  1. Eric Hosmer helps out the Brewers as the Padres beat the Pirates. Hosmer has gotten hot, and his contract doesn't look as bad as it did a few weeks ago. He's on pace for 5-6 WAR.
  2. It felt like the choice was between Hughes and Jeffress. I think Drake was always meant to be the guy who temporarily held a 40-man spot until another need had to be filled.
  3. The overly reliant on home run team will likely end the season with one player hitting more than 25 home runs.
  4. But the Brewers need Woodruffto start Wednesday, correct?
  5. Amazingly, there are 9 MLB teams with worse 2nd base OPS than the Brewers, including several very good teams. There may be competition for outside help. The Brewers are last in SS OPS but 2nd in 1B OPS.
  6. There has been a lot of talk about the inflated offensive stats for Colorado Springs players. Bubba Derby’s stats over 18 starts with the team have been very impressive at the altitude - they’d even be impressive at sea level. A 24 year old with a WHIP under 1.3, an ERA a little over 3, and a respectable walk to strikeout ratio in Colorado Springs makes me think that Derby is about to break through as a top-30 prospect.
  7. Last year, Davies would have fit your criteria of someone a "business owner" would have fired, and then he did great. Managers who panic when players go through slumps are typically the ones who end up getting fired. However, Sogard doesn't have much track history of success and will likely not be on the 25-man much longer.
  8. Hader could have three 9-inning perfect games in Chicago, and the Brewers could have still lost all three. Credit to Counsell for saving him to be available for a mega-outing.
  9. I was going to start another thread, but it's a similar thought process as with Machado: Brian Dozier. The Twins are desperate for pitching.
  10. Wind will be blowing in (sometimes from right, sometimes from left) all 4 games in Chicago. Not having a bunch of wind blowing out 12-10 games should help each team avoid blowing out their bullpens (with the resulting lingering effects).
  11. 8 in a row and the bullpen is in decent (not perfect) shape heading into the Chicago series.
  12. Maybe it makes MLB seem easy (or sharpens their breaking pitches or location) because those pitchers who survive Colorado Springs tend to do well in Milwaukee.
  13. Bullpen, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Woodruff get multiple innings, piggybacking a potential short-leash Suter start on Friday.
  14. I look forward to seeing a Ramirez / Franklin battery in Milwaukee.
  15. Hopefully we don't get to this point, but it could be interesting to see how many subpar starts Chacin gets before he gets replaced in the rotation. Back in 1992, the Brewers stuck with veterans Bruce Ruffin and Ron Robinson for 14 starts (in which they went a combined 2-10 with an ERA over 6) before finally handing the ball to rookie Cal Eldred (who went 11-2 with a sub 2 ERA in his 14 starts). Sticking with the struggling vets too long likely cost the Brewers the division and quite possibly the World Series.
  16. It's a luxury having a third-string first baseman who hits .429.
  17. Anderson, Davies, and Chacin (ugh) have spots lined up. Around May 15, what odds would you put on the other guys being in the rotation? I'll put Guerra at 80%, thinking he's not going to fall off far from his current high level of performance. Miley is at 60%. If he comes close to his spring performance, he turns into a significant asset. Woodruff at 35%. He did not get sent to the minors due to performance, and he's pitching well in Colorado Springs. Suter at 25%. Woodruff gets the slight nod due to having a higher likelihood of getting through the 6th inning.
  18. I like the 2-inning saves. Although it means losing the guy the next day, pitching 2 innings in a game involves less strain than pitching 1 inning in consecutive games (because you avoid the "pitches" thrown in the bullpen the day you don't pitch). It will be interesting to see if Hader is available on Thursday after throwing 2 clean innings on Tuesday. Perhaps Counsell has a per-week inning or pitch count in mind.
  19. Chacin, Suter, Davies, and Woodruff all have ERA’s over 5, and the Brewers are 4-1. Hopefully the late-game magic can be replaced (or supplemented) by more sustainable, improved starting pitching.
  20. I don’t remember a Brewer win ever ending this way.
