  1. Farris is a 3rd year pro after being a 3 year starter in college, but he still can't hit. He's not a prospect. He might fill a Mel Stocker type role as a PR is Septemeber, but thats it. The big movers will be Mark Rogers and Amaury Rivas. BoKnowsBall brings up Bucci, who should make a very nice debut, and a little behind him should be Adrian Rosario. Also making his debut will be Kyle Heckathorn.
  2. This is good news. Wilhelmsen had legit stuff, I hope its all still there. This could be a real Indy league success story.
  3. The argument of Cameron versus FA pitcher isn't a difficult one. Cameron will again be worth over 4 WAR this year. Will the $10 million Cameron would cost buy us a 4 WAR pitcher? Thats highly unlikely. Pitchers that project to 4 WAR get huge long term deals, the kind that shouldn't be given out. Cameron is a safe, productive player, and should be retained.
  4. Smith has pitched just fine, but Swindle has struggled with the role Macha uses him in. He is a LOOGY only, but we don't need 2 of them against Houston. Burns could also be in jeopardy, as we don't need a 5th starter until the 15th. We have a slew of guys on the 40 that don't need to be there, like Green, Wright, and Corporan. Hopefully Colome is this years Coffey.
  5. Instead of giving Webb $2 million, they could give us Webb and $1 million. Then thet still save $1 million, and we have Webb for essentially $7.5 million.
  6. Offering Hoffman is a no brainer. In years past, type A FAs like Linebrink were signed by teams that were picking 1-15 in the draft, so they only had to give up a 2nd round pick. I'll gladly take a sandwich pick and a 2nd round pick, or I'll gladly take Hoffman back at a similar salary.
  7. How can you even begin to compare Garret Anderson to Mike Cameron? Cameron is on pace to be worth just as many WAR as last year. Last year Cameron was worth more WAR than Garret Anderson was worth the last 4 seasons combined ! Cameron is on pace to be worth over 4 WAR for the 3rd time in 4 years. He is showing no signs of slowing down. He will do well in FA, and I hope we keep him.
  8. Although dealing McGehee might be a real good idea, there's 1 major hitch in it. Its tough to get good value for a player who is recovering from surgery. McGehee is scheduled to get his knee cut on as soon as the season is over.
  9. I really like this idea DHonks. If Hall fails at SS, they could just use Counsell their until mid-season next year. If Hall hits decent in RF the next month, this could become a viable alternative. Hall was always an underated defender at SS. I'm just suprised others want to make the same mistake with Escobar the Melvin made with Hardy. If Melvin had waiting to call up Hardy until he was ready, he'd be Brewers property through 2011. If that had happened, it would be a no brainer to deal Escobar for Halladay. I understand that Escobar might become an outstanding player, but his best years will be 2012-2016. If we bring him up to start next year, we miss out on an expected big year in 2016, just so we can get marginal production in 2010. Hall might give us marginal, or better, production in 2010.
  10. Remember that one season when Milwaukee Brewers baseball actually mattered? That's a distant memory. Good luck selling 3 million tickets next year Mr. Attanosio. Good luck selling 2 million tickets.
  11. After getting a couple games off in a row 2 weeks ago, Cutter Dykstra has finally got him self going. He's hitting 303 since, with a .378 OBA, and homered in this game. He had an 805 OPS in this league last year, so he's way to good to struggle this much. I'll give him a mulligan for everything he went through earlier in the season, hopefully he finishes strong. Staying health has been what he's struggled with the most.
  12. True, but if he's traded the option becomes a mutual option for $14 million, with a $2.5 million buyout. I'm guessing if we were to pick up the option, but Harang declined, we wouldn't have to pay the buyout.
  13. What he should have done was acquired fireballing Edwin Jackson. If they're paid to scout, they should have seen there was a chance Jackson would breakout. The 25 year old fireballer is 3.3 WAR better than Looper. We could have gotten him for Hart, and then signed or traded for any one of the slew of available OFs the offseason. If we'd added Willingham, we'd be the best team in the division.
  14. Melvin has stated Hall will play all over. With Escobar gone for the birth of his baby, Hall could play some SS. That should help his trade value. Hopefully this will help Hall. He said Sveum gave him a new swing. Jeff Cirillo completely lost it for a couple of years too, and he found himself again.
  15. Alcides Escobar not in the lineup tonight for Nashville. I'm guessing this will lead to speculation.
  16. If he can give us 6-7 innings a start, why doesn't he do that for the Padres? He hasn't even done that over his last 10 starts, when you claim he's been so good but has a below average ERA, despite pitching half those games in the best pitchers park in the league by a longshot. I think Suppans stats would look way better if he pitched half his games at Petco. It would cut down his massive HR totals, which would make a dramtic difference in his ERA. Maybe Corriea is OK, but I'm guessing that since he hasn't been dealt yet and he's cheap (through he's getting more expensive because he earns a $50 K bonus for starts 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, and 32), no body has made a move for him. I'm guessing the Padres are asking for more than you anticipate.
  17. Imagine that, Melvin has been disappointed in a couple of soft tossers he acquired. Do we see a pattern here? I will him credit for Josh Butler, who was obviously someone Jack Z's department recommended, as they wanted to draft him, and he is no soft tosser. He hasn't been brought up yet, but he is the next pitching prospect who'll start in the majors. It stinks he had that oblique strain, hopefully he's back soon. He might have pitched his way into starting contention this year if not for the injury. Many think he's too old to be considered a serious prospect, but he younger than Clay Buchholz.
  18. This is definately the kind of move Melvin makes. Aquire a soft tossing pitching with a tollerable ERA. Ignore the fact that the ERA isn't real, ignore that this pitcher will regress to his means, and he will then be intollerable. Don't waste the prospect Doug. If we want a cheap bad pitcher, just start Dillard or Chris Cody. Correia won't soak up innings when he pitches in a real park and gets hammered around.
  19. Hart may be disappointing to us, but his OPS is above average for a RF, so he's still pretty good. Harang's contract becomes fairly unsavory if he's traded. I think this Hart for Hangang is a good offer. getting the OF prospect thrown in might be a bit much, but might be more atttractive if we threw in a prospect. Harang has been worth just .7 of a win more than Hart this year, which isn't alot considering how much more money he's paid. Most love Harang because of the big season he had in 2007, but don't forget Hart had a huge year that year too.
  20. Huh, I like that. Duncan is awesome. He turns a complete nobody into a good pitcher every year. I'd pay millions for that guy.
  21. To date, Cabrera has only been worth 1 win this year, Cameron has been worth 2.5, these guys don't compare. The Yankees should have given us a real offer for Cameron. We're disappointing enough, I'd hate to be 1 1/2 wins worse right now.
  22. The irony here was Drabeck, not Jeffress, fell in the draft because of off the field issues.
  23. Tell the truth, you only asked that because you wanted to type "Dick Pole"?
  24. He spent very few top draft picks on pitching, but he hit on Gallardo and his position players. He provided Melvin with loads of talent. Melvin says every year that the scouting director should just pick the best talent available. Unfortunately, Melvin has squandered that talent with his inability to identify and aquire pitching.
  25. I completely agree. I would have even thrown in a prospect. Alderson would be a perfect pickup for this team, even though his upside is somewhat limited.
