see a lot of playing time if Ramirez goes down it would not be much fun to try and patch over that with a converted SS. Maybe if it was more than a courtesy deal and we actually received something useful in return I'd be OK with that gamble, but we've already sat on Gamel longer, so I'd hold onto Green.
  15. I'm intentionally trying to take this a different direction. After years of not being able to develop more than 1 starter a decade, and the odd bullpen arm or two we've had young guys bust out as rookie's or near rookies like never before. Fiers, Rogers, and Estrada all did it long enough in the majors to be beyond flukes (which doesn't mean there might not be regression) even Peralta is suddenly looking dialed in. It's crazy, awesome and at least as much fun as watching Braun, Prince and Weeks crush everything insight.
  16. If we had swept Philly they actually be 6 behind us right now, it the whole they lose ground and we gain it at the same time thing that happens with head to head match ups.
  17. topper's method is probably the most accurate way to estimate how likely these long shots are. At first glance there seems to be a lot of big comebacks, just realize that every season there are 15-20 teams that are in a position for a long shot comeback. The probability of any particular team doing it is small, but you have to multiply that by all the teams that fade out to get the real chance of it happening per season. Things are interesting right now, but its hard not to think about losing that extra inning game to the Cards, we'd only be 2 games back!
  18. My Mohu seems to work fairly well and has fairly little digitizing. For the relative cost I've been pretty happy, I have some issues because the houses are packed closely together partially blocking some of the TV stations (I can get all of them, just not in the same antenna position). If you can swing it an outdoor mounted antenna might be the way to go.
  19. Pittsburg lost too. Crazy that we are almost back to .500. They could catch Pittsburg before next weekend now, and really be in the race.
  20. Time is certainly not on Gamel's side, but there is plenty of room on the roster for him if he can be the hitter he has always projected to be. His ceiling has always looked a lot like the line that Aramis has put up this year, which would almost certainly more than make-up for any defensive advantage Aoki would have. Even more moderate expectations of say an .800 OPS that is still a great guy to be able to mix and match.
  21. Not super impressed with that list. The scouting/ ceiling gap between Nelson and Bradley is not nearly big enough to justify having Bradley that far ahead based on this years performance. Similarly Schafer looks like a nice guy to have around, but Nelson did OK at AA, and has a much bigger ceiling while Logan had a solid year. I could keep going but the ranking don't make a lot of sense if you rate by tools, and they don't make a lot of sense if you favor performance either.
  22. If Estrada, Rogers, and Fiers are all viable even exciting guys to have in the rotation next year does it mean the curse is over, we can develop starting pitching?
  23. One could argue that it would only be karma to come from wayback and knock the Cards out this year. Still very unlikely, but even after dealing Greinke it is nice to see the team play more like what we should be able to expect next year.
  24. Considering the sell off and injuries still only being 8 under now kind of reinforces the idea that the team isn't that bad.
