  1. Unfortunately, Hoffman will just replace whatever pitcher gets hurt between now and then. Such is baseball. Riske wasn't a bad signing, it was just terrible luck that an extremely durable pitcher got hurt so soon after signing, and the injury might ruin his career. The good news is the rest of the pen is throwing well, so Riske can be the mop-up guy until something changes.
  2. Brent Brewer finishes spring training with combined totals including a 417 batting average and a 729 slugging %. Intersting to see Derrick McPhearson with a triple and a homer the last 2 days playing with Nashville. I hope we get an article detailing his travels soon. When was the last time he played baseball? Was it the spring HS season in 2007? He is an absolutly explosive athlete, and worth keeping an eye on, though I'm guessing he'll start the season on the Wisconsin bench.
  3. Hall had 2 seasons that he was worth over $13 million per Fangraphs. Melvin did neither. Hall was worth $7.7 million more than Hardy that year, and it would have been even more If Hall would have been the opening day starting SS. Had Hardy just spent 3 1/2 weeks in AAA to open the season, we would control his rights 1 year longer, and his salary would be a few million less this year. The move was terrible for the present and future. In this case they foretold of a player who was about to have a breakout season. Now this idea has some merit Hauser, even though I think Escobar will hit some.
  4. Thats Mark's exact line from the box score posted on 3/22. Inland Empire is a Dodger affiliate. Apparently this article was old by the time it hit print. Still, any good news on Rogers is good to hear. Great to here him now embracing mechanical changes. The article doesn't answer the question I'm dying to have answered though. Is his fastball back?!

  7. Melvin could have dealt Gwynn to Texas and SD a few years ago. However, Melvin always had an unfounded infatuation with the kid. I always had a feeling based on comments after the draft that year the melvin pushed Gwynn's selection on Jack Z. Gwynn doesn't fit the mold of a Jack Z pick at all. Why would anybody use the 2nd pick of the 2nd round on a college OF with no power?
  8. Putting Hardy in the majors to start that season after Hall had a great spring training might have been the worst personel decision Melvin has made with the Brewers. If Cain earns the CF job to start next season, they'll give it to him. An alternative would be Hart in CF with Braun in RF and Gillespie in LF, or even Gamel in LF. Its hard to tell what the organizations thoughts are of Hart in CF. Macha talked about using Hart their at the start of ST, then never followed through with it.
  9. Hart is our only guy that spent a full season in AAA, the rest only spent months there. If Cain plays well, he'll be our CF to open 2010. The talent level in AA and AAA is the same, its just different types of players. I think Cain is in AA because Tyner wouldn't sign here to play in AA.
  10. I love Branyan, I believe he could be a dominant player if he ever played a full season, but he's as fragile as they come. Its a shame really. Massive power wasted.
  11. I'm elated Macha has finally decided to use my lineup, though I was suprised he tried it this late in camp. His reasonimg for trying it now is that he is finally sure that Hardy offers enough protection for Fielder. That sure worked well down the stretch last year. I love Macha. He just has a winners mentality. He has "it".
  12. I doubt Gwynn's poor defense helped his cause last night. Cameron and Duffy catches both of those balls. However, Duffy has really cooled off at the plate since he started facing real pitching. How about we keep niether?
  13. The Cubs made a deal days later. I thought the Cubs would have made that deal either way, as they got something for nothing. Good thing Gaudin fell apart, or it would have been a rediculous steal.
  14. I agree. And making a deadline deal 3 weeks early wasn't bold on our parts, that was bold by Cleveland. The Cubs made a deal days later. It happens. That said, i'm happy Melvin won't ship off Hardy early, as his win values would be impossible to replace. I think its about proven production, not names. Pitching is so unpredictable, so its smart to aquire the few who are predictable. I don't like how our prospects this past season are minimized because Huntesville suddenly played neutral. The parks didn't change, there was just some great hitters in the league, and most of them played at Huntesville. We had no pitching there. The park is still a pitchers park. They didn't move the wall or change the batters eye or install a dome to deaden the air. It played the way it played because of the players who played in it.
  15. True, but what team is good at keeping pitching prospects healthy and and always has its pitchers make %100 recoveries from surgury? The Brewers actually do MRI their high draft pick pitchers, at least they did with Rogers. I agree with doing it more often, but Melvin has to work within a budget. Its hard to say whats more cost effective without having all the numbers in front of us. Melvin did overhaul the entire organizations training staff a few years ago, and we saw positive results at first. The last year has been questionable again.
  16. Wow, thats really unfair. The guy was going through a dead arm period. He pitched well in Helena. He's a fireballer pitching without his velocity. That was a pretty genius move. They dealt 2 overvalued guys, got a rental and draft picks. The draft picks are already rated higher than Inman and Garrison are per BA. Manny Parra is really good, and shouldn't be forgotten. The Brewers were 2nd in the NL in pitching last year, and that staff put them in the playoffs. I'd say they did a whole lot right. I think you've forgot your opinions on Lucroy and Brewer just to name 2 off the top of my head. I appreciate your 1st hand insight, you understand prospects well, but bagging on one of the best ran organizations in baseball seems a little off to me.
  17. I could say the Brewers are penny pinchers and only spend money on the one expense that is made available to the public, the major league payroll. However, every time I suggest this, I get yelled at. So I'm not saying it.
  18. This discussion continues to be premature. And how do we continue to discuss our SS of the future without including Brent Brewer? While Escobar hasn't hit a lick all spring, Brewers numbers combined in major and minor league games include a 393 batting average and a 714 slugging %. We have 2 SS's of the future, and a great 1 right now. Lets not make decisions before they're necessary.
  19. Where have you seen this announced? Cain has been playing with Nashville in spring games, and tearing it up. Cain played 1 1/2 years at a+, and played a 1/2 season at AA. He mashed in the AFL. He's ready for AAA, and will be there in my opinion. He'll outhit hit Escobar too.
