  1. I've heard two arguments on SS; first is that you wait until you are 70 because the payments will be much higher and with life expectancy longer and longer it means you will still have 10 - 15 years or more with that money. Second argument is that you may not make it to 70 and if you don't take any payments the government gets to keep that money so start taking your payouts right away. I can see both sides of the argument and I have a ways to go before I have to worry about it but I see myself waiting assuming I don't need the income.
  2. FYI - I think we had an investing thread somewhere but I changed the title of this one to more closely reflect the discussion as it's gone off in several interesting directions related to personal finance.
  3. Lol, control is the only thing holding him back from being completely dominant. You're definitively saying a 22 year old with MLB success under his belt can't fix that as he progresses? I'll continue listening to the scout. A reminder that it is OK to disagree about a prospect. Please do so respectfully.
  4. Well yeah there's always that risk but the market has always rebounded within a few years. And let's say you have $2 million when you retire. If the market tanks as bad as the depression or great recession or whatever other market calamity that has struck, it will go down probably 40 - 50%. You will still have $1 million and within a few years you'll be back to $2 million. Putting off retirement for a couple of years is probably a wise move if it tanks right before you want to call it quits. And if it tanks more than 40 - 50% that probably means every investment on the planet is tanking. And I'm not saying seeing 50% of your net worth go away is easy to swallow. I'm just saying expecting 10% return on an index fund is reasonable given historical returns and time.
  5. Guess that means Camargo goes to super utility role. He had the bulk of starts at 3rd last year and did pretty well for a 24 year old.
  6. You must have missed the 63 - 32 loss to Indiana at Camp Randall back in 2001.
  7. But haven't those indexes achieved about the same return the last 75, 100 years? yeah there've been dips along the way but it always bounces back and then some.
  8. I think I'd rather get a job I enjoy for 35 years than one I feel the need to retire from after 15.
  9. I agree. The last two drafts have been decent. Off the top of my head they are very good at RB, WR, QB, and CB going forward. Tight end needs an upgrade. The OL is good but needs some back fill (too bad about Cole Madison. Wonder if he is ever going to play football again? Haven't heard squat since the summer.) DL is good but I worry about depth and how Daniels will age. OLBs need help. Matthews should be gone at that salary. Is Fackrell the real deal? As mentioned above they can't cut Perry until after next year. MLB needs an upgrade. Martinez is just a guy in my opinion and jury is out on Burks. Morrison is filler. Jake Ryan is too slow for modern day NFL. If they could draft a stud MLB and Burks develops that would be ideal for me. Safety is another spot they need to focus on. Obviously they shouldn't go into next season with Williams back there and Jones is kind of hit and miss.
  10. With the pick the Packers traded to move up 8 spots to get Spriggs, the Bears took OG Cody Whitehair who has started every game of his 3-year NFL career. Nothing like doing your biggest rivals a solid. Bears wanted Spriggs. They had the next pick and traded out after GB took him.
  11. No kidding. I see guys back there and am thinking "I literally have never heard of that dude"
  12. Maybe he thinks the Brewers just decided to let Derek Johnson go to the Reds & doesn't know they actually were negotiating hard to keep him.... and the "wake up call" bit may be what purpose he thinks Johnson's departure will serve to/for the Brewers. That's the only concrete thing I can think of. Those coaching & trainer changes are truly all they've done. Nothing else is even remotely questionable on a level even as small as letting Taylor Jungmann leave for overseas last winter. If he thinks there's anything to what he's saying, but that's all he's actually going to say, then he's truly no journalist and in the meantime he's just gotten a bunch of folks grasping for any kind of news/scoops/insights all hot & bothered over a bunch of nothing. That seems likely. I don't see Carroll as a guy who would care about player moves all that much.
  13. And the rest of our pitchers would suffer because of the dramatic dropoff in outfield defense behind them. Say goodbye to all those runs saved. [sarcasm]Sign me up.[/sarcasm] We're trading Cain too??
  14. When you have a career night like Lopez did and go 8-13 it tends to lead to overconfidence and the false belief you can do that every time. There's also the law of averages. He hit his first one the next night.
  15. Speaking of Hulu TV....I found out they have FS1, ESPN, AND BTN. BEtter than Sling for sports for the same price.
  16. I was more ticked at the defense.
  17. From what I recall he was supportive of the reason Braun got off in the first place - chain of custody. I don't think he ever said Braun was innocent. And Carroll's tweet referenced above seems like an attempt at getting attention. It's like the posters here who say "I have inside info but I can't divulge it."
  18. I did a factory reset of my phone about six weeks ago and since then I cannot login to Twitter. It keeps saying "an error occurred when logging in. Please try again later". So I tried again later...and later...and later and got the same error. I reset my password. Same thing. This happens on both my phone and my computer so it's an account issue. I submitted a case to Twitter like 9 different times but they keep sending back a robo email about changing my password. At this point I just want to deactivate the account and start over but you have to login to deactivate it. Any ideas?
  19. Like I said, Chase card is more flexible.
  20. They looked really good today. The defense has been outstanding.
  21. Since we live in Chicago and it's an American hub we are looking at an American Airlines card (could do United but we don't like United). You get free baggage fees for yourself and up to four other people, preferred boarding, up to 50K bonus miles if you put $4000 on it in the first like 90 days etc. etc. It's basically like the Chase Preferred Card mentioned above but with a few more perks. Obviously can only use it for American though which is the big difference. If you want the flexibility of using the card for a bunch of airlines then the Chase card is the way to go. You just won't get the baggage fee waived.
  22. I think this team has a chance to be pretty darn good as long as Happ and Reuvers can consistently stay healthy and out of foul trouble. They are thin down low.
  23. Granted Portland was on the back end of a back to back but still....they are arguably the second best team in the West and the Bucks beat them by 43.
  24. Speaking of student loans, I refinanced a few months ago with a private lender. Cut my rate by well over 50%. Would have done it earlier but was waiting for my employment situation to solidify.
