  1. A couple stat bits on 2 '08 draftees: Wooten, since drafted, has not allowed a run over 18 innings, with less than a baserunner an inning and 22 k's.....superb results from him so far. Komatsu, the 8th round pick, is now 2nd in the Pioneer league in hits, and is over two years younger than the one guy that is ahead of him.
  2. Nice to see a scoreless outing for our friend Stosh. Not bad for a 17 year old.
  3. LaPorta is actually in Durham, NC today playing for the US Olympic team against the Canadians. Too bad about Bryson's labrum - not good news at all on him. Hopefully the tear is a minor one, and he will be able to pitch in 2009.
  4. If it truly is just Kotchman and Marek, this deal is a steal for the Angels. Marek is going to be 25 in a month and is a AA reliever - not much of a prospect at all. If the Braves had truly put Texeira out there, I am shocked that a team would not have bettered the offer.
  5. A segment of a Cleveland.com article discussing 3TO's arrest just to clarify the situation: Pepper Pike police Sgt. Joe Mariola said police were called to the parking lot of the Woodmere police station Jan. 31 after a Woodmere officer found Jill Branyan sitting alone in her car. She was crying. The officer determined that the alleged assault took place in Pepper Pike. She was taken back to the Pepper Pike police station, where Mariola said she gave a complete statement. The couple had gone to The Cowboy restaurant in Bainbridge and apparently argued on the way home, Mariola said. At some point, Russell Branyan, who was driving, reached over and grabbed his wife's mouth to stop her from talking. The force of the grab caused her to develop a swollen lip and some bleeding. Mariola called Branyan at his home to tell him police wanted to speak with him.
  6. Just a reminder that first round pick Lawrie is on the Canadian Olympic team, which should be interesting to watch as well. Not sure what amount of playing time he will get, as he is by far the youngest player on the team. Only top Mariners prospect Saunders and top Indians prospect Weglarz are under 23 on the team besides Lawrie, otherwise all these players are veteran minor leaguers or semi-retired major leaguers like Rheal Cormier. For those in North Carolina, the Canadian Olympic team will be playing the US Olympic team all next weekend in exhibition games at the Durham Bulls stadium.
  7. With the score 6-4 for Canada heading into the top of the ninth, Chinese Taipei were able to load the bases with only one out on Mike Monster (Kelowna, BC) when he hit Ming-Yen Kan to bring in a run and make it 6-5. Evan Grills (Whitby, ON) was then brought in to relieve Monster. We need to draft that pitcher next year, he is a Monster. What a great name. The throw from center beat Wu to the plate with catcher Greg Densem (Toronto, ON) waiting to apply the tag. Wu would then virtually dropkick Densem, striking his spikes in the catcher's mask. This incident would clear both benches, but the situation was diffused before there were any further altercations. Wu was ejected from the game and could face a possible suspension. Wow, this must have been one seriously intense game. Nick Bucci (Sarnia, ON) got the start on the hill for Canada and took care of Chinese Taipei in order in the first inning. He would retire the side in order again in the third on route to a five inning outing, allowing three runs and two walks with five strikeouts. It is easy to forget about Bucci, our 18th rounder (signed), but this quality performance shows that Bucci is one to watch as well.
  8. Cubs are embarrassing themselves tremendously. Sinatro bumpes the umpire, after a correct call I might add, then Pinella comes out and belly bumps the ump as well. Just a joke...There had better be some suspensions out of this.
  9. Interesting deal, and I think a really good deal for the Indians. A top notch catching prospect and a decent pitcher is a good haul for Blake. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/07/26/blake.dodgers/index.html
  10. Why would Hardy ever agree to go to third base. At SS he is a Top 5-10 offensive player, at 3rd he be lucky to crack the top 20, that would cost him a ton of money IMO. A move to 2nd makes more financial sense for Hardy than a move to 3rd, but he would make the most just staying at SS. While I agree somewhat with the belief that Hardy would not be happy at all with a move from SS, I think Hardy's offensive season continues to be undervalued. His OPS is 2nd overall amongst those that have played SS for more than 135 at bats this year, and is 8th amongst 3B if he were to be slotted as a third sacker. Hardy is still 25 for a few more weeks, so I have to disagree with some of the posters here that seem to think that Hardy's offensive potential has been tapped out, especially when discussing whether his bat will ever play at third..
  11. Former Cub and Padre Carmelo Martinez was filling in for Sandberg, who is in Cooperstown for the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. If you watch that youtube video all the way through, the pitcher that threw the ball into the stands also had to be restrained from taking a bat into the stands to go after fans. The pitcher is looking at some serious charges - felonious assault.
  12. Hola Pedro, count me in...and if I win, I will give the 2nd ticket to Insomniac Ink.
  13. Wow, just hearing about that I am shaken up FOR you. Good job being alert....to me this guy should have charges brought against him that reflect that his negligence was reckless and could have ended in deaths.
  14. Mota' in What's your hold on Yost We've got wins in our sight yet your blowing them thru the night Oh Motas in What's your hold on Yost Our playoff chance might be toast We won't be alright tonight
  15. Christian Bale was arrested today in London for assaulting his mother and sister. Very weird. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/sns-ap-people-christian-bale,0,7802765.story
  16. I saw it as a matinee today and am firmly on the the Health Ledger Oscar bandwagon - it was a transcendant performance. Morgan Freeman is such a tremendous actor and does a great job in his role again. I agree with Kat's synopsis of the movie in terms of its flaws, and I am not as huge a fan of Bale as most. I would like Twobrewers to explain how Ledger's performance was overhyped, because I disagree completely.
  17. Two quick questions: Any word on why Brantley exited the game after one at bat (with the injury and trade stuff, 'ya never know), and with Gillespie getting his 33rd double, any idea what the record is for doubles in the Southern League?
  18. Somehow, Melvin found a 2B who is expected to have even worse defense than Weeks? I'm thinking that we are going to hear a lot of cliches from Melvin when he tries to justify this move Strangely, Utley was not available. Durham is perhaps the best lefty bench bat that could be had, and for a reasonable price. There are some really whacked out expectations flying around this forum.
  19. I am pretty certain that the deal is Hammond and Ford for Durham, which seems fair to me. Hammond is 26 and has not taken well to AAA at all. Ford, who is regarded as the fastest player perhaps in the minors, has taken a pretty precipitous fall as a prospect, having reached 6 on the power 50 a year ago.
  20. I am guessing the four prospects are indeed Lucroy, Green, Cain, and I guess Brantley (though his inclusion seems to run counter to what Melvin had stated earlier about the top AA prospects in Huntsville. After the really cool Cain article Mass posted today, I really am not sure which of those four I would want to be included in the deal. I hope Melvin does not do too many more of these type of delayed deals, they are slightly traumatic.
  21. The problem with the idea that C Angel Salome is serving a suspension is that Michael Brantley is also suspended...yet he started. The suspensions are staggered, so that the Stars are not hamstrung in regard to their roster.
  22. Cody Scarpetta is not happy about going from 37th to completely off the power 50....his 4 scoreless innings so far are a great piggyback off his 2 inning, 5 strikeout, scoreless outing last time.
  23. Bravo monty, excellent stuff from you as usual. Just shows what simply looking at batting average does to player analysis.
  24. CookOut is a hugely popular place around here. I haven't been, but apparently they have some awesome hamburgers. A little over a month ago I visited North Carolina, and the friends I stayed with recommended this place, which has no seating, just a drive through, and they grill their food on large Weber's apparently. It was awesome, primarily for their 2 dollar shakes, which are really tasty. I highly recommend trying this place out. I tried Sonic when I was there too, and it was just meh.
  25. I found out yesterday that not only is "Mose" Ken Tremendous, but he is also the son-in-law of Regis Philbin. Schurr and his wife (who is a writer on Heroes) were on Regis' show with their new baby. http://bventertainment.go.com/tv/buenavista/regisandkelly/special/interviews/index.html Also, for those needed a summer office fix, here is a dunder mifflin newsletter: http://www.dundermifflin.com/newsletter/scranton/scranton_071708.shtml
