  1. I’ve thought all along that the best case would be Nelson to have limited availability after the all-star break. More likely he’d be out until September. If he’s in the picture starting in May or June, that’s a game-changer beyond what any high-priced acquisition could bring us. What a story!
  2. Except 3 teams did it last year. Was the situation similar: keeping a catcher who hit .209 in AA and plays poor defense on the 25-man for the entire year?
  3. At least 82 wins, have several of the young guys progress, and have at least one minor league hitter and pitcher emerge with superstar potential.
  4. Josh Hader could have told Maddon that Michael Taylor could hit a fastball.
  5. And he's a hero. http://www.tmz.com/2017/10/03/bubba-derby-vegas-shooting/
  6. Wilson's WHIP with the Cubs is over 2.
  7. On an otherwise glorious night, the game when Yount got his 3,000th hit, the Brewers lost a big game with 2 outs in the 9th on a similar play as Knebel's error in Pittsburgh. That really hurt a very good Brewer team's chances to overtake a great Toronto team in the division.
  8. Heading into the Cubs' series with Drake and Torres as the 8th and 9th inning relievers. Does Taylor Williams get put into a big spot for the first time?
  9. Brewers lead the league in (HR+K+BB) / plate appearances at a 38.3% clip. Ten years ago the Brewers' 3TO rate was 28.0%. Over MLB, the 2017 rate is 33.5% and the 2007 rate was 28.2%.
  10. Excluding Miller and County (which would be top 5): Favorite: Fenway - throwback, intimate Other nice ones, in order AT&T - the view Wrigley - sucker for old parks, the ivy, and atmosphere outside the park Target - feels compact due to outfield seats being on top of action, lot to do nearby Safeco - a retractable roof without shadows! Petco - feels cavernous due to outfield seats being far away from the action Coors - the view, younger fanbase Kaufmann - way ahead of its time Camden - not a fan of the city, structure isn't impressive Citizens Bank - nice, new park Least favorite - old Riverfront Stadium - the most stale of the cookie cutters Others, in order from most to least crappy: Metrodome - not a baseball park Old Vet (Philly) - not quite as stale as Cincy and cheesesteaks > skyline chili Sky Dome - bad sightlines Olympic - at least they spoke French Shea - cookie cutter but had grass New Comiskey - not bad, nothing special, not a good location New Yankee - feel like you're in the old stadium (prefer an upgrade feel for the money spent) Minute Maid - is the roof ever open? Old Yankee - you could feel the history, but it's a dump
  11. True but good teams like the Dodgers and Nationals basically laid down for us as well. The Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox also laid down for us, because jeopardizing their own chances at making the playoffs was more important than facing a playoff scenario that did not include playing the Brewers.
  12. With two bullpen games every five days, another effective arm is huge. What would be even more huge is having Wilkerson pan out as a cheap 5th starter candidate for the next 6 years. I'd be interested in why he hasn't gotten a shot until now. His minor league stats are a WHIP below 1.1 and over a K per inning.
  13. Who would have guessed that there'd be such ticket demand for a mid-September series against the Marlins?
  14. With a need to replace Nelson for the rest of 2017 and possibly part of 2018, it could make sense to make a trade, even though the pitcher received would not be eligible for the postseason. A type of candidate I have in mind is James Shields, who becomes a free agent after 2018. Obviously there's a question on whether he's any better than Jungmann or even Garza; plus the White Sox would need to pick up at least 75% of his $21 million 2018 salary. Are there other, more logical choices? Note that the Twins are so desperate for a 5th starter that I could even see the Brewers be willing to make Garza available to a team that actually wants him.
  15. In addition to the names mentioned, Anderson, Nelson, and Davies are all under the Brewers' control for at least another 3 years. Woodruff seems like a keeper, and Suter has promise. There's a lot of potential candidates to fill spots in the rotation that may not even need to be filled through 2020.
  16. What a tense homestand. Five 1-run games and the other was a 2-run game ... and somehow the games seemed closer than the scores indicated.
  17. Hader, Davies, and Suter were brilliant in July, against top competition in a pennant race.
  18. That was the Cubs being extremely confident that they'd eventually score a bunch of runs against the soft-tosser.
  19. I'd be surprised if Anderson returns before August 20, but your plan makes sense. Guerra seems unlikely to turn it around this season and may end up as a long reliever in September.
  20. It's suspicious that Brinson got pulled from last night's game in the first inning. If the call up was planned, he wouldn't have started the game.
  21. Following the Webb acquisition, Scahill was retained and Blazek was optioned. It's possible the reasoning is the Brewers may need Blazek to fill in as a starter if Guerra (or perhaps Suter) falters and need him to get stretched out again.
  22. It wasn't too long ago when it seemed like the Cubs, Cardinals, and Pirates were going to be really good for a long time.
  23. Nice follow-up to Tom H's article Saturday about the Brewer clubhouse.
  24. Several guys on that list I can't see a team committing to put on their 25-man roster for the entire 2018 season.
