  1. I wonder how long before they flip flop Kris and Kentrail Davis? Having Kentail, after a mediocre sophmore, make his pro debut in A+ looked overzealous when assignment was made, and thats proving to be true. I hope they don't let the kid get burried and completely lose his confidence.
  2. Patrick, I just read your story at PG on Christian Colon. Good stuff, thanks for being so easy to read. I think Colon, besides being a Boras client, fits the Brewers perfectly. The organization is weak at SS, and he seems to be the kind of bat they draft, a power hitter with bat speed. Unlike many other Brewers, he adds contact ability. He is also patient, and you want as many hitters like that as you can get. With his character, we can't go wrong. His defense isn't a concern to me. After watching Escobar be a major downgrade defensively despite superior speed, it makes me appreciate players like Hardy and Colon that are instinctive and efficient, with no wasted motion and a quick release. Colon doesn't have great speed, but he's faster than Hardy, and speed is easily the most over-rated trait in a ballplayer.
  3. That only tells us his shoulder is OK. His command is bad right now, which is sometimes a precursor to an elbow injury. With the number of innings and numbers of sliders he threw his junior year at Indiana, the elbow has to be a concern. Reports of his fastball being straight as a string tell us that he's throwing 4 seemers. In college, his most impressive pitch was his 2 seemer, which he commanded well at good velocity, with terrific tail. He's simply better than this, whether the problems are injury or mechanics.
  4. What a crappy thread title. Kick a young man when he's down. There's obviously something wrong with him, this isn't the guy they drafted. He hasn't done anything off the field to deserve this mis-treatment while he hasn't even been a pro for a year yet.
  5. Bucci was real impressive last night, topping out at 92 on the stadium gun.
  6. Kam Loe was the best offseason move the Brewers made. He had a tollerable ERA pitching for Texas a few years ago, I could easily see him being solid in the NL. Lots of Texas pitches have turned their careers around after leaving that hitters haven.
  7. Maybe so, but they correctly diagnosed his shoulder tendinitis last year, which he sustained despite working limited pitches on a strict schedule. He will likely be a dominant big league reliever, but he's far to fragile to ever be considered to start again. I also hope that instead of being pigeon-holed into the closer role, he is instead is used in the highest leverage situations. It would help the team more, and protect him from the emotional roller coaster that is closing.
  8. With Lofgren now a AAA starter, can they cut Suppan and Bush, and just go with their best starting 5?
  9. It always cracks me up how Doug Melvin is described as a diligent worker, yet he constantly denies talking to anyone. I'm guessing he talks to teams alot more than he admits, or Attanosio would have fired him already. If he really didn't talk to Texas at the most recent meetings, they he should be locked out of the building, but I doubt thats the case.
  10. I don't see any problem with Salome not in the top 10, he rarely plays baseball. He's not playing winterball even though he deserately needs experience and the organization has publically stated their desire for their prospects to play winterball. He's constantly hurt, and the odds of that changing aren't too good as he continues to over-work with the weights instead of increasing his flexibility, especially important for a player with back problems. He seems to be more concerned about looking good in T-shirts than playing baseball. I hope he grows up and commits to being a ballplayer soon, so it benefits the Brewers. His work ethic, if directed in the right direction, could make a very interesting ballplayer. By mediocre do you mean one of the best offensive seasons a Brewers HS draft pick has had in the Pioneer League? True, but Heckathorn was a much more effective pitcher in college, and doesn't have nearly the severe mechanical issues Frederickson has. The player that I'm suprised isn't in the top 10 is Mark Rogers. Theres still so much upside there, and its attainable.
  11. Thats possible, but Drew Anderson never had a AAA season like Heether did this year, with a 400/501/901, and Anderson didn't play 2B/3B.
  12. The guy I'm zeroed in on is a catcher whose OPS is over 700 over the last 4 years., and he throws out 45% of baserunners. What should a guy like that make, $5 million? Unfortunately for Henry Blanco, he has to fight through age discremination, so he played for just $750K last year. He's in better shape now than he was in his twenties, and I'm guessing he would relish the oppurtunity at a fulltime gig.
  13. The Phillies lineup really leans to the left already, so McGehee might be a better fit for them. Joe Blanton might interest the Brewers. He was drafted by the A's, at the time Rick Peterson was putting his stamp on their pitching draftees. He's not great, he should actually be worth less than McGehee because of service time issues. Blanton was better when his conditioning was better, and might pitch closer to his 2005-07 form with the help of the vigorous workouts Peterson puts his pitchers through.
  14. It really did bring a smile to my face, as I just hate to see hard working people suffer such an injustice. This does help restore some faith in the current regime for me. They're 2/3 so far, with Peterson and Heether on the positive side of the ledger. Hopefully I am wrong about Gomez's bat, maybe they see another McGehee. They do know bats well, hopefully they let Peterson fix their view of pitchers. As others have said, keeping Heether makes it easier to deal McGehee. As of right now, Heether is also our only backup righthanded hitting OF.
  15. Care to show some proof of that? The teams that score the most runs are the teams with the highest OPS. Some of those teams don't steal at all. The Brewers were 3rd in the NL in Runs last season because they were 3rd in OPS. It didn't matter that they didn't steal and K'd alot. They weren't 1st or 2nd because those teams had a higher OPS. The team 2nd in Runs K'd even more than us.
  16. We didn't just lose Hardy in this deal, we also lost Cameron. We lost 2 players that were 14.8 Wins Above Replacement the last 2 years. Thats huge.
  17. This is a bad idea. Lucroy is getting way too much hype for his AFL performance. If you curve his stats for league effect, he's been very average. He was only a little above average in AA. He needs AAA. However, Melvin had a bad habit of rushing prospects. Weeks had 2 great seasons in the minors, Gomez never had a good season in the minors. Sure he has tools, but its a real stretch to think he's on the verge of a breakout.
  18. Or we could do like so many other teams do, and trade for pitching. he converts more outs than just about all Ss's including Escobar. he has extremely quick hands and no wasted motion. Statistical analysis backs up this point time and again. Hardy had great range.
  19. Melvin has referenced it before, and the Red Sox use their own version. Baseball people clearly respect similar stats. This deal was made much like the Kevin Mench debacle. Melvin has simply mis-projected a player, and the results will severely hurt our team.
  20. How quickly we forget Hardy was more WAR in 2008 than Braun or Fielder. Even in Hardy's off year he was worth 2 times more than Gomez.
  21. Our GM is clearing salary so he can buy FA pitchers. FA pitchers, historically, are terrible investments. Doug Melvin will be unemployed by this time next year. This is the definitive move of his tenure here. Clearly the wrong direction. He has completed wasted everything that Jack Z created here.
  22. Cameron was 3.8 WAR better than Gomez last year. Can we get a 3.8 WAR pitcher for $10 million? History says we have about a 1 in 20 chance of that. We will likely be worse next year than we were next year. Awful deal. This guy belongs in the minors, he is a dreadful hitter. We also do not get several years of service time of Gomez. He already has over 2 years of MLB service time, because of the way he was rushed to the majors.
  23. Looper is not one of the better FA pitchers, that is a factless statement. He was below replacement level last year. He's never had a good season. Nobody besides Doug Melvin, who has clearly demonstrated he has no understanding of the falsehoods of ERA, wanted him last offseason. Just like I said last offseason about Eric Gagne, and was right about, Looper will be looking at minor league deals.
  24. If I deal Suppan for someone with 2 years left on their deal, I'd rather it be Oliver Perez. Perez really turned things around under Rick Peterson last time, and then he reverted back to his usual wild self without him. I'd think theres a decent chance he could be good again reunited with Peterson. Perez is owed $24 million guaranteed over 2 years, Suppan is owed $14.5 million guaranteed, including the buyout for 2011.
  25. I would think Melvin's hire of Rick Peterson signals a whole new direction on the pitching front. You don't hire Rick Peterson and then go sign the Jarod Washburn's of the world. The pitchers we add will be guys that can miss bats, which will be a major change.
