  1. Yulieski Gurriel, a third baseman, was dominating the Cuban league this season with a .500 batting average, .599 on-base percentage and .874 slugging percentage. Is that good?
  2. This guy is a supposed similar to Cabrera - just defected with his brother today....would expect a 5/70 or more type deal.... not an in the box thought, but has a plus plus bat
  3. Sullivan had quite the year in 2014...would love to have him in Biloxi
  4. my new list after the recent trades - I have not changed most of previous comments, interesting to me how depth has been improved... 1. Orlando Arcia - I want him up in May....Barry Larkin is my statistical ceiling comp for him 2. Maverick Phillips - Maverick needs to be cultivated a bit yet...see him as a Grady Sizemore as a Indians rookie type of player 3. Trent Clark - if the 15 class was redrafted, I think he would go top 7 as of now 4. Jorge Lopez - I am unduly proud of my June 27th post...it really tells you how quickly he has risen in the eyes of many 5. Josh Hader - have him ranked this high even though his most likely landing spot is as a top notch shutdown reliever because: A) that is pretty doggone good all in itself, 2) I think there is still a chance he develops his secondary's to the point that he becomes Chris Sale part deux 6. Jacob Nottingham - After the deal I saw a couple of places that had him outside Brewers top 10 - that is hogwash....Nottingham is a fringe top 100 overall guy with a rare subset though he still has a lot to prove 7.Gilbert Lara - the stats mean little to me right now..his age for level is just silly and the first hand initial reports support this lofty ranking 8. Isan Diaz - I keep hearing comps for him that are a little startling - such as Cano and with bat speed of prime Rickie Weeks...I am hearing he is not a SS due to lack of arm strength so it was interesting that Stearns mentioned they are keeping him at SS for now 9. Zach Davies - did the Orioles corner the market on drafting skinny ass quality pitchers that end up with the Brewers?....Jimmy Key is my ceiling for him. 10. Michael Reed - excellent athlete that will 100% be a quality major league reserve...30% ish chance he becomes a solid starter in my estimation...tough guy to spot in rankings 11. Clint Coulter - power hitters that spend a full season in FSL should get combat pay 12. Rymer Liriano - I have him ranked pretty high but I think the Padres have completely mishandled him...i am very interested by what he can do from a speed/power metric 13. Tyrone Taylor - batted .340 during playoff run and is still regarded as Albert Almora type defensive outfielder..... 14. Adrian Houser - meteoric rise after the trade, but honestly, this is what he was supposed to be before underperforming as Astro...even so he was 21st ranked guy even with those below par Astro results in a super stacked Astro minor league system....no way he belongs in the 20's in Brewer prospect ranking given those facts...if our new GM had the profile of Jason Kidd, the same alegations that followed Kidd for the failed Larry Sanders for Lopez trade would be dogging Stearns - that Houston haul was so good... 15. Monte Harrison - if he gets all his speed back, just a dazzling type of player that I would love seeing play in outfield next to Clark for a decade or so 16. Devin Williams - this past year in Appleton was horrible, but it saw some extremely talented arms...Brevard is going to give up 7 runs all year next year 17. Cody Ponce - big guy with a mean streak....he will move at a rapid pace I believe 18. Marcos Diplan - Managers in Pioneer league loved him, even with control and results that made some dismiss him a bit.... 19. Kodi Medeiros - scary prospect that can still boom, but needs velocity back to really excite me...should be noted that he did not give up any homers last year.... 20. Nathan Kirby - i think this injury may have been a good thing for Brewers in long run....this guy has chance to be a top pitcher if he comes back to where he was before injury 21. Demi Orimoloye - Might be too low....hearing that more than one scout has said "holy crap" after seeing him in instructionals....if he ever collides with Monte Harrison in outfield, the resulting black hole created may suck up our universe 22. Keon Broxton - I think he is one of those types that needs an opportunity to shine over a full season to really show what he can do...would love to see him get 350+ at bats 23. Trey Supak - A guy picked in the supplemental 2nd round in 2014 right around time of Isan Diaz...he has the size and stuff to rise up this list rapidly.. 24. Yhonathon Barrios - 7 innings - 3 hits - 0 runs or walks with 7 k's in majors is a heck of a debut...the fact he converted to pitcher late makes the fact he is still 23 even more remarkable....any chance he could convert to starter? 25. Jake Gatewood - still a believer...he has some tools that are pretty rare 26. Javier Betancourt - A guy that reminds me a bit of Frank White and others from a bit of a bygone era of 2nd basemen...with Isan Diaz onboard will be interesting how he is moved up the chain. Honorable mention: A ton of talent still there such as Jorge Ortega, as well as Perry, Ventura, Leal, Cooper, Roache, Rivera, Wang, Diaz and Colleymore....
  5. Chase Anderson has a weird mojo going against the Reds...in 20 and 2/3 innings over 3 games, he has given up 1 run with 2 of the games in that Cincinnati bandbox....after looking over his 40 odd starts so far I like him as a back end starter going forward Also, Jeff Zimmermann over at fangraphs is known for his metrics being a little different than others - however, he loves Domingo Santana and Isan Diaz - ranking them 4th and 14th respectively among milb hitters: http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/2016-prospect-rankings/ And Al Skorupa, a former fangraphs contributor and current A's scout had this to say about Diaz, throwing the name of Robbie Cano as a comparable - yes please.... "Saw Isan on the backfields this Spring and a few times over last couple years. I think he's a 2B. Just doesn't have the footspeed or actions for shortstop, but he improved enough where I had to stop and think about it... so maybe some team could play him there. I just wouldn't. He doesn't run like a shortstop and I don't think it will get any better as he reaches mid 20's. I'm not shocked at all by his power. There aren't many guys who create the kind of bat speed Isan does. The Robbie Cano comp has been thrown out there a billion times, but he really does have that swing and look. (Al Skorupa)
  6. Love, love love, love this trade....Isan Diaz is loved by advanced metrics...some even have hime as a top 50 prospect already.....I think I might love Stearns.....just a stunning, amazing first few months on the job
  7. Thank you EBAN, that was very nice of you....I hope I can put up a "Is Cody Ponce a top 100 prospect in all of baseball?" post that has the same mojo in a few months.
  8. i see this as a mentoring position with an eye to Cappy becoming a future pitching coach....only Briggs could see this as a negative
  9. if Jakson Reetz has another season like 2015 he will be real easy to get because the Nats will be releasing him....Last year was an abomination for Reetz and his star has fallen considerably. I work with Trea Turner's former neighbor and Turner's dad's best friend so I follow him pretty closely...would be surprised to see him included in any deal
  10. As someone that has been on this site for a decade and a half...holy crap....I hold genuine affection for the people that have poured such intense energy into it and the Brewers in general....I honestly think the Brewers should have a fan plaque at the stadium honoring the efforts of Brian, Jim, Patrick, Toby and others over the past 15 years - they have done a great deal, I believe into helping produce a true attendance anomaly in Milwaukee as it does not make sense that out attendance over the last decade has been so strong.... Life and circumstances has made it increasingly difficult to put new articles and opinion pieces as well as an independent power 50 onto this site....however the forum has stayed quite strong and is set up extremely well and the link report is beyond outstanding - what Jim does for us as prospect fans will be very important for us this year, and I don't think I or others can thank him enough for what he does. With that as sufficient preamble I hope, I come to the crux of my idea, which is to take the strengths of this site and meld it with the strengths of Nicholas and the others at Disciples of Uecker....they have outstanding content, and their site clarity is way above other Brewer sites that are also quality. Not sure if this is an idea mentioned previously by others or if the vision for the site is to just keep plugging along...if that is the case, I will be a very willing daily visitor....but as someone that holds genuine sentimentality for brewerfan.net, I want it to thrive and be something that I can point with pride to when I want to refer others in my dynasty leagues or others I know from coaching to get Brewer information....Not sure if the D of U people would have any interest in joining and this might be an idea that is met with ridicule, but I come at this looking at the future and recognizing the tremendous resources here and not as a criticism. Thanks.
  11. just my notes on some intriguing prospects being brought up here...Brinson is a top 50 guy, Cordell may be top 500...Cordell's name is being brought up way too much...I think Ortiz would be my favorite 2nd piece to get in a deal, but if he is the 1st? oy....I love Renato Nunez' bat and think he is going to mash - 23 rbi's in his last 10 games last year also suggests that - but he regressed at 3rd last year and it is one of the main reasons A's started playing Olson in the OF last year, as they think the two of them cannot coexist on the infield...Jurado is a divisive prospect...some think he has over-performed, some think he is just growing into his stuff
  12. With Jackson, i would try to determine why he has not been the same batter as he was as his rookie year. ..Take a look at that rookie season in 2012...just sick numbers put up in a pitchers park...was he battling some personal demons or just mechanics? I think he is worth a look on a 1 year as he looks to rebuild his value....I am not voting for Pedro to be a member of the 2016 Brewers club
  13. Mercer, Hechevarria, Galvis are all guys getting about the same in $$ as Segura......think it is silly to say it is wasted money when our salary is going to be stunningly low this year - we are looking at about 55-60 million at this moment
  14. I live in Charlotte and would obviously love to see AAA team of Brewers here...however the relationship with White Sox is strong and Sox have 3 of their milb teams in North Carolina - so that is optimal for them. I will say that the beautiful new stadium in Charlotte is stunning and a great place to watch a game...however it is a bandbox, does not play to its measurements (I think the measurements are actually false, as it actually looks very similar in dimensions to the park the high school team I help coach plays in which is 20 feet less all around that what the Charlotte park measures in at), and thus skews stats offensively.
  15. it should again be noted that Phillips had 5 extra base hits in AA playoffs including 2 home runs...
  16. Found an interesting stat courtesy of the excellent Astros site "The Crawfish Boxes"... We know that the Cal league has some skewed offensive metrics, and that is due to three particular bandboxes in that league. One of the posters separated stats out for several Astros and in this case a former Astro. For Maverick, and remember this is what he goes by, not Brett, and I, for one, am not going to allow people to forget that , this is what the poster came up with: LNC, HD, and STO (293 PA): .305 AVG / .386 OBP / .590 SLG (.285 ISO) 7 Oth Cal Lg Parks (157 PA): .361 AVG / .400 OBP / .563 SLG (.202 ISO) The iso power is a bit of a significant difference, but from this I am very excited and extrapolate that Phillips is a guy that is going to be a triples machine, even at the mlb level....one of those guys that would put up video game numbers at Coors Field. As friends such as Briggs on the site point out the horror that 2016 is going to be and writers such as McCalvy predict a 100 loss season, I conversely am incredibly excited about this season...i think we have tremendous talent predictors in charge of our system right now and believe Phillips is the leader of a new wave of talent that is going to be very exciting.... As a refresher I also added up his 2015 total stats when the playoffs were included (5 of his 6 hits in 21 playoff at bats were for extra bases) for the three levels he played at 526 at bats 108 runs 163 hits .309 batting average 37 doubles 14 triples 18 home runs 81 Rbi's 46 walks 17 steals .905 OPS Holy smokes....given that he hit very well in park neutral fields and had such across the board stats (Runs and Rbi's and batting average and power!!!!!) how can we not be over the moon on this guy?
  17. Chris Johnson was the instigator in several skirmishes against us and is known as a bad dude.....I really do not think this regime is going to go in for bad actors
  18. Hagadone is filthy by the way...paid more attention to him after I picked him up in a crazy deep 30 man fantasy league and the guy has insane stuff, just one of those guys who has issues taming his movement and stuff...has tendency to have several good outings, then walk two guys and groove a bp fastball for a 3 run homer
  19. After unearthing the Greinke Angels trade thread it was interesting to see that Tillman was the other guy it was rumored we were getting along with Segura,Pena and Hellweg.... It indicates to me that Melvin is more than a cursory member of our management team
  20. Interesting to dig this up now that Hellweg is out of the orginization, Pena is a fringe guy and Segura is apparently going to be traded for minimal return.... I do wonder if the Rangers offer was any good and if it was true that Melvin wanted Olt badly
  21. Reports are coming in on twitter that wrestling announcer/legend Jim Ross has passed away...
  22. The Padres have dire situations in left field and shortstop and have a very pricy but interesting guy in Tyson Ross (23 quality starts last year) that has been attracting a great deal of interest. A deal of Segura and Khrush Davis for Ross might be of some interest even though he does not fit our profile...we have the salary space and he might be a VERY attractive piece. We just happen to match up very well with the Padres needs.
  23. Newcomb is a top 3-5 pitching prospect in all of baseball....
  24. Flip Saunders passed away today and I am very sad about this as he was the coach of the LaCrosse Catbirds in the CBA when I went to school there, winning championships while he was there - huge part of LaCrosse sports history...good guy
  25. Colby Rasmus is not going to be given the QO from Astros......would be a cf option/bridge though not sure what length contract he would want or the extent of his suitors....injury prone and odd guy, but he did have a .800 OPS with 29 homers in just 450 at bats this year, albeit with k's galore obviously we also have the connection with Stearns
