  1. I don't think I'd eat one for $20,000.
  2. I foresee a Paul Sorrento-like career. A nice enough player, but nothing to get too upset about.
  3. Here's another outrage. . . http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/04/07/ryanair.lavatory.fee/index.html?hpt=T2 I guess they're just searching for the pricing model that gives them the best chance to make money. Like an amusement park that has free admission and charges per ride vs. one that has a high admission with free rides. Still, it's getting really ridiculous.
  4. I'm not sure how they're going to score enough runs. . .Zaun, Hart, Escobar, Gomez, McGehee & the pitcher. . .That's troubling. I see them at 77-85. Cards 96-66 Reds 82-80 Brewers 77-85 Cubs 76-86 Astros 76-86 Pirates 60-102
  5. Skype. I'm doing live video back and forth with family and friends 10,000 miles away for free. 25 years ago, I was paying $100 a month to call my girlfriend (now wife) using an MCI card between Whitewater and Purdue--and even then, we had to keep calls fairly brief. Besides that, the whole live streaming of sports results is still an amazing thing for those of us who grew up pre-ESPN. It's possible to know just about everything about everything on demand vs. having to wait for Hank Stoddard to read a score to you in the 5 minutes they would give him at the end of the 10:00 news.
  6. Eric Gagne Jerry Royster Jamey Wright Gerald Williams Jimmy Haynes Ben Grieve That's a start anyway. . .
  7. Of course I love Ueck and am glad to see him honored in any context, but the guy I was happiest to see inducted was Mad Dog Vachon. He was the scariest guy throughout my childhood. Not sure how he would play now, but that awesome beard and voice, with a complete disregard for the rules. . .I was terrified.
  8. I agree with some of the sentiments expressed here. He ought to know by now what is required of being on a MLB roster. It's a 7 or 8 month sacrifice and you have to miss out on stuff. Sorry for his daughter that her dad can't make it to her birthday party. It's just part of the deal. It goes with the million dollar paychecks and the fame. And having the other 4 or 5 months completely free to spend with your family. And to even call it a hardship is such an overstatement. With people working multiple jobs, military families losing a parent for long stretches at a time (or in some tragic cases, forever), people working far from home. . .Baseball-reference says Edmonds has made over $85 million in his career. I think he can spring to have his daughter and a hundred of her closest friends travel to Milwaukee or wherever for a little cake in the afternoon, and then he can still make it to the park in time for that night's game.
  9. I'm much more comfortable with the GM or owner referring to his players as inventory than I am a field manager. He's supposed to be the guy who gets the most out of those players, and I can't see how you could be successful in that job without some humanity. Unless we have a team of bots. . .In which case, Domo arigato.
  10. My eyesight has also improved, albeit slightly. My contact lens prescription used to be -5.0 in each eye, making my morning routine pretty simple. It didn't matter which eye I put a lens in. . .Now, my left eye has improved to -4.75. Unfortunately, I'm now in need of bifocals, as I can't read anything with the lenses in. To read, I have to use reading glasses in addition to the contacts. They do make bifocal contacts, but I like the daily wear lenses with a fresh pair every day, and they don't make bifocal dailies. Sorry to litter the NOT bugging thread with something that bugs me, but wanted to add that vision can indeed "improve".
  11. Sorry to hear your story, pitchleague. I have come to hate Best Buy. I used to be a big fan, and have bought a number of things there, but they seem pretty terrible now that they're mostly the only game in town. I also have not yet taken the big flatscreen plunge just yet, though I probably will once we finally return to the US later this year. I was thinking about just doing it all through Amazon or Flanners, just to avoid Best Buy.
  12. Congrats 20fry. . .Glad to see that those ended up in the BF.net family. I wasn't following that auction, but you got a great item at a great price. . . Now to add that chest protector. . .
  13. Were they signed? What was the provenance? If they were real, I'd probably spend $175-$200 for the pair. Not sure of the market value, but they would be great to have and show to friends to try on, etc. Catchers gear is inherently cool, so it would be worth paying more.
  14. My daughter's friend dropped something heavy on my daughter's big toe. It must have been a direct hit right on the toenail. It turned black, and never "got better". I guess that in the same way an adult tooth pushes a baby tooth up and out, a new toenail grew from the base, and the black toenail just sort of fell off. Her toenail is now just fine. We never drained the blood, nor did she complain much about it, after a couple of days of exaggerated limping.
  15. I don't believe there was one that fits your description. A quick search of baseball card images from those teams might help. Bucks jerseys from that era had Milwaukee spelled out in block letters. http://www.nba.com/media/bucks/OscarRobertson_200_276.jpg
  16. Anyone else as upset as I am that Pascarelli got dumped from the Baseball Today podcast? He has good insight and he is hilarious. Love his style. Agreed. I sent a note to the Ombudsman, which is apparently the only way they want to hear criticism. Pascarelli is great.
  17. My biggest issues with ESPN in this case are the length of punishment & hypocrisy of it all. They suspended Kornheiser for two weeks for ripping another ESPN host (or hosts, if the Berman link is accurate)--and his #1 replacement is Dan LeBatard, who regularly rips ESPN people on his own radio show. LeBatard is also great on the air, though he said that Mike & Mike is programmed for dumb people, calls Mark Schlereth's analysis "pukey" and takes issue with the whole format of using ex-athletes and ex-coaches to regurgitate the same old cliches in the name of "analysis". So yes, TK's comments about Hannah Storm were pretty rude, but they replace him with a guy who is the furthest thing from a "company guy". That's hypocrisy. Bill Simmons often says that ESPN is so big that they're open to criticism by any and all (Awful Announcing, etc.), and it's better to be at the forefront of that criticism than to just circle the wagons and pretend outwardly that there's nothing wrong at all. Instead, ESPN wants to let the Ombudsman manage all of the heat. It's such a corporate, humorless way to handle things on a network that's supposed to be fun and entertaining.
  18. The Clampdown leader has now pulled Peter Pascarelli off the (formerly very) entertaining Baseball Today podcast. Pascarelli has made a name for himself by being the grouchy old scribe who called in (usually from some miserable airport) to do a daily in-season baseball podcast with Eric Karabell. It was a great show, with both guys bringing a Felix and Oscar rapport to the show. Pascarelli ripped on the Bud Selig statue idea, and then the next day, made an offschedule apology about his comments, and now he's gone. Work for ESPN, rip an on-air personality, or a league commissioner at your own peril.
  19. International Air Shipping isn't bugging me at all. I ordered the new Baseball Prospectus, 3 baseball history books, a DVD and a Wii game from Amazon on Monday, and it all arrived in Singapore (about 9000 miles away) today. It wasn't SuperSaver by any means, but it arrived, was undamaged, complete, and a great surprise to get here so fast.
  20. I'm surprised that SVP went that long without mentioning that he went to Maryland.
  21. When they're done with that cow, there's almost nothing left. You can pretty much take it from there. They aren't putting tenderloin in those sticks.
  22. It feels like time for another ESPN-bashing thread! Tony Kornheiser has been suspended for two weeks from Pardon the Interruption for making rude on-air comments about Hannah Storm's clothing, He has a two-hour local radio show in Washington DC, and he recently made the following attack while Storm was on the morning SportsCenter (text taken from The Big Lead): “Hannah Storm in a horrifying, horrifying outfit today. She’s got on red go-go boots and a catholic school plaid skirt … way too short for somebody in her 40s or maybe early 50s by now.” [she's 47.] “She’s got on her typically very, very tight shirt. She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body … I know she’s very good, and I’m not supposed to be critical of ESPN people, so I won’t … but Hannah Storm … come on now! Stop! What are you doing? … She’s what I would call a Holden Caulfield fantasy at this point.” I like Kornheiser, and find his radio show to be funny, topical and interesting. I podcast it every day and I did cringe a little when he said those things. . .but a two-week suspension?!? That's absurd. Bill Simmons has had similar problems--getting into trouble with criticizing fellow ESPNers. Since leaving the network, Dan Patrick has been pretty critical of ESPN management's pettiness. It just seems they can't stand any kind of criticism from inside.
  23. I'm not a fan of any alternate jerseys. One for home, one for road is fine. Add a patch to commemorate a special event. This new one looks fine for BP.
  24. I got a kit in the mid 90s. I brewed three batches and then just gave up. I worked in a hotel, so getting non-twist-off empties was no problem. . .the biggest issue for me was that at the end of a batch, I had to find something to do with 5 gallons of beer. I was on a fitness kick, and so there was no way I could possibly consume all of it. And even then, I like to drink a variety of beers from time to time. Here, I had cases of beer piling up, with little variety. Then cleaning out the equipment wasn't much fun, either. With yeast, you've got to be careful to get things sanitized, and it was just awkward trying to clean out the big kettle and carboys, the hose lines, etc. I have a friend who loves brewing his own, and he really enjoys tinkering with recipies, etc. I just like to pick up a few different six-packs every once in awhile.
  25. People who buy their own tickets can boo whenever they want, for any reason. I'm against cursing, public drunkeness, and acting like a knob in front of kids, but booing at a sports event? It's open. And if Corey Hart or any player is so psychologically fragile that he can't take a little heat, then he shouldn't be on the team.
