  1. But what if he wants to buy a majority stake in the Admirals? Will Sheets move the Admirals to whichever city he's playing in?
  2. I don't think it's wishful thinking at all. Now, if he would have thrown out a "I am not motivated to...", then we would know for sure.
  3. I think the baseball playoffs are "less bad" than other American sports, but I still firmly believe that the World Series should always be played between the teams with the best records in each league. That said, the other teams who aren't quite there should have something to play for. I have tons of crazy ideas and stupid propositions on this, one of which is to create a huge tournament with all major and minor league teams (and possibly even a few independent leagues), and schedule games throughout the regular season. Instead of having interleague weekends, we would set aside that time for the tournament. I actually sat down and figured out how all of the scheduling would break down - that's not terribly relevant to this thread, but something like this *could* work. Toward the end of the season, bad teams might be way out of the pennant race, but they still have a chance to win something.
  4. The pyramids in Egypt were built by flying eyeballs. This is partially documented on the back of $1 bills.
  5. I don't get it at all. Maybe if it's the last Tickle-Me Elmo in existence and you don't have the money at the moment, but I can't see any reason why anybody do this with normal stuff that you could get anywhere. Then again, I can't see any reason why people would go to those loan shark stores either.
  6. Count me in the minority, but I don't like communism in sports (like the NFL). I don't like the across-the-board mediocrity of the NFL. I like major league baseball. Small market teams are guaranteed control of their own players for at least 6 years, which is very reasonable. I don't want to see bad teams get rewarded for making stupid decisions. It's fun to hate the Red Sox for buying championships, and I don't want that aspect of being a fan to be taken away.
  7. Would the out-of-zone plays be a result of the Brewers employing an exaggerated shift often?
  8. haha you've had Zima.
  9. 2.63 on my first try. The triangle center and circle center killed me, I had mostly 1s or lower in everything else.
  10. Players like Connelly probably won't ever see the NHL on a regular basis (if anything, maybe as a call-up due to injuries), but he might have a career at the ECHL/AHL level, or possibly in Europe.
  11. I have no idea what I'm talking about here, but I'll throw out a guess. If you scan a photo, you can digitize it at a resolution much, much higher than what any digital camera can produce. I'm guessing the same goes for film. Film doesn't really have a "resolution", but if it did, it would likely be higher than any HD broadcasts. Much like a scanner that can transform any old photo into a 20+ megapixel digital image without even relying on interpolation, old film can be transferred into HD resolutions with the proper equipment.
  12. Yep. This is pretty much the primary criteria for picking gold glove winners. Unfortunately, first dibs on the award go to the "whoever won it last year" qualifier: http://www.derivataters.com/goldglove.png
  13. Weekend at Bernie's 2 is better than Weekend at Bernie's.Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is much better than Regular Dungeons & Dragons. Taco Bell used to have Mild, Medium, and Hot. Now they have Medium, Hot, and Fire. I see what they did there! Can I have a small soda? No, we only have medium, large, and extra large!
  14. Last night my son and I wandered the mall while we waited for mom to finish getting her nails done. We saw some cool stuff: * The book Baseball for Dummies, by Joe Morgan. It had a one-paragraph blurb about OBP. * A screenprinting kiosk with a shirt on display featuring photos Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr, and a picture of a Barack Obama CLOCK. Normal pictures of the first two guys, but the picture of Obama was clearly just a clock with his face on the clock face. The shirt also had the words "Unite 4 Change" which I think is a Brett Favre reference, but I'm not sure if its pro-Favre or anti-Favre - the word "change" might imply starting Aaron Rodgers, or it could be written from a NY Jets perspective. * Rob Zombie over the loudspeakers in the golf/camping/fishing upstairs area at the Dick's Sporting Goods store. The music wasn't playing downstairs, and I normally wouldn't assosciate Rob Zombie with those activities. * Golf club heads bigger than a human head. I haven't played golf in years - does everyone just really suck at golf these days?
  15. I think Huntsville has historically been more of a pitcher's park, but has been pretty neutral in recent years (link), possibly due to the quality of the Brewers' prospects. The Southern League as a whole has a reputation of being pitcher-friendly, but I don't know how true that is.
  16. Maybe he managed to get a typewriter to connect to the internet?
  17. So, pretty much Craig Counsell?
  18. I'd just ignore it. Heck, he even used the phrase "big game pitcher"!
  19. Awhile back, I read that Best Buy is going to start doing this for free. Not sure if they have started that program yet, but it might be worth looking into.
  20. The point is that when Utley was at Weeks' age/experience level, he didn't look like he was anywhere near the player that present-day Utley is either. We're not talking about some late-round organizational soldier or AAAA player here - Weeks was a #2 overall pick and about as highly-regarded as a prospect can get, he's hit at every level of the minors, and has shown flashes of that huge potential in the majors. It's not at all unreasonable to think that he might actually hit the way he's always been projected to. Some players are late bloomers. I'm not saying he WILL be great, but to say that he has no chance is kind of silly.
  21. Not really, Utley spent a lot more time in the minors. I don't know what the major league equivalents of Utley's 2+ seasons in AAA were, but I'd imagine they were pretty close to (if not a little bit behind) what Weeks did in his first couple of seasons in the majors.
  22. At age 25, Chase Utley was a less-accomplished hitter than Rickie Weeks is now (Weeks was 25 this season), and then broke out at age 26. He's not really hurting us being in the lineup, so why give up on a huge talent like that?
  23. Yep. If anything, parks in general were smaller than they are now. When the Dodgers played their home games at the LA Coliseum, the fence down the left field line was only 251 ft. Lots of parks were under 300 ft down the lines.
  24. I can't rememeber - is there a rule against picking an injured player, and then stashing him on the DL all season?
