  1. I'd certainly rather have the one skill be hitting for average, but I think the skepticism can best be summed up as he needs to improve at least a little in these other areas to let the average play. The knock on the low power guys is always that after a certain point guys just go right after them. Usually this hits their walk rates, in Gennetts case he needs to be a true .300 hitter to support his current secondary skills, and those guys are pretty rare, particularly when their isn't power, exceptional speed, or a good eye to support it. He's shown enough to make me think he has a decent shot at doing it, but I could also see him hitting a pretty empty .280-.290, which isn't exciting anywhere other than off the bench.
  2. After years of waiting for a high tools high risk athlete to pan out, this is nice.
  3. All part of the master plan to frustrate the Pirates even more
  4. Burgos would look to have a shot at going 7 innings. I always love that from a starter.
  5. The bench is razor thin they need to be a little more proactive about getting Davis and Prince action. Davis I can see alittle bit why because of lack of flexibility, but Prince could easily have been helping spell Yuni, Weeks, and Gonzalez more
  6. It sure would be nice to be on a hot streak during the middle of the month. In general a great month to play well with 18 divisional games
  7. Not exactly a ringing endorsement there for the Brewers drafting high ceiling pitchers.
  8. Also agree on the speed, at this point is most of the way up and down the line-up too. Noboady is going to hit 50 SB, but I prefer having it spread out so much. Someone could take off at almost any point
  9. Walking the bases loaded and a 3-0 count to Gonzalez, almost have to pull Feldman soon don't you?
  10. Love Nelson's start to the season 5:1 K to BB and over a K/ inning.
  11. Burgos first start and the chance to get back to .500 against the Cubs. It seems like only a week ago people were about ready to jump of over passes.
  12. With the exception of Weeks the team is hitting for quite the batting average so far this year. Seems like a pretty big change from previous years
  13. Glad to see Garfield coming around with the bat the last week and seeing the BB rate getting back closer to last year. Its not like we need a catcher soon, but I sure like the success we seem to have had in finding catchers internally the last few years better than the previous decade.
  14. Not a big fan of the bunt there. Braun is maybe not hot, but you've got speed hottest and best hitters coming up after that Schafer single. Give me the most chances at hits there.
  15. There is a pretty big difference in sending Fiers down over Peralta. Peralta was pretty good last September and really had only one truly bad start this compared to Fiers who really struggled throughout spring and this year and the end of last year. I think he can bounce back as well, but this is far different from having a short hook and trashing a guys confidence. The look Fiers got is the kind of extended look many of us hope guys do get before decisions are made. As was mentioned above now is the time to use that flexibility the options give you in a productive way.
  16. Rams does a fantastic job and is very upfront about what he values in a prospect. His level of detail is such that meaningful disagreement is possible. And my experience arguing with him has always been positive. Over the years Brewerfan has grown tremendously and still managed to remain a place to have a pretty good discussion and not get weighed down with most of the usual internet pettiness. Nothing in this thread would change that.
  17. Nashville always seems the hardest to predict how well they will do record wise, but with the mix of prospects and guys with experience they seem like they should be fun both on the scoreboard and with the prospect talent.
  18. Coming from any other team the arguments that Lohse is a fundamentally different pitcher after changing his approach the last two years would inspire some level of cautious optimism. But I can't think of a single veteran pitcher that the Cardinals turned around who stayed fixed after he left. Whether that means they have a special pitcher sauce or they just know when to let these guys walk away doesn't really matter. I hope Kyle is somehow the stunning exception, but the loss of the 1st rounder makes it hard to get the high ceiling kind of talent the system needs to not konk out in the near future.
  19. I think you'd be better off keeping the 3 years to Arby and letting them be free agents after 5 years. Teams do seem like they have gotten better at not over paying those guys in between average and replacement level once they get into arby. The higher minimum is a little bit of a squeeze on smaller markets, but there are a lot of guys who toil for a pretty brief major league stay and I'm OK with there being a little more pie for them rather than adding more zeroes for guys already signing for 100's of millions.
  20. MLB tends to behave gentlemanly towards other businesses, but I wonder if having the International draft framework in place they might just decide to drop their existing agreements with Japanese baseball and just draft whoever right off the bat?
  21. If he can hit off the bench there are other guys that can move around.
  22. Perhaps I'm overly optimistic, but Davis and Morris both have potential opportunities now. As for Gamel talk about seeming cursed. Green and Gonzo at first doesn't exactly thrill me on the offense or defense side.
  23. The extreme underweighting of depth is problematic for exactly the reason the Brewers demonstrated last year. Even on pretty good teams the bulk of the roster will be players in the goodish range. While a season can certainly be sunk by injuries to your key ball players at anytime in many cases the sabotage strikes be knocking out the average guy leaving you having to plug in a black hole. Which naturally enough leads to holding onto OK guys late into arbitration and even FA for players you ought to have a good chance to replace. Teams with less resources don't go broke paying the Hallady's and Grienke's of the world. It's the 3-4 Suppan's that kill you. Being able to cycle guys with minimal talent loss at the bottom of the roster at a low cost is a viable strategy. Also Law is an excellent example of the psychological phenomena where acting like a jerk makes people think you are smarter.
  24. The write-up also betrays a distinct brand of Law's obnoxiousness. Why is getting creative with slots the only way to get high upside? Roache and Taylor are both higher risk high upside picks. It just didn't happen to conform to his particular brand of obsessive free market & break the bank thinking.
